[opensuse] Aircards and Linux.

Hey, I was just thinking about this. You know those aircards you can get from your cellphone provider and be able to connect to the internet using the cellphone network. Anyways, has anyone tried to use one under Linux? Maybe you know the theory behind it or something. I think it's treated like a PPP dial-up but I am not sure. [opensuse] Apps fail to exit cleanly

I posted a part of this last week, but excused it as I had not pulled in all the upgrades for 10.2. Now I have everything current, I believe, and still have the issue++. It started with Firefox leaving 'firefox-bin' running, so a new session will not start until I remove firefox-bin with either top or "killall firefox-bin". In addition, I have seen similar instances with kinternet refusing to start, thinking it is still running. Killall then re-launch gets it going. And the third part of the puzzle...over the past week, on logging into gnome, and launching evolution, I will get the keyring password window maybe 1 out of three times. When I do get the keyring login, evolution works fine. When I don't, I have to enter my pop password every time I check mail. (of course, if I'm on kde or fvwm, I have the password issue anyway...) So far I have not found any error logs to shed light on this. The firefox issue is repeatable in my laptop AND the kids pc, all three running 10.2. All three of the above complaints are intermittent, which really has me scratching my head! It will happen in kde, fvwm, gnome OR twm. perhaps it is related to the recent thread about smp kernel as the default? Linux master 2.6.18.2-34-default #1 SMP Mon Nov 27 11:46:27 UTC 2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux this is an athlon fx 2800 with a gig of ram (32-bit). [opensuse] vnc on dial-up and why 5800 is open?!

Hi, My mom's stock/boxed SUSE 8.2 is on dial-up. Sometimes I teach her to do tasks via vnc, being located in another country. I'm new to vnc, but the desktop sharing we do from her KDE session is simple and the thing works quite well... The only thing I would change is to avoid seeing her desktop image when connecting, which would surely accelerate the speed of the connection a lot. I use SUSE 9.1 with KDE 3.3.x, where there was an option to hide desktop background when connecting, but on her earlier KDE's Control Center there was no option like this and disableBackground=true in her respective config file was also without any effect:( Any idea/work-around please to achieve the needed effect or acce- lerate on another way the vnc connection's speed?! The second related question is that on her computer I saw TCP 5800 listening. I didn't see it before she activated the desktop sharing and would be interested, how it could get opened. I didn't activate vnc through xinetd and chkconfig reports it (as supposed) to be deactivated. The only thing is that via KDE's Control Panel we acti- vated the above desktop sharing and immediately moved it to a higher port number. TCP 5800 I just saw accidentally and is anyway firewal- led; the particular port needed by me has been opened under the SuSEfirewall2. Thank you for any thoughts, comments. So my notebook, I take from network to network to network since I travel a lot. I like protection but i can't bring my office network with me wherever I go. What is a good firewall that you can install on individual clients rather than networks? I have never thought about it so I am not sure so I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. [opensuse] Custom modelines in opensuse 10.2

Hi all, I'm trying to set up a MythTV box using suse 10.2 and am having troubles getting any sort of custom modelines to show up as an option in the resolution changer application. So first my hardware. It's an Asus barebones P.C. (Spec documented at http://users.sisna.com/mcole/asus-t2-ah1-mythtv-linux.html) which has an AMD Athlon 64 CPU and onboard ATI Radion X300 video. I'm trying to use the DVI output to connect to a Samsung plasma HDTV (using HDMI port). I've tried modifying the xorg.conf file, then rebooting, logging out/in, killing gdm and running startx, etc. No matter what I do, the resolutions I add do not seem to appear in the "change resolution" application in the default gnome based desktop. In fact the list in this application does not seem to line up with the xorg.conf file at all. (There are resolutions there which are definitly not listed as modes in the xorg.conf file). So, my question is this: Once I add a custom modeline in the xorg.conf file, how do I switch to that resolution from the Gnome desktop? Strangely enough, I think the modes are being used by gdm (the aspect ratio looks like a widescreen HDTV setup), but once the desktop starts up, the mode seems to be gone? Have noticed with identical calling args, the less from 10.2 (less-394-32) counts lines incorrectly (appear to be not counting lines that wrap). [opensuse] Separate /srv partition for a home file server?

I am preparing a small server for my house hold with openSUSE 10.2. It will primarily work as a file server (samba) with each users own ~home, as well as some shares for mp3s etc. Maybe I will also install Apache if I can find a nice web based "jukebox" for accessing mp3s to various client computers. My disk drive is 250 GB. I am thinking about something like: swap 1 GB / 10 GB /home 240 GB 1) Is is OK with one 10 GB / for both software, logs etc? Or should I give e.g. /var its own partition? 2) Should I consider a separate /srv partition for mp3s etc, or will I do just fine but placing shared folders in a sparate home directory which everybody in my household can access? [opensuse] Kmail and imap on OpenSuse 10.0

I am running kmail on OpenSuse 10.0, using the latest KDE 3.5.6 build. The problem I am having has been around in previous releases as well. kmail connects to a local imap server (courier-imap-4.0.4-3.2) to access mail. The maildir is populated by procmail as mail arrives, sorting messages into numerous folders as they arrive. kmail does not access the maildir, but is told to talk to the imap server. The issue I have with kmail is that it seems to get the wrong idea of when there is a new message in a folder. Quite often it will say there are 50 new messages when there are none. When I click on the folder, it figures that there were none. But until I click on the folder, the wrong idea about new messages remains. There is no other process (other than procmail) accessing the maildir folder. kmail is the only client to this imap server. I use evolution in the exact same setup and it never gets this wrong. So I cannot believe the imap server is the cause. Unless evolution silently deals with this. [opensuse] Splash screen

When I log into Suse 10.2 and before KDE is finished loading, I get an opensuse splash screen with the "chases it's tail" activity indicator instead of the KDE stuff. I have yet to find how to kill the opensuse screen. Hi, Suse 10.0 x86_64 (but it was the same way with 9.3 i386). When a bad CD (with scratches or dirty) is inserted in the CDROM, after some retries to read the data somehow the DMA is disabled. Then I have to manually enable it using hdparm, otherwise it is never restored, even if I put a good disk in the device. The script reads the "/etc/apache2/envvars" to set optional environment variables, like "LD_LIBRARY_PATH". What would be the equivalent on an OpenSuSE distribution? Hi guys, I haven't had to do this in ages, and with Mantel gone, I'm not sure where to find "official unofficial" kernels for SUSE. ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/i386/HEAD has only the kernel package, no kernel-source package (which I will need for ATi drivers and the like). And in http://ftp-1.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/Kernel/SUSE_Linux_10.1/i586/ the kernel version is different from the source. Where do we go these days? [opensuse] YaST2 installation Source

openSUSE 10.2 with latest updates. Today when I started opensuse updater, it reported hdc and hdd were not found. Went into YaST2 --> installation source and they were missing. All other sources I've entered were OK. Smart also missing them. ZMD has been deinstalled as I have no networked systems and it was slow. Tryed to find way to add both cd and dvd on same line so YaSt2 would look for either one (Like original install). Where does YaSt store the installation sources? Could not do it. Was able to install both as individual entries. Can you point to a way to re add them as originally entered during install. Searched bus, none found like this. Also wiki and google did not turn anything up. [opensuse] never empty trash bin

Hi People, My trash bin seems to have something inside but it doesn't. Suddenly I have my icon showing an always full trash bin thus I empty it. Further, when I try to empty it when it's already empty I get a error message saying that an old file I removed days ago doesn't exist. I couldn't even find where it is located on the filesystem in order to try to fix it through command line. Strange, isn't it? Hi All, I try to install opensuse 10.2 using this method http://en.opensuse.org/Network_Installation_Source I usually able to install it (at least in suse 10.0, 10.1), but when try 10.2, I got this error: 'ISOLINUX 3.31 0xblah... isolinux: Image checksum error'. I have copied all files di loader as in website says cp -a /srv/ftp/suse10.2/cd1/boot/loader/* . mkisofs -o ../netinst.iso -c boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -b isolinux.bin . And burn netinst.iso to 1 CD. Is that a problem in making network boot CD ? Cause i saw a warning in making DVD in http://en.opensuse.org/Making_a_DVD_from_CDs something about 'lack of signing installation sources'.. If it so, then can I still using network installation ? Cause I already download 5 iso CD's but I rather burn all iso to CD's..
