[opensuse] Samba not behaving (Suse 10.0)

Hello, I've setup a share with guest only access (user=nobody), however windows computers keep requesting a username and password just to view the share. How do I make samba not request login for a share that should be globally available and unrestricted? Oddly, I have a similar guest share on another Suse 10 install and it doesn't request a login. [opensuse] Chameleon and Suse Menu

I'm using openSUSE 10.2 and can't seem to get the chameleon to display on the suse menu. If I switch to kde menu it shows fine, but I don't know of any setting to make it show when using the suse menu. also the top of the suse menu doesn't display properly, sorta like the graphics show up fuzzy with streaks through it... this also doesn't happen when using the kde menu...this same streaky fuzzyness also shows up just prior to the gui loading up, so I'm not sure if the problem is related, nor do I know how to take a screenshot or if it's even possible at that point in the boot process. I can email a screenshot directly to anyone interesting in seeing what I'm talking about. [opensuse] How can my clock be this wrong?

Hi gang, I'm still with 9.3, but I did the clock-fix thing when it was all coming up a couple months ago, but...on one of the forums I visit once in a while, I just noticed that the dates are showing 2074! Could someone else verify if they're seeing way off dates on that forum too please? (The link below is just one of the webpages of course. All the pages though I'm seeing the same incorrect dates) <http://www.kmuddy.com/mercuryboard/index.php?a=forum&f=77> If there's nothing wrong with the forum stuff, why is my system showing such goofy dates? [opensuse] OT: Going for the LPIC

[opensuse] Autoinstall....Grrrr.

Hi all. I'm still trying to get my auto-install CD to work. At least now it boots... But when it fails during the installation. I put: autoyast=file:\\\control.xml install=cd on the kernal parameter line and autoyast starts the installation process. Then I get a screen with a "An error occured during the installation." error message. There doesn't appear that there is any way to diagnose this and the error message is certainly useless. I've checked that my control.xml file is valid XML. The log files under /var/log didn't give any hints either. So, how does one approach this problem? I've attached the control.xml file, if it makes it through the listserv. Thanx, Mike.

[opensuse] printer problem

HP 970Cxi, SuSE 9.3. Printer stopped printing after it ran out of paper. Yes, of course it has paper in it now. I have 2 of these printers, and neither one will print anymore, altho when I exchanged them, the system said "Found new hardware, do you want to configure it?" So I did, and it printed a test page. But now I can't seem to get back into the configuration, which must have some sort of problem, and the d....d Linux wants to open a wallet, whatever that means, and it wants a user name and a password, neither of which I know. (I never set up any wallet, or any password for that, as far as I recall.) This printer is connected via USB. Now what? Second printer problem: I would be happy to use my Laserjet, but for some reason the configuration says that YaST didn't set up HPLIP--it would seem that it can't--and when I try to test the configuration the print light on the Laserjet starts to flash, but it doesn't print anything either. [opensuse] External USB hotswap HDDs

Hi Thanks to those of you who made suggestions when I could not get 10.2 to recognise a CoolGear USB removable HDD. It turned out the problem was with the USB hub inside the external case drawing too much current and lowering the voltage to marginal levels. It was drawing its current from the server USB socket despite the fact that the external case had its own power supplied from the wall AC socket. My hardware man cured the problem by connecting the +5v regulated supply from the power circuitry to the hub (via the key switch). Turns out the box was an earlier model - the manufacturer now supplies boxes with the same mod. This prompts 2 questions though. Any advice would be gratefully accepted. 1. Is it OK to just unplug the device without using umount? My practice hitherto has been to: 1. plug the cable into both the server and the case. 2. put the disktray in the case. 3. Switch on the power to the case 4. switch on the tray keyswitch, and wait for the lights to settle 5. Access the device via /media/disk (or whatever shows up in mount for /dev/sdb1 This is not as complex as it sounds, and probably not too important. Now comes the part that bothers me: To remove the disc, I have been doing the following: 1. umount /dev/sdb1 (or whatever) 2. switch off the disktray 3. remove the disktray In fact there is a keylock. You cannot remove the disktray unless you unlock with the key. The question: Is step 1 necessary or unnecessarily cautious.
