[opensuse] 10.3 Problems - kstartupconfig, nvidia, intel

In order to comply with my IT department's need to encrypt all personal data on laptops, I removed my working 10.2 installation from my HP/Compaq NW9440 laptop (2G ram) and installed 10.3. I used KDAR (first mistake) to archive all my current stuff on an external hard drive. I've since spent about three hours in rebooting and installing dependencies to finally install KDAR since it was mysteriously removed from the 10.3 distro. In any case, I've got three major issues. First - I get the message "could not start kstartupconfig" right when my x server starts. The only things I could find were http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2005-12/msg00017.html and http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2006-10/msg00619.html Which don't seem to help much. Ideas? Also, I've installed the nvidia repository and changed to the nvidia drivers. Now my screen seems to freeze on a random basis - I can move the mouse around but no click and no keyboard input. Third, I can't seem to get wireless working worth a darn. I have an intel 3945A driver, installed. It won't see my wireless network about half the time. What's going on here? I've installed twice. I have a Toshiba p205d-s7454 laptop with a built in atheros wireless card. The chipset is 5006. I have tried SUSE, Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu, and no distribution configures the card. I have tried madwifi and ndiswrapper. Neither works for me. I need wireless, or the PC is useless to me. I will pay $50.00 to anyone who will stick with me and help me make it work. I don't care what distribution I run, although I prefer SUSE, and I would like to use KDE. I will reload from scratch if necessary. Currently it has opensuse 10.3 on it. All I ask is that you really know what you are doing, and not just make blind stabs at it from reading internet forums. I have read them all and tried them all. So I need some expert help. [opensuse] problem with lirc, opensuse 10.3

Other times, as with this post, they seem to either never appear, or take a very long time. I submitted the below message to the list yesterday, about 21 hours ago, and haven't seen it appear yet, nor have I received a bounce. My apologies if this is a double post.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm trying to build a Mythtv system, based on OpenSUSE 10.3. I've got almost everything installed and working, and am now trying, so far unsuccessfully, to get the remote control configured. My remote control is that supplied with a Hauppauge PVR-150. (Grey, not serial, not USB, with the 4 colored buttons arranged in a row at the bottom, not arranged around the 'OK' button near the top.) According to YAST lirc is installed. During my troubleshooting, I returned to YAST, and installed the 4 lirc kernel modules: default, bigsmp, xen, and xenpae. I was pretty sure I didn't need any other than 'default', but selected all of them in case I was wrong. Of course, that resulted in adding all of the additional kernels to my system & boot menu as well, but I can always either tolerate that or remove the others later, I assume. After adding the additional modules, I still have no functional lirc. I HAVE found an 'Oops' in /var/log/messages/, and also saw a message at the lirc sourceforge site mentioning a bug in lirc for the 2.6.22 kernel, and a patch to remedy the bug. Secondly, I found an online how-to for installing Mythtv to Suse 10.0 that advises removing the lirc packaged with Suse, and compiling/installing lirc from source. I'm using 10.3, & I don't know whether or not the advice holds for me. Deciding to give it a shot though, I launched YAST to try and uninstall the exisiting lirc on my system. YAST warned me that many components, nearly all or all of them Myth-related, were dependent on lirc, and removal of lirc would break those components. Rather than going ahead with the task, I cancelled. (This was before adding the various kernel modules to the system.) My Second question: If I remove every lirc piece through YAST, and then download, compile, and install the latest lirc, will the installed components on my system that are dependent on lirc break? Or will they 'see' the new llirc just fine? I'm nearly ready to give up, reformat, and try again from scratch, but I'm hoping to avoid that. [opensuse] Panel pop-ups

I asked this before and was told that it only is possible on 10.3. So, i ditched SLED and installed 10.3 and now i would like to have "panel pop-ups". In other words, when you have something minimized on the panel/taskbar and you hover your mouse over it, a pop-up of that app shows. [opensuse] Kernel Driver issue using rmmod and modprobe

I am attempting to install a driver for my Logitech 9000. The supplied driver with 10.3 is uvcvideo-kmp-default-r117_2.6.22.5_31-2 However, the developers have released 158 although that is a beta. I would like to try out the beta. I removed the rpm for the SUSE released driver. When I compile up the one that I get from svn://svn.berlios.de/linux-uvc/linux-uvc/trun which requires that the svn command be installed on ones system I then put the driver in /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/media/video/usbvideo/ The name of the driver is uvcvideo.ko However, when I envoke the modprobe uvcvideo # command I get back. [opensuse] Desktop Switching

I work with a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor connected to both an XP-Pro machine and my SuSE 10.3 machine using a KVM switch. The Windows machine uses a desktop manager called VirtuaWin (from SourceForge) to navigate among a set of desktops using the Windows key in combination with up, down, left, and right arrow keys. With KDE on the Linux box, keyboard navigation is not nearly so convenient. Since one _can_ navigate using the keyboard in KDE, it occurred to me that there might be a configuration file somewhere telling it what keypresses to interpret for that purpose. And thus, I might be able to reconfigure it so that navigation is possible using the same keystrokes that I use to navigate among desktops on the Windows box. That would make me very happy. :-) Does anyone have a clue where I could look for that? [opensuse] USB storage not automounting with "VMBlock warning: DentryOpRevalidate..." kernel msgs

Recently my 2.6.22.13-0.3-default SUSE kernel has stopped automatically mounting my USB disks and thumbdrives under /media. The strange thing is that this worked just fine up till recently and occasionally still works again after a reboot. All the plugged-in USB devices appear to be visible to the kernel (see 'lsusb' and 'fdisk -l' output below), but they simply won't mount every time on boot or when I hotplug them. However, I _can_ mount them manually without an issue. Also, I've made no changes to /etc/fstab for ages that might account for this. I've seen some Google references to wrong permissions on USB devices that might generate this warning, but none of them sound quite right to me here.
