Hi, Switching to Linux with OpenSUSE 10.2 (x86_64) in my desktop. Installation picked up almost all my hardware which I am very happy about. Using a ATI Radeon X850XT which was detected correctly. Once all installed I started with eye candy stuffs (Xgl, Beryl etc). Doesn't work!! As soon as I enable Xgl, on reboot my X crashes. I did not find OpenSuSE ATI docs to be very clear. How do I know if the installer+updates during install used a ATI driver? How do I check the info/version of the installed driver? Do I need to install a latest from ATI site anyway? They say they are compitable uptoto Xorg 7.1 only. OpenSuSE 10.2 has 7.2 RC (which is a 7.1 in real version numbering) . Is that OK? [opensuse] ATI driver problems - continued

This is an updated post on problem getting the new ATI driver to work. I can get to KDE, but there are things still broken. What I've done so far: 1. Installed the new ATI driver rpm (v. 8.35.5) thru YAST sources, got black screen, uninstalled. 2. Followed instructions at http://en.opensuse.org/ATI, made rpm, installed, got black screen. 3. Followed trouble shooting at the ATI page, never got past black screen. 4. Uninstalled the rpm. 5. I now have KDE, but my screensaver will not start. I see many others having problems with the ATI driver, some on this list, many others thru searching google. At this point I'd like to get back to my original defalult KDE/xorg install. I will try the ATI driver agian later, but for now I'd like to get back to the original install. How do I do this? Running glxinfo returns the following message, "glxinfo: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1: undefined symbol: drmCloseOnce" Running openSUSE 10.2, radeon 9800 pro. Thanks for any assistance. [opensuse] wireless for Integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG

Hi: Just bought an hp nx 7400 laptop with Integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. I'm trying to get the wireless working with openSuse 10.2 before wiping windows off the computer I set up my wireless router to communicate with the laptop. After replacing Windows with OpenSuse 10.2, I am unable to use wireless networking on the system. I have configured the wireless with the same parameters I used when Windows was on the system. The wireless hardware is recognized - I can configure the card in YAST - both the wired card and the wireless card are recognized. There is a wireless switch on the computer. I turn it on and the wirless indicator lights up on the switch and on the indicator lamp on the front of the laptop. When I run Network Manager it does not recognize that the system has wireless. When I run the KDE wireless monitor it states that wireless has been disabled. I see that Intel has a linux driver for this hardware: http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/ I am assuming installing this driver would get the wireless networking functional. I assume that since YAST recognizes that there is a wireless networking hardware on the computer that some of the necessary driver parts have been installed. Can anyone tell me how to determine what needs to be done to get this working, apart from completely installing the driver? Thanks, Gord -- Gordon J. [opensuse] Palm Pilot problems

I borrowed a Palm Pilot to use. I can't seem to get it to connect to my computer at all. I am not too familiar with these at all so please bear with me. The back of the unit says Palm TX, I have the usb cable for it. It can also connect via wireless, and I have actually done that while testing. When plugged in and I do an lsusb I do not see it in the list of devices, I do see my kb, mouse, and printer. The computer is an AMD 64, suse 10.2-x86-64 From what I see ther palm software Kpilot and Kitchensink are installed but I can't get them to see any device. How do I proceed? [opensuse] Changes in .RPM files - Their Technical Future - Personal issue.

Does anyone know what is contained the the last byte of an RPM update file. Hey you say.What the hell ?? I ask this question because in version 10.0.-10.1 I did not need to include an exemption from application gateway Layer inspection done by my IDS02. It is an easy thing to place exemptions in my IDS02. Without exemption, without failure, update RPM files will download but error out with "download halted with 1 byte remaining. The download traffic, either HTTP or FTP are both subject to ALG filtering in both directions. Are there any real comms'y type people who understand how RPM packets have changed in format from 10.0-10.1 so we can all understand, please try to keep it simple, as I think this would be a very interesting topic of conversation for many. In the case I sighted above, the last packet has been accepted, however its as if there is NO EOF marker lest EOP marker. I am probably being a little selfish in asking a question that helps me only, however with the inclusion of describing the change in .RPM files lately, would seem one worth discussing - There is still a huge argument raging as to the value of remaining committed to the .RPM files. I will try to search for the comms article that I have stored that explains a technical argument of further development of the .RPM file and its package Management in the light of being able to reliably update an extrapolated native traffic issue and Red Hat and opens suse users over the next 10 years. Just about every Laser printer in the Market, and NOTHING to do with brand/Model, will either has a PCL or Postscript emulation. Printer Control Language is propriety (PCL) to HP. There are a few exception, notably a small release of cannon laser printer which were released with their proprietary language (casual) (sp). IF your Laser Printer Model is not in the list of drivers - its time to dig out the user manual and find out what the engine language is based upon. You would normally expect a PCL/ v X. /I.E PCL3/45/6 etc.. You could also find a Postscript emulation option to either Postscript level 1 or 2. In this case an Apple Laser writer 2NTX would be fine - there is a trade off using postscript and that is the print files are outrageously large and I am being very serious here, however Postscript is Postscript is Postscript. Before using a native emulation print driver there are 2 things that will require you to obtain the Badged Label Driver and these include. - Multiple paper trays - Some degree of differences in printable page area - which possibly will never effect you - Software enhancements that provide greater DPI accuracy Now you CAN find a printer driver, based on its emulation, not its badge. And this, depending on your situation may get you out of a whole lot of bother. Comments welcome from all Scott

I have an LVM consisting of 3 300GB SATA drives reporting the wrong usage info... Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/system-Data 839G -64Z 872G 101% /data I can access the volume with no problem and all its files and folders, but applications complain of no disk space when there is only ~175GB used on the volume. I had a curious problem with my keyboard, related to Kde (openSUSE 10.1) I know it's Kde, because I could fixit :-), but not on a convenient way. Having been unsuccessful with my ATI Radeon card, I treated myself to an nVidia 7600 graphics card. I've added the download.nvidia repository and installed the drivers, but running glxgears gives the following :~> glxgears Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0". 1074 frames in 5.0 seconds = 214.689 FPS 1221 frames in 5.0 seconds = 244.026 FPS 1221 frames in 5.0 seconds = 244.039 FPS 1221 frames in 5.0 seconds = 244.031 FPS 1221 frames in 5.0 seconds = 244.034 FPS I'm sure it should do better than that, and I'm not sure what to do about that missing extension :( Any suggestions, please? [opensuse] Video editing with Cinelerra & Kino

I am using Kino to capture my miniDV movies, and would like to use Cinelerra for the editing, but it runs pig slow even though I've recently upgraded my graphics card to nvidia 7600 and got direct rendering working. Having read Rob Fisher's <http://www.robfisher.net> excellent guides I understand that cinelerra needs it's movie clips to be in *.mov format. Kino can capture in raw DV or *.avi. Does anyone know of a utility for encapsulating *.dv files into *.mov format. The utility mentioned by Rob Fisher doesn't work here. [opensuse] Bonding two network card

Hi People, I configured bonding (mode=1 - active-backup) and it seems to work properly but there's on thing which maybe I'm missing. Two network cards are used, as far as I understood one is the master (eth0) and the other one (eth1) is the slave. Testing the job I found that when eth0 goes down the bond0 interface still replies to the IP requests whereas if the eth1 goes down the bond0 doesn't work anymore though the it's up and running. I also tried using the mode=3 (broadcast) which seems to be the other choice for multiple switch topology network but I have the same problem. What I simply need is a fault tolerance only configuration where one network card is connected to one switch and the other one to another switch. Any advice? I'm an administrator of one of polish sites about suse and opensuse: susek.info about 3 years of my work I have a clear view about problem of polish users. I use to favour Firefox for my web browsing. Recently I upgraded my computer to AMD core duo processor and a 64 bit version of Firefox does not work properly. Java does not work, flash animations fail and the major problem is that when I try to access HTTPS servers. I get this message: The connection was reset The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. Hello, I've recently upgraded my RAM to 4GB and since then, when the X server starts, the computer slows down a lot - what I mean by slows down is that: - although there is some occasional hard disk activity, I never see the KDE Desktop, I only get the mouse pointer and that's it - if I start a console with Ctrl+Alt+F1, it takes about a minute to see the command prompt from the moment I type my (correct) password - if after logging in I use the Midnight Commander, it's response is very slow and slurgish and navigation through folders is very slow When I still had 2GB everything was ok. I'm using openSUSE 10.2 on a Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86 Ghz, 4 MB L2 Cache, FSB 1066 Mhz / Intel DP965LT motherboard / 4 x 1 GB Corsair DDR2 675 Mhz, 4-4-4-12 / ATI Radeon EAX1300 256MB / WDC S-ATA II 250 GB HDD. Booting the XEN kernel (second option in the bootloader) works (but no ATI video driver is taken into consideration, it defaults to VESA mode), but using the default one causes the above problem. Could you please be as kind so as to give me a suggestion to fix this issue? It's really frustrating, as Windows XP and Vista work ok (but they don't see the entire 4GB, only 3.25 GB), but I would rather use Linux instead (and hopefully have all 4GB available).
