[opensuse] I have to reinstall SuSE

I just wanted to disable the on-line updates and reinstall Wine from the DVD but Yast won't do as it keeps finding another process accessing the repositories. Maybe because I had to abruptly reboot by hardware reset button as Yast won't leave the loop of trying to download from the faulty repository. I will get a new computer and install Windows on this laptop in place of SuSE. I regret saying that but this situation is unbearable . I think the only way to get out of this impasse is to reinstall SuSE without overlapping the /home partition. ... I have back-ups but reinstalling every application again implies too long. Please, instruct me how to do that. Hello, My name is Jan Fredrik Stoveland, and I am a masters student at the University of Oslo writing a thesis on firm-sponsored open source communities. openSUSE is the main case for the study. I have been granted permission to send you this email by the openSUSE management, and I hope you do not mind receiving it. I would like to ask all active members of this mailinglist to participate in a brief, anonymous electronic survey targeted at active contributors in the openSUSE community. So if you regularly post messages on this list to help other users, I would appreciate if you participate in the survey. Other users may participate too. The research is funded by the University, and is independent of any commercial interests. [opensuse] Grub will not boot my 10.2

My grub produced by Opensuse 10.3 shows five choices. Windows XP, Drdos, Suse 10.2 and Suse 10.3 and its Failsafe choice. When I choose Suse 10.2 I should get the original menulist from 10.2 with similar choices. Up to an update (cannot remember when that was) everything worked as expected. Now if I choose Opensuse10.2 I end up without this 10.2 menu and what makes it worse, on Drdos. I have checked the menulist from 10.3 which looks okay. For 10.2 it shows: (root (hd0,6)) configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst The last sentence is repeated 6 times (?) but reducing it to one time does not improve the booting. I have checked the 10.2 partition and the menulist is there with the usual input. How can I get my 10.2 back? Whether a faulty partition information has anything to do with this problem, I do not know. All my partitions except swap are mentioned as Linux native (0x83 Linux) and Yast partitioner is not able or willing to change these partitions into FAT32 and NTFS. [opensuse] 11.0a2 NTP Question

I apologize for the 11.0 questions here, but I'm not sure if they're something that should be reported elsewhere.... Going into YaST (you changed the icon!!) > Network Services > NTP Configuration the first time I got some error message. Unfortuantely, I didn't take note of it. I was able to set NTP to be loaded at boot and tested the random server successfully. However, my clock hasn't changed. I went and launched ntp from the cli and then got a subsequent message. [opensuse] Cleaning /tmp without restarting servers

Hi all, I need to clean the /tmp & /var/tmp and any other tmp directories without having to clean at restart servers (running 24x7). All hints I found are for startup/shutdown time (like http://lists.opensuse.org/archive/opensuse/2007-01/msg01353.html) rm -rf /tmp/* seems a little dangerous for a running system. I saw some perl scripts, but not being a programmer, I am not sure they are dangerous too (like http://lg.wwc.edu/issue20/followup.html and http://lg.wwc.edu/issue20/cleantmp2.0) I also added the 7 day old option to cron (http://lists4.suse.de/opensuse/2007-05/msg02714.html) but nothing seems to be happening.
