[opensuse] Error should be sent to WINS server

I have a SLED installation which is getting a significant flow of messages out of nmdb like the following: Feb 12 18:29:15 haight nmbd[16933]: [2007/02/12 18:29:15, 0] nmbd/nmbd_incomingrequests.c:process_name_refresh_request(172) Feb 12 18:29:15 haight nmbd[16933]: process_name_refresh_request: unicast name registration request received for name CADTECH<00> from IP 192.168.0.226 on subnet UNICAST_SUBNET. I don't have a wins server, and samba is not configured to be one. Its a single subnet, and I've never needed a wins server in such cases. Samba is not configured as a domain controller either as its a simple work group server. How can I stop these messages, and why is it that this is the only network I manage that is generating these? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Has anyone got this working? I'm trying to remote in using windows/tighvnc client and I cannot get it working. I have gone into sax2 and enabled remote management but it will not connect. Is there somewhere else I need to enable something to make it work? I have a server at work running suse enterprise server and it works fine on there. Hi Guys, I am trying to get my .nanorc to work, I looked for the nanorc.sample, but I don't see one in the /usr/share/doc file. I wrote my own .nanorc, but it not reading it. Where can I tell it to read it. Hi all, an update: as promised, I kept searching and... I buied a Linux journal with an OpenSuse DVD. This time, that worked! I again cannot understand what changed; the only reason I can see is the different media type. How can I make sure about the new DVD having the same content of my other DVD not working? Cross-checking the MD5 of all files (!) ? By the way: I updated my Suse 9.3 with OpenSuse 10.2. It seems all worked well, with the exception of printer settings (and Samba still works :) ). [opensuse] umount automounted media

Hello everybody, I have a little problem dismounting automounted media (CDROM). If a device is automounted within a user account I want to dismount it in the same useraccount. If I try to dismount the device I get the message "The device /dev/hdc is not in fstab and You are not root". Checking the properties of this device learns that the user is correct. Checking the umount command tells that the set uid property is set. [opensuse] Losing Evolution passwords on 10.2

Problem: Evolution constantly prompts for mail account passwords when retrieving mail - even though the setting is to remember passwords. Background: I had a fully functional 10.0 system with several email identities. Each identity has the Remember password box checked. I bought a new drive & installed 10.2 on it and copied my home directory from the old drive to the new one (drag-n-drop via Konqueror). Now, Evolution constantly prompts for each mail identity password when retrieving mail. I looked in my archives and did not see anything on this. Has anyone else seen this?? [opensuse] Printer issues

Epson Color Photo RX600, test prints fine, with colors, but output for every print job has solid black for all colors and grayscale. What am I missing? I tried looking at CUPS manager but did not see anything amiss, like a checkbox for no color. Most recent is Kontact calendar, prints solid boxes for all date lines, title boxes, and so on. Printer driver in YAST printer setup shows RX600 with simplified Gutenprint. I am sure it is something simple, which is good, as am I. Thanks for any guidance. This is probably a known bug (I have reported it and I am now getting emails that they are working on the problem). You probably only installed gnome. To get this to work, you need to have the KDE desktop manager installed/active instead of the gnome desktop manager. After installing KDE, even if you don't use it, then you have to make it the login/desktop manager. [opensuse] Transfers from some websites stall -- but only under OpenSUSE 10.2?

I'm running OpenSUSE 10.2, and I'm having an odd problem where I can access some web sites fine, but transfers from others stall. The problem happens on an intermittent basis with various sites, but it's most consistent with http://www.cyberspace.org/. Experimentation shows that I can use SSH or telnet to that site but transfering a file of any size stalls. Testing shows that the site loads fine from Windows 2000 on the problem machine, and from SUSE 10.1 on another machine on the same LAN. The problem happens both on my LAN at home *and* on the one at work, ruling out a routing issue. It sounded like a classic MTU problem to me, but experimenting with the MTU didn't really help. Also, I can send large pings to cyberspace.org and they come back, suggesting packet size is not the issue. System details: IBM Thinkpad T22, OpenSUSE 10.2, kernel 2.6.18.2-34-default. Can anyone help with Amanda? I am currently running an Amanda server, with patched version 2.4.5p1 on RHEL 4, it currently backs up around 30 clients with various Fedora and Redhat versions no problem. I have recently installed OpenSuse 10.2 on 2 of my boxes and cannot seem to get Amanda running. I have tried the latest version 2.5 from the OS 10.2 tree, and also 2.4.5 (inc case of version compatibility problems) from the 10.1 Suse tree, but neither of them seem to work. The server reports back selfcheck request timed out. Host down? I have made sure the firewall is off and that Amanda is on with checkconfig. I have denied the service on the firewall and seen the rejected connect in the firewall log so I know the server is contacting the client. One of the systems does not even have a firewall installed. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure exactly when it was added, but someone thought it would be good to get rid of the system login script that is called for "interactive logins". I don't think this was intended and believe it to be a mistake. There is code in the system "bashrc" script, now, that calls the system "login" script (/etc/profile). The login specific scripts are supposed to be called for "interactive" logins -- not every time "/etc/bashrc.bashrc" is called. The login-specific bash scripts belong in "/etc/profile.d". The problem lines, added in /etc/bash.bashrc are: --------- # # Just in case the user excutes a command with ssh # if test -n "$SSH_CLIENT" -a -z "$PROFILEREAD" ; then . /etc/profile > /dev/null 2>&1 fi --------- This doesn't get called with "RSH" commands (insecure anyway, ssh usually substituted) but it does get called with "scp" and "rsync" (assuming config'ed to use with RSH). Please keep /etc/bashrc.bashrc as it's equivalence to .bashrc and use /etc/profile (and /etc/profile.d/) for login. Should I submit this somewhere as a bug? [opensuse] KDE Xorg error

Hello, So I've been using my computer all day and for a few months now with OpenSuSe 10.2 with no problem. Today I did nothing (that I can remember) to my computer to make this happen. Anyway, just a few minutes ago, I booted my desktop and KDM didn't start. Just regular old text mode. Startx had some error referring to x not being able to start. I know that Var has all the logs but I don't know where to look for the proper files. Any ideas of what's going on with my Linux. Like what can cause this commonly? Also, is there anything I can reinstall or configure to get things working? Worse case scenario, what can i do to get back to status quo? I have an Intel 950 GMA if that helps you at all. Installed openSUSE 10.2, dual-booting with Windows XP. Installation was fine with no errors. I cannot connect to Internet when using SUSE. Motherboard has two onboard NICs. In YaST, Network Cards, both NICs are detected and configured with same settings, showing as eth-bus devices 0 and 1. Both are set to be enabled on boot. Have tried setting them as Internal and External devices. Ifconfig only displays eth2 and the loopback interfaces. There isn't an eth2 device installed, so I don't know where this is coming from and eth2 doesn't display in YaST. Cable modem is connected to eth1. I'd like to have both Ethernet ports working, but at this point would settle for just one that can pick up its DHCP address and connect to the Internet. Any ideas? [opensuse] irq_balancer service on single cpu

I noticed that the irq_balancer service was enabled with an *, indicating that it was _not_ running. I disabled it in two 10.2 pc's here, YAST did its "stop" thing, and the return was "success". Seems like it _was_ running, I think... The result so far has been dramatic. A very simple example is kpat, the card game...with the service off, X response is smooth and fast. With the service on, card movement is slightly jerky. This is an ATI 9800 graphics card with 3d enabled. Perhaps a contributing factor is that I have 3 pci video cards, 2 of which are motion-detecting 6 cameras in zoneminder & mysql & apache, so my system is heavy on the irq's. But for whatever reason, I can say for certain it is better off without the irq_balancer enabled!
