Hi, I have the OpenSuse 10.2 DVD from Linux Format magazine. I was going to install it in a dual-boot arrangement with XP. However, based on what I have read, during the installation, it asks you to choose your desktop (KDE, GNOME, XFCE, or whatever). While I don't have any distribution installed at present, previous installations allowed you to choose the desktop you wanted to use when you booted. Is there a way to install all available desktops/windows managers and then choose the one you want to use when you boot? Many thanks in advance. By saying the vanilla kernel route, I meant downloading 2.6.18.8 from kernel.org and doing the patches against it, and then running that kernel. I just downloaded it and the patches worked fine against that base. The problem is that I am not sure what I lose by loading that kernel over the patched version that opensuse distributes. Especially since I like to use EVMS, and I know that seems to work out of the box with the patched opensuse kernel. Device mapper support is in 2.6.18.8, but again I am not sure what else went into the opensuse version. Is there a list of all patches that opensuse applied to the generic 2.6.18.8 kernel? Also, I contacted Tejun, and his existing patches are on a path to be incorporated into 2.6.23, but he is about to release PMP support for AHCI SATA controllers, which should be very popular too. I'll try and track down the forward port of the patchset, but I may try just running with the patched vanilla 2.6.18.8 first. I haven't used bugzilla before, but I'll work on getting a request added. PMP support is just SO useful, and windows drivers now pretty much support it across the board on a bunch of different controllers. Linux really needs it since software raid works so well. The PMP patches never made it into vanilla (yet). If you search the lkml-ide mailing list I think you will find some people that have forward ported the PMP patchset, but you are definitely heading into unsupported territory. FYI: I think Tejun Heo is a Novell employee, so you may have better luck asking for the patchset to be incorporated into the 10.3 kernel. [opensuse] Small database program?

Is there something small and simple? All I want is to set up a simple home database. Items,serial numbers maybe a couple more fields. Every time I go looking all I seem to find is stuff geared at running a Fortune 500 company. [opensuse] Filesystem becomes read-only

I am using Suse 10.2 on two different machines. One is a new Dell Poweredge 2970, the other is an older (2002) "no-name" server. Both have experienced a strange and severe problem since I installed Suse. Basically the file system is put into a read-only state. While the OS and all apps are still running and I can log in a view files/logs etc. nothing can write to the disks. Obviously this causes all kinds of problems. The only way to get the filesystem into a more interactive state is a hard reboot. The first two times this occurred, there were messages in the /var/log/messages file relating to megasas, however as soon as the system was restarted, these warnings disappeared. I believe the file was not actually written to the disk when the system freaked out so once logging resumed those entries were lost. A search of this list did not find any reference to megasas and all too many unrelated results for a read-only filesystem :). System Specs: Dell PowerEdge 2970 Opteron 2.0GHz 64-bit 4 GB memory 3x 73GB Hard Drive (RAID 5) PERC 5i "No-name server" Dual P3 1GHz 1GB memory Dual 36GB hard drives (no RAID) I appreciate any help. Anyone actually seen this work with 10.2? It never seems to attempt to join the 224.0.0.251 multicast group. Hi All, Am having weirdness with Firefox Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20061023 SUSE/2.0.0.4-1.1 Firefox/2.0.0.4. Seems that I am getting what appears to be raw html script where the headlines should be in a local on-line newspaper. I have included a screenshot to demonstrate what I am experiencing. This is something that just appeared as I don't recall having done anything to precipitate this. Any help in how to fix this would be great. Thank you, Phil

[opensuse] Network install frustration

I have spent the last 8 hours trying to install on a PC with a CD and no floppy..... I have an Opensuse 10.2 DVD, and a PC running it on the network, but for the life of me, haven;t been able to connect via FTP, HTTP, SMB, NFS and various other options. I can run up the PC using a Bart disk, create a partition and copy files to that.... but still no luck. One of my main queries is: when pointing to an SMB share with the install, what is the install supposed to look like?? ie is it just the DVD (ie share the dvd drive and put the original dvd in) or is it a "special" mix of files.... or a directory on the DVD??? So many questions.... But regardless of that, I am sure I have tried all those options, just to continually get a message similar to "invalid installation image...." HELP!! Then again.... I am trying to replace XP on my wifes PC, with a decent OS, but it just aint workin'!
