The recent discussion of zmd/zypp, which I hadn't previously known about, leads me to ask this question: what updating tools are available and how do they compare? I know of zmd/zypp, smart, apt-get, and the Yast online updater, but I only have experience with YOU. I imagine others might be asking the same question. Paul

Network Watcher in KDE

Can anybody tell me where to find a Network Watcher applet in KDE? I don't exactly remember which distro had something like that ..but yeah..WindowMaker has it.. What I mean by Network watcher is an applet that will keep track of the Upload and Download thats currently going on... It should be like an indicator which shows these things... Any ideas on how to get this thing on KDE? Also, is there an applet that shows if the Network Card is connected or disconnected..like the one we get in Windows? 10.1 ROCKS...now...

Evening! You may remember me from a month or so ago, on a modem, and having spent literally hundreds of hours attempting to get 10.1 going. I reverted to 9.3, and have been lurking here until what seemed like good news a couple days ago... So I did a dvd upgrade on one of my networked computers, from 9.3 to 10.1. I usually do a clean install, but well...I was lazy and not too expectant of sucess anyway. Everything went quite smoothly, except I didn't get an option to register. I then did a software search, and noticed the "Online Update Front End" for YAST, and installed that. Since it didn't take me to Novell for the registration and initial update server lists, I manually entered the Oregon State U as an install source. After about an hour of Catalog Download, it showed me the two available infamous Z-lib and an online update upgrade. Those took about 20 minutes, then on the next go-round, I had EVERYTHING listed. Lo and Behold! It ran through all of them as Delta's, at about 12 Meg, I believe. Long for a modem, but what a pleasure to not see 400Meg in the list!!!!! BRAVO to SuSE! Great job straightening out the initial stumble. At least NOW it feels like the old YOU! Thank you, each and all of you! Tom in NM

Rogue screensaver

I'm running KDE under SuSE 10.0. I set the Pipes screensaver to activate after 30 minutes via the KDE control panel. But instead, some other screensaver comes up after perhaps 5 minutes. I haven't yet found who's activating that one. Any pointers? Paul

[opensuse] USB printer concerns

I have been trying to get my printer to work for some time now. I run an AMD64 with opensuse 10.1 and an Cannon LBP1120. I have loaded all the latest cannon software CUPS 1,2,4 I have lp usblp usbcore.c loaded (my usb scanner, keyboard and Key work) but the printer does not. Zmd/Zypp Zowie!

The last upgrade to Zmd Zypp and friends really seems to have made dramatic improvements! I've been keeping KDE up to date with the KDE repositories at http://software.opensuse.org/download/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.… There were 87 odd updates available this evening. The entire process took 50 minutes. (Its not a fast machine). This has NEVER finished in less than 4 hours in the past, due to LOOOOOONG pauses between individual patches. So this means the whole zmd rug zypp thingie is finally ACTUALLY USABLE, and my 10.1 finally seems to update as fast as 9.3.
