Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? [opensuse] OpenOffice Impress sound

Impress does not play sound on Linux. However, it does with Openoffice on XP. I have had an exchange with the developer and now understand what is causing the delay on Linux. He offers this as a work around while they are sorting out the real solution. http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=50506&view=next However, it would be nice to substitute on SUSE 10.2 fmj which is available for SUSE 10.2 either from Packman or SUSE, I don't remember. However, I have not got that to work. In addition I have not been able to translate his instructions for jmf to a working solution as yet. If anyone knows how to get this working on SUSE and would willing to write up something clear for the rest of that would really be neat. [opensuse] Postfix does not seem to be logging

Running SuSE 10.0 on my server, I'm trying to see why my mobile phone isn't allowed to relay through it. However, having tried to clean my log files to make finding the test section easier, I seem to have stopped the logging process. Two tries at postfix reload have not resolved the issue and after about an hour, mail, mail.err, mail.warn and mail.info all remain empty. Any suggestions, please? Hi all, I'm trying to show a demo on how to modify PAM so that /etc/nologin is bypass by ssh. I have modified /etc/pam.d/sshd: #%PAM-1.0 auth include common-auth #auth required pam_nologin.so account include common-account password include common-password session include common-session When I try to ssh into the PC, I get logged in, but immediately got kicked out. In /var/log/messages I see this: sshd : User fajar is not allowed because /etc/nologin exists I have 'grep -r nologin /etc And have commented some of the entries in apparmor too, but still cannot login. I once succeeded in bypassing /etc/nologin, but I forget how. Hi, I have the OpenSuse 10.2 DVD from Linux Format magazine. I was going to install it in a dual-boot arrangement with XP. However, based on what I have read, during the installation, it asks you to choose your desktop (KDE, GNOME, XFCE, or whatever). While I don't have any distribution installed at present, previous installations allowed you to choose the desktop you wanted to use when you booted. Is there a way to install all available desktops/windows managers and then choose the one you want to use when you boot? Many thanks in advance. [opensuse] Smart kernel replacement

Hello Been using smart for quite awhile now. Works great except for one thing. When there is a kernel update smart replaces it. Don't want that. I want the multiple kernels. I've brought up this and another issue on the labix list in the past and never get any answers. I set a flag for "lock" on the kernel and I also set a flag for "multi-version" on the kernel. Seems that smart is ignoring that and only the new kernel is found in /boot. Am I not doing this correctly? I have four different kernels in /usr/src if that means anything, including the previous and newly updated one. By saying the vanilla kernel route, I meant downloading 2.6.18.8 from kernel.org and doing the patches against it, and then running that kernel. I just downloaded it and the patches worked fine against that base. The problem is that I am not sure what I lose by loading that kernel over the patched version that opensuse distributes. Especially since I like to use EVMS, and I know that seems to work out of the box with the patched opensuse kernel. Device mapper support is in 2.6.18.8, but again I am not sure what else went into the opensuse version. Is there a list of all patches that opensuse applied to the generic 2.6.18.8 kernel? Also, I contacted Tejun, and his existing patches are on a path to be incorporated into 2.6.23, but he is about to release PMP support for AHCI SATA controllers, which should be very popular too. I'll try and track down the forward port of the patchset, but I may try just running with the patched vanilla 2.6.18.8 first. I haven't used bugzilla before, but I'll work on getting a request added. PMP support is just SO useful, and windows drivers now pretty much support it across the board on a bunch of different controllers. Linux really needs it since software raid works so well. The PMP patches never made it into vanilla (yet). If you search the lkml-ide mailing list I think you will find some people that have forward ported the PMP patchset, but you are definitely heading into unsupported territory. FYI: I think Tejun Heo is a Novell employee, so you may have better luck asking for the patchset to be incorporated into the 10.3 kernel. Is Networkmanager (this thing instead of ifup) suse specific? knetworkmanager is just a frontend, right? The problem is that (at least using knetworkmanager) you can't choose between infratructure only and adhoc connections. The point is the hotspot I'm using (it's inside a library with many students) is hiding its SSID. And windows make it to easy to start an adhoc network. So there are a lot of computers saying that they would be the hotspot but they are just a adhoc network. Networkmanager always tries to connect to the adhocs which fails of course. What to do to enforce connecting to the infrastructure?? Some years ago I used my home gardening program, Key Home Gardener, which was a 16 bit Windows program, to lay out my lot, my septic system, and my landscaping. It produces files in a .drw format, which is a Microsoft vector format. [opensuse] Printing photos easily.

Hi, I'm new to linux and this evening attempted to print some of my photos... First I tried the newest Picasa under my openSUSE 10.0, but it resulted _draft_ quality _B/W_ prints, even that 1200 DPI has been setup generally for our HP DeskJet 5940. Picasa's template is generally OK, because could place easily e.g. four of my photos on a single A4 page, but the draft quality I couldn't overcome. Of course I tried the options (theoretically) resulting better quality printouts and also checked the printer's default settings, which was normal quality/color. Therefore have no idea, how to work around this, because Picasa has quite limited print setup options under Linux and search at Google didn't help at all. At the end we managed to print the above four images via an OpenOffice.org template my boyfriend prepared few months ago and like that we succeeded. With Gimp I had bad experience in the past, so this way was not tried now. Would you give me please any hints/ideas on your preference when printing photos; I would be quite interested to hear some possibili- ties. You will have to download the > source code and recompile for your current kernel. Oh right! So I searched the site more and I remember how I got the original rpm in the first place. In the same site are src.rpms: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/drivers:/webcam/SUSE_Linux_10.1/s… So I downloaded the src rpm and rebuilt it with rpmbuild --rebuild uvcvideo.....src.rpm and I now have the latest driver in rpm format. The new driver works a bit better than previous, but I still do not have color or enough brightness. But it's progress. Thanks for your reply. Does anyone know if SUSE plans to release a version of OpenOffice with GStreamer? Here is some history from an OpenOffice list discussion. The second url is a search for MS appliances. None looked like Win 3.1, but maybe one could work. Maybe somebody could make a 3.1 appliance for him?
