[opensuse] CD woes on Thinkpad R40.

This problem occurs with several current distros, I'm asking here because I'm running OpenSUSE 10.2 right now. I've been having these problems pretty solidly while running Linux, but the installations all run okay. Afterwards though, the problem all-but-hangs the system. It seems to work fine in Windows XP (SP2), and I've booted into the IBM diagnostics (PC Doctor) and run the full set of tests: it passed everything except writing DVDs, but since it's not a DVD burner that's no surprise. One, http://www.edlug.ed.ac.uk/archive/Sep2003/msg00143.html is fairly similar superficially, but I can get the errors without removing the DVD or the drive. There is this: http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0511.1/1112.html but I'm using a standard SUSE kernel. Note that, like my computer, that's a Thinkpad R40 At present, I'm running without the drive: I rhink that's the same model drive I have. At any rate, the system's an R40 model 2722-GDM. [opensuse] Fixed ports in NFS for Suse 9

Hi guys, We're running Suse 9 and unfortunately there's a machine that is to be placed behind a DMZ so we need to enable NFS through the DMZ firewall. I did a bit of research and figured out these steps to ensure that NFS uses fixed ports. I just wanted to check that this was okay: 1. nfsd - defaults to 2049 2. portmapper - defaults to 111 3. mountd - edit /etc/sysconfig/nfs to include line MOUNTD_PORT=4002 4. lockd/statd - edit /etc/modules.conf to include line options lockd nlm_udpport=4004 nlm_tcpport=4004 5. Restart nfsserver service 6. Run modprobe? Are there any dangers in forcing mountd and lockd to use fixed ports all the time? Also, are there any 'standards' for fixed nfs ports? Various websites have different ideas. I eventually settled on suggested ports in a RHCE course book. [opensuse] How do I save the desktop in Gnome?

[opensuse] tall PNG images don't load in Firefox

I have a problem with loading some PNG images in Firefox. The images are generated using GD and most of the images load OK, but some don't. As near as I can tell, it is tall (or maybe just big?) images that won't load. If I just load the PNG by itself, I see a message saying that the image cannot be displayed because it contains errors. I can successfully display these images with either xv or gimp and neither complains of any irregularities. I put one of the files at <http://www.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/dhoworth/f208c50af8a68669c364c22849f1d1de.png>. It's 190 kB and 820x36564 pixels. The little feedback I got on the Firefox forum was that Firefox on Windows can load the image OK, whilst Ubuntu has the same problem as me, so I'm wondering if it's a GNU/Linux library issue rather than a Mozilla core one. We're all using Firefox 1.5.0.9 Has anybody else come across this problem? Do any of you using Firefox 2 see the problem? [opensuse] Adding Xbox to LAN

My home network consists of two boxes running 10.2 connected to the net via an etec router. box 1 is connected directly to the router via ethernet cable. box 2 is connected viia wi fi My son has an Xbox which we would like to add to the lan. My question is can we do this via box 2. I'm thinking that if I enabled the on board NIC on box 2 I could use SUSEfirewall to connect that nic to the Xbox. Is this where I should start, and if so can somebody give me a start on how to configure it with yast ? The edges of letters on part of the display become blurry, provoking headache because my eyes tries to adjust to what seems like unfocused letters. I have also rebooted another partition with 10.1 to see if I had a hardware problem, but no, 10.1 displays perfectly (same /etc/X11/xorg.conf file). There are more symptoms. The screen in sax was slightly off-center; I adjusted it, saved, started X... which ignores my settings. Ok, then I use my TFT "auto" button, which till now had worked perfectly to automatically adjust my display; in 10.2 it "centers" the display fully half side out! Sax created this modeline: Modeline "1024x768" 78.65 1024 1056 1184 1312 768 772 776 792 -HSync -VSync I replaced it with the line I have been using since 9.1 in all my partitions: Modeline "1024x768" 78.80 1024 1072 1168 1312 768 769 772 800 I think it is ignored. My "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file is the exact same one as was in 10.1. If I manually center the display (using the buttons in the monitor), I can do it, but some letters are fuzzy: that my biggest problem, as I said. My TFT has an adjustment named "phase" which does affect the fuzziness: but, if I get the right side clear, the center is fuzzy. I manage to adjust the center, then the left side is wrong. I can't find a perfect setting! :-( I have tried using different vertical frequencies (there is a gadget in both gnome and kde panels for that), with variable results, but none is perfect. The problem is the same in kde or gnome, or with different users. I have tried both the "nv" and "nvidia" (ie, oss and proprietary) drivers. No good. Even in text mode I have problems: if I center (on the monitor) tty1, then tty2..10 are half a centimeter off the screen (the left 4 or 5 letters are lost). [opensuse] Gnome stable on SUSE 10.0 ... and evolution

Before you say 'it is always risky to update', I know all that. I just updated my 10.0 GNOME to the stable version opensuse. Well, evolution is no longer a happy camper. It starts and hangs.
