Hi all, I think I know that "transcode" does this, but last time I asked a question on that list the reply was effectively "if you have to ask, you shouldn't be using transcode", so I thought I'd try here. I'd like to recode some digital video from the full resolution of my camera down to something less. Basically I have DVD stuff I burned ages ago using something under windows (Nero, I think?) and it's 640x480, or some such. But anyway, it's big, and high res. I'd like to be able to shrink it down to something smaller, mainly in terms of space, but I'd be happy enough to lose resolution too, say to 320x240? It would be useful if I could turn it back into a more "ordinary" format, like mpg, maybe. Any suggestions? And if I have to use "transcode" is there a comprehensible manual for the trivial user? [opensuse] SuSE 10.3 and running installed WinXP virtual

I'm trying to avoid booting into Windows XP for several reasons, but need to run TurboTax and Internet Explorer. TurboTax will not run in Wine/Crossover Office. So far I've tried VMware Server 2, doesn't support setup of raw disks (i.e. actual partitions, not virtual disks, a file on the host filesystem), though may be able to run legacy setups. And VMware Server 1.0.8 sets up okay but won't boot. Somewhere I ran across a note that it cannot boot from SCSI raw disks, only IDE ones. And since some kernel update, even ATA disks appear to be SCSI disks (the /dev/hdX => /dev/sdX change). Booting the virtual machine shows the BIOS screen, then GRUB, then nothing: no activity, no prompt, no echoing the keyboard. Why a Windows partition should display part of the GRUB console is beyond me. Has anyone successed in running a Windows XP Pro partition in some kind of virtual machine, VMware or other? This is an older Intel CPU without virtualization hardware support. [opensuse] Handling larg email Inbox files

I'm using OpenSuse 11.0 and Evolution 2.22.1.1 I've gotten into what's probably a bad habit of letting important emails accumulate in my Evolution Inbox. The search feature is quite good, and I can usually find an important email quite easily. The problem is, even though I try to create sub directories, there seems to be a limit on the file size that evolution can handle. Last week Evolution wouldn't crashed and wouldn't re-start. I went into the .mail / inbox file and moved the 2gig+ inbox file to another directory. Evolution then started, recreated the inbox file and functions as normal. The question is, is there a known application that I can use to access the old 2gig+ email file? I've got a number of emails in there that I'd hate to lose. [opensuse] 11.1 install stage2 - kernel oops in attach_nobh_buffers() - has anyone else seen this?

I've just been installing two new office machines, and both produced this problem - a kernel oops (null ptr in attach_nobh_buffers() during stage2, even at exactly the same point (postfix config at 81%). Totally reproducable. It sounds a lot like what this patch is meant to fix: Dave Kleikamp (1): vfs: Don't call attach_nobh_buffers() with an empty list but that didn't go into the kernel until 2.6.29-rc4, which barely a week old. [opensuse] backups via rsync leaving old junk in the backup?

All, I have a directory that I backup every night via rsync to a remote server a couple thousand miles away. (For about 2 years now.) Its a dynamic directory with files created and deleted. I just noticed that the main directory is 247GB, but the remote copy is 354GB. I assume rsync can cause the extra files on the remote to be deleted? I'm currently using: rsync -avh --delete-after --stats --links --partial-dir=<transfer_dir> --timeout=1800 <BACKUP_DIR> <remote_user>@<remote_server>/<remote_dir> Any idea what I need to change? FYI: My local dir is actually the destination of a rdiff-backup run, so it has tons of old revisions in it. [opensuse] Two workspaces, one monitor.

All, I'm one of those avid and outspoken dual-monitor users. What makes it so useful for me, isn't the second monitor per se, but the extra workspace. But sometimes I need to (begrudgingly) use a single monitor computer. So the question is, can I replicate this functionality using one (wide screen) monitor, and preferably not having to lose my gnome/kde DE. So: I essentially want to be able to split my wide screen monitor in two. So I can quickly maximize two applications side by side. For bonus points, I'd like to be able to watch movies (or even play games, not that I do that) with it spanning across both "work spaces" (my whole monitor). Insights? Thoughts? [opensuse] Wireless connections are not started

Hi, I've installed Opensuse 11.1 on a Dell Latitude E5400 Notebook. There are several problems: 1. Opensuse could not resize the Vista partition. I used kubuntu for that. 2. Opensuse broke the MBR. I had to use the backup to restore it. 3. The main problem is that wireless connections are not started: After the first reboot after installation everything worked fine. I clicked on my ESSID, entered the password and went online after some seconds. After the next reboot it did not work. Clicking on the ESSID in knetworkmanager had no effect. There was no spinning gear as normally. Just the gray globe. Some people on irc mentioned that some upgrades could cause that. Therefore I downgraded everything back to the shipped version. After that the connection worked again. But now I have restarted the machine again and again no connection is established. The strange thing is, that switching to the traditional ifup network mode allows me to go online by the wireless card. The problem only shows with NetworkManager. Unfortunately I switch networks very often and have to use the NetworkManager. Has anyone similar problems and suggestions to resolve the problem? [opensuse] OpenOffice/Konqueror problem under OpenSuSE 11.1

Hello listmates, We use OpenOffice presentations which sometimes invoke external resources. Under OpenSuSE 10.3/KDE 3 the multimedia files would simply get open in whatever application is specified in the Konqueror as default, and executables such as scripts would simply be executed. Now under OpenSuSE 11.1/KDE4/OpenOffice 3 what I get is that the multimedia files (at least .mov) get open in Konqueror (as opposed to Mplayer specified as default) and scirpts would get open in atext editor as opposed to being directly invoked as executables. Has anyone encountered this problem? Has anyone resolved it? Thanks. [opensuse] YaST Repair

YaST does not show the same packages that zypper (through konsole, after su -) does. This was particularly after I updated to KDE 4.2; also have KDE 3.5 installed. Doing the foll, after su to root from init 3 # rpmdb --rebuilddb # zypper refresh -b # zypper up gives a totally different set of packages (which are correct, going by the version numbers), than what YaST shows. Search showed me the yast2 Repair Tool at http://packages.opensuse-community.org/packageinfo.jsp?checksum=b508b5f52d3… . Any idea what this does; how I can repair YaST GUI to accurately show updates and packages ? [opensuse] Beagle never quits!

Just like any good hound dog, on my system beagled never stops! After the system has been idle for a few minutes beagled will start up and start burning CPU. At first I thought this was expected behavior. Then I noticed that it isn't actually doing anything and it never stops! I can tell it isn't indexing anything because the hard drive is not running and no matter how long I leave the system beagled keeps burning CPU. On my laptop this causes the fans to run on max and is just generally kind of annoying. [opensuse] kernel panic - openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64) on Intel Atom 230 mobo (D945GCLF)

I get a kernel panic during the install of the x86_64 version on an Intel D945GCLF (Atom 230). I have tried the "safe mode" and "no apic" options but no success. From what I have read on the 'Net, Atom 230 is a 64 bit cpu; I guess it should be able to run the 64bit version. [opensuse] One-click or not?

Hello SuSE people, Just reinstalled 11.1 (my testing distro) with KDE 4.1. I say reistalled because I did the one-click in 11.1 to have a look at KDE 4.2. There were all kinds of dependencies,and the one click installed the 11.2 alpha kernel. (Used the wrong repo?) whatever ! Reinstalled and KDE 4.1 is really lacking. Now, I do want to try KDE 4.2 but I have seen a couple of threads aarguing the merits of the one-click and the change in QT. I also read that it is better to just load the 4.2 repositories and upgrade from them. So, what's the deal ? Has somebody really defined what is the best way to upgrade to 4.2 , and what QT should be used? Opinions ? Advice? Hello listmates, When I connect to an 11.1 machine using VNC I see a X-Display but no login prompt (just a display). On the console, the XDM runs fine. It appears a few people out there are discussing the issues related to VNC under 11.1 but I have yet to see anyone offer a solution. Is there a solution? Thanks. This morning I turned on my laptop and launched Firefox. (I'm running openSUSE 10.3/KDE.) I got the message that it was checking my add-ons to see if I had the correct versions. Figuring Firefox had updated via YOU, I checked the version. I was on 3.0.6. I just now restarted Firefox since I had closed it earlier. I got the same message, and then noticed a Mozilla web page stating I should be on the latest version for better security. I checked the version and am now on 3.0.5. [opensuse] how does bugzilla work?

Bug 445320 concerns the intel 845 (and I think many other) Intel graphics. It only allows framebuffer graphics for these chipsets. It was found in 11.1 rc1. I've sent in some extra info and voted for the bug. I'm not sure how bugzilla works but an upgrade to 11.1 would render my 20 node lan useless due to screen flicker. My main concern is when are rc bugs fixed? Is it likely to be fixed before release this week? If not what is the usual timescale? I find that YaST --> Software Management (YaST GUI) and zypper (# zypper up, after # zypper refresh) give different results for Software Package updates (particularly for the KDE 4.2 packages). This was after I did the 1-click install of KDE 4.2 (upgrade from KDE 4.1.3), from this page - http://en.opensuse.org/KDE4. This persisted even after I deleted the KDE 3.5.x and KDE 4.1.4 repos (as given on this page: http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/Repositories) Is this a bug ? [opensuse] Keyboard shortcuts? Where did they go?

Back in the day, (OpenSUSE 10.3?) there was a useful keyboard shortcuts tool which had a comprehensive set of options that could be assigned a shortcut. Specifically, you could assign your virtual desktops to "CTRL-F1", "CTRL-F2", etc for quick switching. The OpenSUSE 11.1 implementation of this tool can be found in the Control Center but it has been "dumbed down" so significantly that it no longer has any they options I need. Hi, Since recently I experience problems with my root partition falling back at random to be read-only. mount still shows it mounted as rw: /dev/mapper/SYSTEM-ROOT on / type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr) creating anything on that FS fails: touch /tmp/test touch: cannot touch `/tmp/test': Read-only file system remounting it rw fails: sudo mount -o remount,rw / mount: block device /dev/mapper/SYSTEM-ROOT is write-protected, mounting read-only Rebooting the system solves it, until a random date / time when this is going to happen again. The disk was replaced (incl. cabling). In trying to get used to gedit, I find that 'Open Location' either has some trick of which I am not aware, or it DNW properly. Have tried: <hostname> ssh://<hostname> sftp://<hostname> BUT none open the location successfully - all complain with the nice stopsign that '<hostname> is a directory'. What *IS* a location if it isn't a Directory? Have I missed something? Dear Listmates, After a traumatic experience of installing suse 11.1 on hp2133 mini-laptop (chrome graphics driver (www.openchrome.org) had to be installed from source, broadcomm STA driver had to be used: (http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Network_Adapters_(Wireless)/Broadcom_BCM43xx)) I am still suffering from the following weird problem: Some of the programs in KDE, for example KpowerSave and Amarok (or even the panel configuration) have configuration windows that are so big that they don't fit on my screen! .. It is very annoying, as the "OK" button to save changes is beyond reach. The screen is the mini-laptop screen ("wxsvga" or how it is called..?). Does anyone have a clue how to fix this?? Everyone have probably seen the benchmarks about the poor performance of Firefox on Linux compared to Windows. Apparently even Wine+Firefox beats native firefox (actually I tried it and its true). Some say it is because Win FFX is compiled with PGO ( profile-guided optimization) and without in most Linux distros. So, my question - can I request that FFX be compiled with PGO? or is there some technical reason its not done so already? [opensuse] contrib vs. Packman

I have not yet used contrib: http://en.opensuse.org/Contrib It seems to be gaining packages. (autossh is one I requested via bugzilla be added to OS 11.2 and it got put in Contrib instead.) And I've never really understood what Packman is. It obviously holds a lot more than problematic codecs, etc. Can someone explain how they will work together? I now get Youtube video, but I get no sound. Should I plug my earphones into the light green audio jack or one of the other 5 jacks? Do I need to configure anything in Suse 11 to enable audio output? Anybody had any luck with running Zattoo (online tv) on openSUSE 11.1? It just freezes on start after I accept the license agreement. [opensuse] MS Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000

I have one of the keyboards mentioned in the subject. According to everything I've read, it should work perfectly (excluding the zoom thing and maybe one or two other extra keys) with openSUSE 11. However, since I got this keyboard 7 months ago, I've had to select a different model in yast/sax because if I choose this model from the list, certain obvious keys like Page Up and Page Down no longer work. And with that or any of the other keyboard models, anything but the standard keys comes up as NoSymbol in xev. I tried digging through the xkb files, but they are so complicated I figured I'd ask for help before I continue down that route. In the time since I've had this, I've tried a number of things to fix this and I have to ask: does Xmodmap mean nothing any more? It doesn't seem to do a damn thing either in /etc/X11 or as .xmodmap in my home directory. So anyway, why would this keyboard model work in everyone's installation but mine?
