Thank you very much. I apologize for my ignorance on networks communications. I used SSH some time ago but never had to set it up. I will have a look at the system directory on my Mac. I also opened the web site for VNC. I understand for Mac nothing comes for free (I was spoilt by Linux) but the good news is that a Mac license is not so expensive. Still I am not sure what my collaborator (Elia) in Finland has to do on his part. In the case I install VNC server on my Mac, should Elia install VNC Client on his Linux system ? In the case I somehow enable SSH on my Mac, what should Elia do to connect an one od my Mac users remotely ? I emphasize that in order to properly run the Statistical Signal Processing toolkit on my Mac, Elia must be able to open a graphic window on his own Linux system (in Finland) where the results of the SSP package, running on my Mac, can be displayed. The SSP toolkit generates plenty of plots. Elia must be able to operate on the the SSP toolkit GUI, from his own Linux system, to set up the analysis parameters for his own SSP sessions. Having said that, which one of the two cross-platform connection options (SSH and VCN) can guarantee a remote graphic interface ? Optionally you may want to tunnel this over SSH, this can be done quite easily on the MAC. Remember to set a VNC password on the mac, this can be done in System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Management > Computer Settings. I have an old Dell Dimension 4100 (I think that is a P3-800 with 384M of ram (Same Rage pro 128 AGP) and 11.0 runs fine, xfce and icewm are also great desktops for older hardware. [opensuse] How to quickly get Remote Data from another box? bash? http?

Listmates, I have run into another challenge and I am trying to determine the proper and most efficient way to get remote data to display on a local machine. Part of what I want to do is to gather sensor data from remote machines for web display on a server. I can think of 2 ways to do it, but neither seems like the "right" way. For example what's best to retrieve the ls_sensor output from a box across the lan or internet? First attempt was to force remote execution of 'sensors' via ssh and redirect the output to a file on the remote machine and rsync it back. On the remote site you would have a script called 'rem_sensors': #!/bin/bash sensors > ~/tmp/savedsensors exit 0 On the local machine, you would have 'get_sensors': #!/bin/bash rsync -av lanremotehost:~/tmp/savedsensors ~/tmp/host_snsr_data rsync -ave ssh netremotehost:~/tmp/savedsensors ~/tmp/host_snsr_data # and so on The connection time is a bother, but with sshkeys, no interaction is required. Next, I though I would just write a 3 line php script to execute sensors and then suck it back to the local box over http with lynx -dump or with rsync. The script on the remote is nothing but: <?php $SENS = sensors; echo $SENS."\n"; ?> This option seemed like trying to kill a mosquito with shotgun. What are some of the other ways you employ to get this type of script output back from a remote host? I'm looking for something lightweight and fast -- aren't we all. [opensuse] Suggestions for USB external HD

I need help with buying an external HD. I bought an Iomega eGo external 160 GB USB hard drive but it is not recognized by my os 11.0 linux only box. I thought it would work like my USB flash drives. Searching the web I found nothing about drivers but on Hardware4Linux I found that all Western Digital cards work on linux. TigerDirect has a Western Digital Firewire/USB2.0 combo about the same size. Does anyone have a recommendation on this or any other external HD? [opensuse] Changing ext3 journal method?

Hi, I recently setup a couple of partitions with ext3 with a journal mode of journal ie not the default of ordered. I loaded OpenSuSE 11.0 onto it and have done a fair bit of configuring but would like to change the journaling mode to the default of ordered. Using my friend Google I found: http://en.opensuse.org/Speeding_up_Ext3 but am confused by what is under 'Enabling Writeback Mode' and which command to use as to my knowlege I do not have writeback mode but journal mode. I would assume I use the journaled command but would like to make sure. [opensuse] No sound in vmware

opensuse 11, vmware server 107, win XP 64bit. Google hasn't been my friend. I've tried setting the audio device to /dev/dsp, /dev/audio, tried launching the thing with the vmware-dsp scripts, no luck. Anyone had success with this? FWIW, I'd rather use kvm, but it refuses to actually install XP into the image file (sits in "Setup is starting Windows" forever), and virtualbox still won't do a 64bit guest. [opensuse] terminal, sudo password problem

well, i thought that some of what i remembered form v10.3 and working with the terminal would come back, but the terminal is not cooperating. i sudo user id and i get the reply: command not found. but! sometimes i will get the root password line. when i enter the root password i get the reply: command not found. if i try to sudo again i get command not found. now i think i did a real boneheaded thing; i edited the sudo in yast to say that i run as root under my user id. i can't get back to "all" like it originally was. please don't chastise me too harshly for this. i can always reinstall the os. btw, i have opensuse setup in a dual boot and the neat thing is that it comes up first. i was very proud of myself until this mess. anybody have any ideas of fixing this problem short of reinstalling opensuse? remember, i'm a newbie so you will have to hold my hand most of the way. i also have another question, but i'll reserve that for later. cheers, dwain -- "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." [opensuse] Network does not start automatically nor manually after reboot (openSUSE 10.3)

I want my network connections starting automatically after booting on my toshiba laptop. However, when configuring it with yast it only works until rebooting. Under "Device Activation" I tried "At Boot Time", "On Cable connection", and "On Hotplug" without success. Even "Manually" does not enable me to ifup eth0 (instead it says "Interface eth0 is not available"). Strangely, the "External Zone" setting in yast's Network Card Setup seems to get lost after rebooting (and is set to "No zone, All Traffic Blocked"). When I re-run yast's Network Card Configuration and only change this firewall zone setting, everything works again, and the network is set up automatically, or at least I am able to ifup eth0 manually. Any hint how to enable automatic network start? Or at least manual start (with ifup) without having to launch yast every time?
