[opensuse] PCTEL 2304WT v.92 MDC Modem on Dell Laptop

The sticker on the bottom says Latitude C510/C610, but in messing with this thing (not mine, bought used by its current clueless owner) I've also seen indications this might be a C640. It was given to me to "fix" the modem under W2K, when his original problem was a screwed up ISP with non-working phone numbers. He deleted files for inexplicable reasons only he understands in typical clueless fashion, causing the modem to be driverless. I tried for a while to figure out how to install a good driver, but without success, as it seemed the system was overwhelmed with junkware. So I decided to start clean by repartitioning dual boot. First I installed XP using a Dell OEM CD. That install went nicely, except if failed to find a modem driver. I tried the driver on the M$ updates site, but that didn't work. Then I used the Dell service tag number to find one, and it gave me a selection of different modem possibilities. I tried one or two of those without success, so proceeded to install 10.0 from the boxed DVD I bought. 10.0 install went nicely, and when done, the modem worked. So I tried again with XP, and managed to find a driver that does work. Then I decided he should have the latest SUSE, and did a clean HTTP install of 10.2. Now it has no modem under SUSE. :-( lspci says the following about it: 00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [Generic]) Subsystem: PCTel Inc Dell Inspiron 2100 internal modem Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 5 I/O ports at d400 [disabled] [size=256] I/O ports at dc00 [disabled] [size=128] Why wasn't 10.2 smart enough to install a working modem driver? Is this a proprietary software thing, a driver included on the boxed 10.0 DVD, omitted from the free editions? Can this be easily fixed after adding the packman & guru sources? [opensuse] Problems with patterns

IMHO, the patterns software management feature is far from satisfactory. I tried it out on a recent 10.2 install, and then when I went back and tried to customize my installation (adding and deleting rpms), I ran into strange dependency problems. For example, I invoked the 'Games' pattern but, wanting to have only a few things such as pyson and ksudoku, I removed the various board and arcade games from the pattern listings. When I hit 'accept', the dependencies put the other stuff back in again. I ended up deleting the 'Games' pattern which, fortunately, allowed the things I didn't want to be deleted and the ones I wanted to be kept. In other situations, deleting a pattern also removed some files I wanted to keep -- and the worst part was that it did not tell me in advance! I have little/no need for the enterprise volume system, but I am not allowed to remove the rpm unless I also delete the 'Base' pattern, in which case I don't know what havoc will be created. The patterns feature ties up things much too tightly, well beyond the actual dependency relationships, and removes choice/freedom from Linux. It is better to use 'groups' if you want control tailored to your needs. The absence of the import/export capability that was in 10.0 is also a major problem. It can take hours (per machine) to manually adjust an installation to one's interests and space limitations, or to do a reinstall of that configuration. A 'critical' bugzilla has been up since 10.1, with no evident action. My trials to install WordPerfect 8 for Linux (from 1999) in OpenSuse 10.2 did not succeed up to now. Is it possible to start the machine with Knoppix 3.2 and than install WP in the map I intended? [opensuse] Tux Magazine - Bad News

I've been reading and learning from Tux Magazine since they started releasing it. At first it was a free download then they were to turn to a paid subscription. Finding it valuable - as it contained much information for us ordinary users - I paid. Too bad, they didn't get enough subscribers. First, I would like to thank you for supporting TUX Magazine. Those that elected to buy a subscription proved to us that TUX was needed. Unfortunately, the subscription revenue we have received was insufficient to even maintain TUX at its current level, much less improve it in all the ways we had planned. Offering you less, to me, is only doing half the job and you deserve more.
