NIS /home problem

I have a home setup consisting of an AMD server and a client which had it's own /home partition. I want to serve /home via nfs from the server and mount it on /home on the client but yast doesn't let me. I've tried editing out the /home entry in /etc/fstab but then the client won't boot and takes me into repair mode whereupon I replace the /etc/fstab line and all is well again. Must I delete the /home partition on the client to procede with what I want to do? Are there any simple alternatives? Steve.

Does anyone know if it's possible to add black borders (as in letterbox borders) to an avi file without having to reencode the whole thing?

Firefox extensions lost

Dear all I have looked through the archives from November 2005 and cannot see this question. I would be grateful for any help to correct the problem. I cannot now use any of the extensions to Firefox 1.5.0.1 I was happily using until a week ago. I did have a power cut which might have caused a problem. It would appear from the error message that I have deleted a file and wonder if it is on my installation disc somewhere. I have 5 discs from the Linux Format Special edition of SuSE 10.0. kppp cannot find /dev/modem

Hi, I recently installed 10.1 I use a modem to connect to the internet, and I configured the modem using yast. I use kppp to dial-up. However, after rebooting, I always get the error "kppp cannot find /dev/modem" To rectify this, I launch Yast, use Network Devices | Modem | Edit | Next | Next | Next | Finish. I change nothing. Then I go to Kppp again, and it dials and connects fine! What is going on? John

New system -- 10.0 or 10.1?

I'm about to install a Linux system on a new box. I have the SuSE DVD for 10.0 and I assume I can download the one for 10.1, possibly minus some proprietary stuff (where can I find that if I want it?) Looking at posts here, it appears that people are having more problems with 10.1 than with 10.0; it looks like 10.1 has introduced a number of changes that broke things that were working in 10.0. So which one should I install? Linux releases seem to be like wine vintages; different vintages of the same product can vary greatly in quality, and newer isn't necessarily better. Paul

OT: key 0115 on my laptops keyboard interferes with USB link

Sorry if this is Offtopic but I have done some research on this problem (if my interpretation of the symptoms is correct) but couldn´t find any hint in the internet, therefore no idea how to proceed. Since recent the keyboard of my laptop shows some weird behaviour. Right after switching on the boot process (loading the bios) will only continue if I press a key on the keyboard. Any will do. After that Suse 10.1 boots fine while with XP they keyboard is just dead. I suppose the keys are dirty and need some cleaning The interesting thing is now that in the log of some program connecting via USB to an external handheld CAS a line shows up which isn´t in the program code (the developer tells me so). It says: ticalcs-INFO: sending key 0115: It could very well the one keyboard key which causes this whole bunch of problems. Any ideas or infos on this? Thanks! Guido

How to address this USB port?

My serial port USB cable is still not in use because I have not found a way to address anything connected with this cable. Right now I have the serial connector from my camera connected to this USB cable. I am running both 10.1 and 9.3 fully up to date. The camera should be recognized if used on a normal serial port but via the USB port it does not work. The cable is recognized as /dev/sde1 and can be found in the fstab. Mounting results in following: # mount /media/imation mount: /dev/sde1 is not a valid block device In my fstab it says for this device: /dev/sde1 /media/imation vfat rw,noauto,users lsusb tells me following: # lsusb Bus 001 Device 006: ID 15ca:00c3 Bus 001 Device 005: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. Hi, I'm looking at the implementation of a 'secure' page from my website and have followed the hints in the SuSE 10 reference pdf to use certificate.sh to get some keys generated. Great if you want the certification authority to be 'snake oils'!! Can anyone point me towards a step-by-step guide to generating (from scratch, without certificate.sh) my own set of certificates, including the CA, so that, at least, I have some consistency?
