[opensuse] Installing 10.2 but keeping my files

Hi, After running with SUSE 10.1 for a while I've decided it's time to upgrade to openSUSE 10.2. What I'd like to do is a fresh 10.2 install while keeping all my /home files (they are on a separate partition). But I can't seem to get the installer to leave that partition alone. My 80-gig hard disk is partitioned as follows: sdb1: 1.5GB Linux swap sdb2: 20GB Linux (reiserfs) / sdb3: 53GB Linux (reiserfs) /home The installer thinks I should make sdb3 an 'extended partition' and then create two additional partitions (sdb4 and sdb5) on it, for housing / and /home, respectively. If I try to alter this setup I can't make it leave sdb3 as it is... If I decide to request a partition scheme by using sdb2 and sdb3 allocated space, it then thinks I should delete (not just format) those partitions and create identical new ones in their place! Even if I set it up to not format sdb3, it still lists both partitions as being up for deletion and re-creation. I don't know what to do. I'd like to start fresh without losing my files, if possible. Can I accomplish that without moving an awful lot of files to another storage? Anybody use Dolphin? How do you like it? I was reading about KDE 4.0 and how they're planning on incorporating the Dolphin File Manager as an addition to Konqueror. I was wondering if people here had used it on their KDE3 desktops. [opensuse] OpenOffice and bytecode interpreter

In my continuing quest to get bytecode Truetype fonts (Tahoma) rendered correctly under 10.2 and OpenOffice 2.1 (as it was on 10.0), I have recompiled the freetype-1.3.1 lib. Looking for the enable define for bytecode interpreter I found that it was already enabled. ie in ft_conf.h.in #undef TT_CONFIG_OPTION_NO_INTERPRETER Did openSUSE pay Apple for this - the default is suppose to be disabled? or am I missing something. Whatever the answer, it still does not work for OpenOffice 2.1; Tahoma menu fonts, under 18px, renders horribly (rest of the system is fine). I did check with ldd that soffice.bin links against the new libfreetype.so. [opensuse] Does zypper detect new package versions?

In my 10.1 days I got used to working with ZMD, which had more than its share of problems, but also was able to tell me when new versions of installed packages became available in the repositories. I decided to drop ZMD in favor of zypper in 10.2, and either I am doing something wrong or it can't show me new versions; I used "zypper sa" to add basically the same repositories, but afterwards no updates were shown, even after manually telling it to check for them. If I use Yast Software Management I can see (and install) the newer versions quite easily. Does zypper only work with YOU patches, or is the feature I'm looking for available but I'm just not doing it right? [opensuse] [ALMOST SOLVED] how to deliver archive to/from Windows user while ensure filenames in archive not corrupted

I have tested a lot how we can solve this problem: WE cannot avoid it: some day you need to send several files to a Windows user: you use a packing tool either because there are many files or because the file had been too fat and can be compressed. What format to use: most western people I think will choose zip, for me I got a problem: the Chinese file names, after un-packaged on Windows, is junk text because on Linux we all use UTF-8 and Windows Chinese version using different charset (GB18030) And I have tested a lot different formats: Format Created by Opened by Filename readable after unpackaged? zip 7-zip_win32 FileRoller no zip FileRoller 7-zip_win32 no rar WinRAR 3.6 FileRoller yes! rar FileRoller WinRAR 3.6 no iso mkisofs -J WinRAR 3.6 yes! jar FileRoller 7-zip no tar GnuTar WinRAR 3.6 no tar 7-zip GnuTar no cab IExpress cabextract no Note: * WinRAR 3.6 is actually WinRAR 3.60-Beta * 7-zip_win32 is a Windows software, the open-source alternative to WinRAR, can unpackage zip/tar/rar/7z formats and can create zip/tar/7z archives * IExpress is a Microsoft utility pre-installed on most Windows computers. This utility can create CAB format archive * FileRoller is SuSE 10.2's default gnome archive manager * in all above archive formats, TAR and ISO are non-compressing format, e.g. they only archive (collect files into one file). To compress them you can use gzip. So the conclusion is: 1. To send an archive file to other windows user, the only known way that can ensure file names are NOT corrupted due to locale difference is to make the archive with "mkisofs -J", unfortunately no very easy graphical user interface for this purpose. If compression is needed, compress with gzip and Windows user who have WinRAR installed can open it. 2. To send an archive file from Windows to SuSE Linux user, the only known way that can ensure filenames are not corrupted due to locale difference is to make RAR archive with WinRAR (only tested v3.60-beta). 3. Non of known Linux archive formats can handle character-set conversion. "mkisofs -J" is actually using a Microsoft format, and WinRAR is proprietary; 4. 7z format is not tested because most Windows & Linux users cannot directly create/open 7z format archive without install special software so it cannot be used as a general solution. This information might be very useful for asian people on this list. P.S. I have already spent a lot of time getting this partial conclusion, would be very appreciated if someone provide more insightful suggestions or correction! P.S. "mkisofs -J" do not allow file names with more then 64 characters. [opensuse] Compaq Presario V3040TU headphone jack and speaker sensing problem.

Hi, I got another problem on my laptop. My speaker and my headphone jack got no problem. Both got sound out. But the problem is when I plug in my headphone to headphone jack, my speakers still get sound. What happen actually? Sensing problem? Hi, I've been having a look on how crontab is setup on default Suse 9.2/10.0/10.1 servers, since i wanted to find out when logs are being rotated. as far as i can see, the default crontab entries (in /etc/cron.daily, etc/cron.hourly etc.) are being scheduled via the /etc/crontab master file: -*/15 * * * * root test -x /usr/lib/cron/run-crons && /usr/lib/cron/run-crons >/dev/null 2>&1 59 * * * * root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.hourly 14 4 * * * root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.daily 29 4 * * 6 root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.weekly 44 4 1 * * root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.monthly but at what time does for example /etc/cron.daily/* get run ? i assume it is the run-crons script that is responsible for this, but i can't see when exactly all the different cron entries (daily for example) are being run. it's important for me because i want to schedule sarg (squid statistics generator) at 2 pm and i want to be sure that i always run logrotate (to rotate squid logs) exactly might. on redhat, the /etc/crontab is a lot clearer about this: this is /etc/crontab on redhat: # run-parts 01 * * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.hourly 59 23 * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.daily 22 4 * * 0 root run-parts /etc/cron.weekly 42 4 1 * * root run-parts /etc/cron.monthly How can do that in Suse (run-parts don't work on suse?!) [opensuse] Cant get syslog server my w/station to accept 514 connections for remote logging.

Hi List I have been trying to get my OpenSuSE 10.2 Retail Client to accept remote logs from mail server. I have configured the mail servers and amended the iptables rules to suit.
