[opensuse] subversion install (Suse 9.3)

Hello, Installing subversion from source and I was able to find the Berkeley DB files needed to compile (loaded the development package from the DVD), however although Apache2 is installed (from the DVD) I can't locate the apxs files. [opensuse] need some help with a dodgy server

Hi there, I've got a server - p4 3ghz, supermicro 5014c mobo, 2x512 pc3500, 2x160GB sata hdd, 16x dvdr etc. Anyway it was previously running suse9.2 fine. Gone through some changes but i tried to upgrade it to 10.0 and it had some issues where the installer was saying it was missing packages. I had previously used the same installation media on another machine and it worked fine. So i thought id do a clean install on it... same problem. Did the check media thing during installation and it said it failed md5 checksum. I tried the disk on another machine and it installed fine. I've reset the bios to factory defaults, checked the hard drives by plugging them into another machine (OS installed fine onto them), i've switched out the dvd drive to a different one, done a memory test. Still getting the same problem. Tried 10.2 and get the same missing packages error on install and md5 checksum fail. Tried CentOS and it has an error installing packages. I tried windows XP (yeahyeah) and it looped during the install, asked me for registration key and computer name, installed, then asked for reg key and computer name again, installed then booted properly. But it only found one of the 2 hard drives. Can anyone offer any assistance? I was intrigued because it seemed to behave different than what I remembered from 10.1. The PDF format can embed font definitions in the PDF file, but supposedly it doesn't embed some fonts it knows about, like "Times-Roman", saving considerable space. This was not happening. I have discovered that 10.1 and 10.2 handle this quite differently, and I believe it is a bug. I have done tests using OOo-writer in both SuSE 10.1 and 10.2, using three fonts: 1) The printer font "Times" (you need to select options/ writer/ compatibility "use printer metrics" to make this font appear). Supposedly, this font should never be embedded into the PDF file. 2) Truetype "Nimbus Roman No9 L", a free Times font, and 3) Truetype "Times New Roman", from Microsoft. First I export to PDF from inside the OOo writer, then I print to postscript, finally I convert this .ps to PDF using "ps2pdf14 test.ps", and compare. The numbers in the table are the filesizes in bytes. I get the font info from the command "pdffonts test.pdf" (the filesize corroborating this). I always use the same "test.odt" file for each test, changing only the font used in the text (same font for the whole file, but one single letter bigger point size). But in 10.2 OOo always embeds the three fonts. "Times" is embedded as "NimbusRomNo9L-Regular", which I consider a BUG. It is curious to note that OOo embeds "Times New Roman" when exporting, but the info is not included into the .ps file, thus resulting in "ps2pdf test.ps" not embedding the font - this is peculiar. It is also interesting to notice that OOo always embeds "NimbusRomNo9L-Regular" twice, resulting a pdf ten times bigger than the one generated through command line ps2pdf14. [opensuse] Beagle Configuration

I know many (most?) dislike beagle and turn it off, but I actually have a need to use it right now, and thought it would be a good solution to finding some information I have mis-placed. I have a bunch of tar'd gzip'd mail files (plain text nothing outlandish they were IMAP accessed) that are archives, from reading on the beagle-project.org site it looks like they should be indexed when beagle does its indexing, as "archive files" are supported out of the box (or at least thats the indication I am getting). Unfortunately it does not appear that those files are getting indexed, as they never show up when I do a beagle-query for a string I know is in them. Other items in that folder are getting indexed, permissions are the same. So I figured maybe its just something thats turned off, and so I did a beagle-info --list-filters and did not any mime types applicable for archives. So now I am left with the question, how do I turn this on, if its off, or do I need to create my own filter/backend for this? [opensuse] odd random behavior

I noticed that the opensuse updater icon displayed a yellow triangle with a black "!". It said that another process was accessing it. I went to Ksysguard and nothing was using system or user resources other than Ksysguard. I rebooted the machine and I got the walking penguin winter scene instead of the usual blue screen when the kernel started. [opensuse] 64 bit gcc problem

I have just upgraded my linux machine to a 64 bit AMD CPU and openSUSE 10.2. As a result of the upgrade I find it necessary for me to compile (or recompile for the 64 bit machine) several programs that are quite important for my research. The problem is that the 64 bit gcc distribution doesn't include g77, which unfortunately is essential. In attempting to compile gcc (I actually did that for a 32 bit machine some years ago now, mainly by pure dumb luck and great assistance from users). I have run into a problem with my attempt to compile the src. The compile runs for quite awhile until I get the following error message: 'In file included from /usr/include/features.h:346, from /usr/include/stdio.h:28, from ../../gcc/system.h:90, from ../../gcc/crtstuff.c:68: /usr/include/gnu/stubs.h:7:27: error: gnu/stubs-32.h: No such file or directory make[4]: *** [32/crtbegin.o] Error 1' /usr/lib/gnu contains stubs-64.h and stubs-h but no stubs-32.h. I have two questions: 1. Is there a compiled version of the complete gcc distribution that I can install? 2. In which package in the 64bit 10.2 distribution will I find the missing file? [opensuse] Compaq nc6120 laptop: Overheating

Hi, I am experiencing overheating problems with my Compaq nc6120 laptop. I have installed opensuse 10.2 recently. Subjectively I noticed that the laptop is getting hotter than usual (I previously used ubuntu 5.10 - kernel 2.6.12). Under load (updating the distro with yast + running openoffice and a brower sufficies) I get temperature shutdowns after a few minutes. It seems that in termal zone 4 a critical temperature is reached (ie. more that 110 degrees C). I knew this phenomenon already from ubuntu 5.10 (and also from mandriva 2006). Adding noapic and nolapic as boot parameters helped to tackle this problem. With opensuse 10.2 (incl. all updates) this did not really change the problem (although I subjectlively think that it now takes longer for the temperature shutdown to occur). I tried different combinations of boot parameters + updated the bios to the most recent version. I also tried to exclude the acpi module fan from loading (which was one of the hints I found on the web). Using more recent kernels (from an opensuse repository) does not alter the problem either! The only "solution" up to now is to use the "energy saving" cpu throttling (800 Mhz instead of 2.1 GhZ). Then laptop does not overheat, but it is of course a lot slower. On ubuntu 5.10 together with kernel 2.6.12 everthing still works smoothly (without throttling the cpu down), so I suspect, that there is some kind of misconfiguration problem on my side, or a bug in opensuse or more likely the kernel.
