[opensuse] OpenSuse 11.0 and KDE 4 Unstable

Hi all, I'm in a bit of a quandry with my KDE 4 installation. I am currently running Opensuse 11.0 and have been upgrading my KDE 4 and QT from the following repositories for quite some time: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/UNSTABLE:/Desktop/open… http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Qt/openSUSE_11.0/ This all worked very well until about 2 weeks ago and I was using a very stable 4,2 and then an initial unstable 4.3 devel which quite often black screened. However since that initial 4.3 I have been unable to update When I update the KDE4 I have to upgrade the QT to version 4.4.90+4.5.0. However, with this version of QT installed I cannot run Yast software management as it Seg faults on drawing its window. Reverting to the QT44 repository allows Yast to work again. I have tried the Yast Backport repository as well but that is no better I seem to be at a bit of an impasse; I can do one of the following it seems: 1. Not upgrade KDE4 any more 2. Upgrade and not use yast-QT (Yast-GTK isnt as good) 3. Upgrade to opensuse 11.1 (assuming this wont have the same problem) - dont want this as I have all the software set up exactly as I want it and I dont really have the time to sort them all out again. 4. Find a solution to my repository fiasco. Has anyone else had this problem and know how to solve it - I would really like to continue testing and using kde4 as I have found since 4.2 that it is fast becoming a really good desktop and had started using it for most things. The current version that I have installed seems to have a couple of annoying problems and hence why I want to resolve the issue: 1. Kopete yahoo seems to send blank messages but emoticons get sent. Havent been able to debug it as my yahoo contact isnt technically minded but im beginning to wonder if it is setting the font to white 2. As mentioned earlier I quite often end up with a black screen - the mouse cursor is still there and the desktop still functions it is just all black. Seems to happen when I move a window and wobbly windows is on or sometimes when I click on the suse style menu. If the effects are off it doesnt seem to happen. [opensuse] Skype with PA on 11.1

Hi, Skype was almost usable on 11.0 with pulseaudio when following http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup#Skype but I fail completely getting voice capturing to work on 11.1. Skype always aborts the testcall immediately with the error about capturing. So it's not only a volume setting issue. Anyone got it to work and could iterate the steps to be done? [opensuse] Curious about different software raid signatures in top (md & dm raid)

Listmates, I am curious. I have several boxes that have regular software raid (mdraid) and several boxes that make use of bios raid (dmraid). Looking at top on the boxes with mdraid I notice that once every second or so the disks in the array are 'talking?' to each other which produces and nice rhythmic signature in top like: 1931 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.7 0.0 4:59.63 md2_raid1 1090 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 2:44.20 md1_raid1 Noticing this I checked the bios raid boxes to see if they had a similar indication in top. They don't. I know both md and dm raid are different software raid implementations for all practical purposes, but I was curious why md raid would show up in tom and dmraid doesn't. Does anybody have a one or two line synopsis they could share? Next, when I see the mdraid make its fleeting appearance in top, what is actually going on with the array? Guessing, it would appear that as part of the normal operation, the disks in the array (md1_raid1 & md2_raid1, here) are checking sync status and seeing if anything new has appeared that needs to be duplicated from one disk to the other. Is that all that is going on or its it something else? It's a good thing I'm not a cat, it would have killed me a long time ago;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I have several Vista machines on our network and today none of them are able to get a DHCP address. What a mess. [opensuse] Xorg Server Saturates CPU (Kernel Mode) When DPMS Engages

Hi, In the aftermath of my ill-considered attempt to install the Gnome Control Center (*), subsequently removed, I find that when I come back to my system after a long idle period, GKrellM is showing me a solid block of 100% CPU, most of it kernel-mode. This abnormal usage ceases with the disengagement of the DPMS / screen saver. In order to track down the cause of this symptom that vanishes when I use keyboard or mouse (**), I ran a loop of periodic "ps axl" invocations directed into a file before retiring in the evening. From this I deduced that the X server is the culprit. At least it is the process accumulating the CPU usage, but since it's a server, this may just reflect it responding to a barrage of requests from some other process. Furthermore, it is not the case that this extreme CPU use is caused by the screen saver itself, because I can wait for it to kick in, let it run for several minutes (but less than the DPMS initiation interval) and then cancel it (the screen saver) and see from the 5-minute interval displayed by GKrellM that CPU usage is normal (for the screen saver I'm currently using, that's just a few percent). In fact, the abnormal usage does not start until about 10 minutes after the system becomes idle. Additionally, there appears to be a short interval (about 5 minutes) when the CPU usage drops back to normal, and then it goes up and stays up. This is openSUSE 11.1. If anyone can shed some light on this, give me some hints about what might be wrong, what to look at, what experiments to conduct, etc., I'd appreciate it. (*) The other possibility was installing the KDE 4 Personal Settings packages, which unlike the subsequently removed Gnome Control Center, remains installed. However, I don't believe the symptom began until I added and then removed the Gnome packages. (**) I know I could SSH in from another system to monitor it without disengaging DPMS or the screen saver. I may yet try that. [opensuse] Wireless Problem

Hi, I have installed 11.1 32bit OS using kde3.5 on my Hp Pavilion dv2000 laptop. I had a successful installation but I am having a problem getting the wireless to work. The wireless card information is as follows: Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company BCM4311 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Contro ller I installed ndiswrapper, ndisgtk, and ndiswrapper pae kernel module with yast. Using ndisgtk, I installed the same .inf windows driver that I used previously with success in 10.2 and 10.3. when I do the following I get this normal result: #ndiswrapper -l bcmwl5 : driver installed device (14E4:4311) present (alternate driver: ssb) When I try to configure the wireless card in yast, I tried to use the ifup method. The light on the wireless switch is blue. When I use the scan network button on the Yast/Wireless Network Card Configuration/Wireless Device Settings Page to find networks, it shows the four networks that I can pick up here at my house that I and my neighbors have, so I know that the wireless radio is working. Yet after I finish using the wizard to configure the card I can't connect to the internet using wireless. If I select "User Controlled with Networkmanager" instead of "Traditional Method with ifup" and then activate knetworkmanager I still can't connect. The knetworkmanager icon in the kickerpanel is grayed out, and if I right click on the icon it says "Networkmanager is not running". Would someone kindly help me out and advise me what I need to do to get this working? [opensuse] Microphone Probelm

Hi, I have got a problem with my microphones. They worked with Suse10.3. I shifted all Switches in Alsamixer to the maximum and deinstalled pulseaudio. The hardware works, there was an acoustic feedback. But Skype, KRecord and Audacity did not get any input. What should I do? Regards, Michael Bartoschek
