[opensuse] Compiz, start it from where?

[opensuse] Sata Harddisk under AHCI controll mode gives warnings on boot witch end up with errors(the harddisk works, but is slow)

Hallo, I get the following warnings in /var/log/warn . And also these annoying outputs on boot .( It's not my boot drive) The disk it refers to is an external eSATA western digital 500GB vfat, witch doesn't support S.M.A.R.T error logging and long self tests of course , it is able only to give a short output about its condition to smartctl. Also if I try to disable the Read cache on this hard disk with hdparm, it disables it, but when I reboot its enabled again. What can I do? And is this thing dangerous for my data I stored on this hard drive (I get the same things even if I connect it to the other controller, ICH8 for ex. ). And one more thing I can't change the queue_depth in quefile:///sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth with the command :: $ echo 31 > /sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth as libata suggests in their FAQ, the only value it accepts is 1 and not 31(maybe its because the system detects this disk as an external due to the htoplugging functionality of AHCI controllers. Although it doesn't say anywhere safely remove in my computer on KDE, as it says for other external usb HDD. If you can't help please tell me if you know, where I can forward this mail to get some extra help. thanks in advance for your time. [opensuse] TTF Fonts for Google Earth, howto install?

Hi list, - when one starts google earth, it complains (but otherwise runs just fine) that a certain bitstrema vera font is missing. It provides a link from where one may download the fonts. Done so, unpacked into a directory now containing af pile of fonts. Now, where does one learn how-to install those darned fonts? Nowhere, just nowhere, can I find "install fonts" or something similar on my SuSE10.3 system? Where can I read about how-to get these fonts recognized? Not to show my ignorance, but after reading the info about this exploit, just how would my system come under attack by it? Is it embedded in some malicious java code on a website or contained in an email message that I don't read anyway? Just how would an attacker use this kernel exploit on my system? Also, from the opensuse-security announcement: "Please note that these update channels contain "beta" quality updates, so are not recommended for production use systems. Only use the kernel." WTF does that mean? If I have a production machine, don't apply the fix? Guys! We use backupexec linux agent (RALUS) to backup our linux servers to a backup exec server. Some linux clients start when the server is started but we have 1 that refuses to start when the server starts. When i go into runlevel, it is marked to not start at boot; so, i click the service and then enable and get a "returned error 1" error. Isn't there a command line tool to run that sets services to start at boot? I seem to remember something like checkconfig or something check.. [opensuse] OpenSuSE "Central" management system

Hey all, I'm looking to find a system which will allow me to administer multiple installs of OpenSuSE at once. As in, I would like to be able to administer packages, firewall configuration, etc, across all of the machines. I have around 20 PCs setup at the moment in a learning environment which although isn't very many, if this test goes well, I will have many more machines to administer in different areas. Previously, I have been writing shell scripts to do what I need and then going to each PC and downloading/running them, but this can be very time consuming. Any suggestions would be great, as I haven't yet been able to find a "package" which does what I require in these regards. I would like to be able to send and receive faxes using my openSUSE v10.3 system. A bit of looking around showed that there are not many applications to do this -- actually only one, HylaFax, which I thought likely to be more capable than the combination of sendfax+mgetty, I have downloaded and installed HylaFax. Surprisingly, HylaFax does not sport a GUI, as far as I have been able to discover. I find it difficult to believe that many people, having acquired a sophisticated operating system like SuSE, will be content with command-line operation, so I have to wonder if I have overlooked another available application. What do people do for fax service in SuSE? Or do only few people use this OS for faxing? I have stumbled upon a Java app that is intended to be a GUI for HylaFax. This is SUSEFax, which seems to be the product of someone at SuSE in Germany. It was first released in 1997 (sic), but is also available in a later beta (v1.0beta3) dated 1999, even for x86_64 at RPM.PBONE.NET. It is labeled src.rpm for SuSE v9. Before I get into compiling it (something I have not done so far), I would like to ask some questions about it. The 1997 webpage says that the docs are in German only. A later user wrote on a forum that the 1999 release has English docs, but all the labels in the GUI are in German (a decade after first release, and still in beta). Does anyone have later information? Has the developer recovered a desire to finish what he started? The program shouts "Half-Done Abandonware" Fax apps on other OSes make the sending operation a matter of "printing" from the application that created the document to the fax app; does SUSEfax do that? This is not mentioned in any of the webpages I have found. It is said only that one can send faxes from the phone book. So at minimum, there are at least two stages in sending a fax. The HylaFax webpage speaks of the need for Ghostscript. What is this for? Of course, the name __libc_start_main let me suggest that this call should be contained in /lib/libc.so.6. But what puzzles me is the difference of the IP before __libc_start_main and after /lib/libc.so.6. On openSUSE 10.3 there is no man page for ldd so that I assume that (0xb7e0a000) in the ldd output is the address where /lib/libc.so.6 is loaded. So I still don't know if /lib/libc.so.6 is the faulting library. Some explanations or a detailed resource are very welcome. Although the main point here is the usage of ltrace, hints to the procinfo crash are welcome too. Obviously, there are some lingering bad feelings about the Microsoft agreement [Brockmeier is referring to SUSE community backlash against the agreement made on November 2, 2006 by Microsoft and Novell to improve interoperability between Microsoft Windows and SUSE Linux Enterprise]. I'm concerned that it's going to be an obstacle when working with some members of the open source community. Novell definitely could have better explained the deal and addressed concerns. I know I was skeptical about it initially as well. I mean, Microsoft hasn't been full of warm fuzzies for the community, right? However, Novell needed this deal to help drive adoption of Linux with customers worried about Linux's perceived legal risks. We live in a heterogeneous world, and both sides are going to have to find a way to work together to satisfy the users' needs. Novell and the openSUSE community have made, and continue to make, valuable contributions to the open source community. There are a lot of strong community contributors, like Miguel de Icaza, Greg Kroah-Hartman, Nat Friedman, on our team. I think it'd be a shame for people to focus exclusively on the Microsoft deal and ignore what we have and how we can improve Linux and open source, and how we can drive Linux adoption. Each Linux distro has a different community feel. What makes SuSE's unique? For good or ill? If I had to sum up the "community feel" of SUSE and openSUSE, I'd say it's "professional"—we're dedicated to putting together the best Linux distro possible for people to use to get their stuff done, whether their "stuff" is using a desktop system or running a server. I think that's a good thing, by the way. Technology-wise...what are the biggest issues the computing industry has to cope with in operating systems (generally) and Linux (in particular)? Different shops have different problems, but I think one of the biggest problems across the board is management—how to manage multiple systems effectively. That's an issue no matter what OS you're dealing with. How do you think SuSE is perceived in the business community compared to other distributions...both in technology and in business terms? I think SUSE is perceived as an excellent OS—very solid, very reliable, with great support. What do you think makes developers and techies (such as network admins) choose one distribution over another? I think a number of factors figure in to that choice—the management tools that ship with, or are available for, the distribution; how long the distro will be supported for security patches and new hardware drivers (service packs); the cost of vendor support; the distribution that the admin is already familiar with; and most importantly, whether the target applications run on the distribution or not.
