You're looking for alien, probably. Convert your .deb package into an rpm and install it. Caveat, version numbers in dependencies may be problematic. [opensuse] opensuse updater does not work in 11.0 beta 3 kde

Hi, I am trying to use opensuse updater in 11 beta 3 kde, but it keeps going in circles. Every time I run the app and authenticate as root it seems to reset itself. [opensuse] Mplayer & TV Capture

Hi, I have been trying various scripts to see if I can get mplayer to display input to a tv capture card in my computer without success. The tv capture card is a ATI tv wonder pro. I use a video player to play old videos to my computer through the tv card in WinXP, and then use Nero to convert it to Mpeg to write to DVD. I would like to learn how to get this running in Linux, but the best I have been able to achieve is snow on all the channels except the one on which the video is playing. On that channel, I have a black screen with some lines, but no picture. I have tried several scripts, here is the one most recently used with the results described above: mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:input=0:norm=ntsc:width=640:height=480:device=/dev/video0:\ freq=61.25:adevice=/dev/dsp1:forceaudio:audiorate=32000 Would someone with knowledge of the parameters be able to advise me how to modify the script so that it will work for the purposes that I have outlined? [opensuse] Disappearing Disk Space

I've been meaning to install bigger drives on my domain controller/home server, but I've been putting that off until the upcoming release of SuSE 11.0. Yesterday, however, I logged on and got a dialog telling me that disk space was running out, and I'd better do something. So I moved 30 GB of music files temporarily to my workstation, which has a buttload of room on its drive. That seemed to take care of it, and konqueror showed 30 GB free on the server. Today after work, though, I got another message telling me that it's out of space again. 0.0 KB free. Admittedly, I could have screwed something up -- work has been intense lately, and my concentration isn't what it should be, but I really don't know where that much space went so fast. I have 1.5 TB of new drives arriving tomorrow, but I'd like to get to the bottom of this mystery sooner, rather than later. I seem to recall that there's a Linux utility or command that will list the biggest files on a drive, showing what's taking up the most room. I'm about to search through my Linux books for a reminder of that, but thought someone here might remember what it is. I'm not convinced yet that there's anything evil going on (I've got the server pretty well protected, I think), but I'd sure like to know what's using so much space. If someone has an idea what I could use to take a look, I'd surely be grateful. [opensuse] suse 11.x sources

Where would I find the suse 11.0 pre-release source packages? Am looking to upgrade my "open-ssh" to 4.7 and am hoping it's already in the 11.x tree -- I have a patch for high-speed ssh, that applies to 4.7, but 10.3 only has 4.6 ... and thought it would be easier to start with 4.7 already packaged for SuSE than starting with openssh 4.6, then trying to upgrade to 4.7 sources, then applying patch...:-) Of course I'll be applying this onto suse 9.3-10.3 systems, so no worries about compatibility...:-) (*ducking*)... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] Various sax2 issues/questions (mouse and video)

At the moment I'm just running the standard X installed with Beta3, and I've noticed two odd things on my T42p. First, now that the synaptics touchpad is working, I only have two of three buttons working - if I go in and change the setting in xorg.conf, something overwrites it. What do I have to do to turn 3 button emulation off? In sax2, I can't toggle the option at all. Second, this laptop has a tv out connection on it. I do get a signal, but it's not the right signal. In 10.3 with the fglrx driver, the tv out works fine. I use aticonfig to change the output on the laptop with 10.3 on it. The atitvout program doesn't seem to work well with the configuration on the laptop with 11.0 on it (complains that the VBE call failed). The driver indicated in the xorg.conf file is the radeon driver, card identified as a FireGL Mobility T2. "atitvout vbe" reports VBE 2.0 and the OEM ID is "ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600". Ideas? [opensuse] System error code 11.0 Beta3

I am trying to install opensuse 11 beta3 on an older PC, dell dimension 4400 with a 40gig drive and 128meg ram. This has happened a few times but when it goes to delete the existing partitions and make the new ones i specified, i always get "failure occurred during following action" deleting partition /dev/sda1 system error code was: -3002 And the install fails never to go any further. Maybe it has something to do with the swap partiton that you are now asked about during the initial configure? I tried to create a file but it does not create the file, i must select the swap partition to make it as far in the install as i have. [opensuse] how does udev and automatically mounting a device in SuSE 10.3 work.

Hi all; I have been trying to figure out how SuSE10.3 mounts an external device such as a thumb drive or an external hard drive. I have read the man pages on udev, sysfs, hotplug, hw(up|down|status), autofs, etc ... and I am missing something. My understanding is: The device is plugged in. The kernel connects to the device and queries the device for identifying information. udev listen for the signal (from either hotplug or the kernel), and it starts. Udev reads the identifying information from the /sys directory (placed there by the kernel), then udev creates a device node in the /dev directory (or where it is told to, e.g. /dev/sdb) based on it's rules. The rules are found in /etc/udev/rules.d. The part I am missing is what process creates a mount point for the device and actually mounts the device. Essentially, I understand how we get to the device node. But, I am missing the process that automates the command: mount -t ext2 /dev/sdb2 /media/thumbdrive2 I thought it was in the udev rules. Using the "mount+=" statement. But, I can't find that type of a statement for USB devices. Or maybe I missed it. Is the "symlink+=" command doing the work? Or is there something else?
