Questions: 1. What is a mail header, I used Outlook's help and it does not refer to headers, the term header they use has nothing to do with what mail headers in our world mean. ~~ In Outlook, right click on the SLE message, and select Options. There you will see the headers. Scroll down to read the full content or highlight the content by right-clicking on it, us cntl-c to copy, paste the content into an editor and read it from there. ~James

kernel panic suse 9.2

Hello, upon returning from vacation my desktop refuses to boot. The last two messages are: kernel_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 472128714 kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,18) I assume this may be the result of an earlier YOU. Would anyone have a suggestion how to get my system alive again? Thanks, Ruud

Been following this forum and was leary of going to 10.1, but just couldn't resist anymore...upgrade wasn't smooth, ended up doing a clean install, and for the most part everything is much better than I had feared. Couple of questions, first re usb-stick. KDE lets me open them from "my computer". But I usually am in fvwm2, and so far have not found where the heck the kernel is putting it. Nothing in /media as in the past (9.3). Second question and comment: The installer tests the internet (gets release notes etc.) and drops the connection. The next task is the online registration, right? But there is no "reconnect" button, and I don't use "connect on demand". The installer should hold the connection for the next step. Now, when I try to register and activate the updater, a browser opens, I enter my novell user/pw, I enter the code, and nothing else happens. If I close the browser and choose next, I loop back to the browser again, with the same procedure of entering my activation code. The only way to break the loop was to say "register later". From all the other horror stories re the updater, I don't recall one like this. BTW, I did get an email saying I registered the 10.1. Any hints? Thanks! Tom

mkisofs question

Hello all: I am backing up my stuff onto DVD and for this I want to create ISO images. I ran this mkisofs command in the directory I want to back up: mkisofs -o ../bakup.iso -iso-level 1 -J -joliet-long -R -r ./ mkisofs gave an error messages that some joliet file names are the same and quit. As some of the file names are longer than 101 characters and only differ in the last 1-3 characters it seems possible that the 'joliet-part' of the names are the same. Here is an axample of top-posting. So sue me :) The fact is that we should be pleased this list attracts people who don't know the correct etiquette. IT MEANS (please forgive my shouting) NON-SAVVY PEOPLE ARE USING (trying to use) SuSE! This has been said many times before. Sure we need a protocol. Someone ought to write one and post it wherever people sign up for this list. Then it would be easy to refer a hijacker or otherwise uneducated beginner to that well written and politely encouraging post. I think it is important to help newbies rather than repel them. If you (oldies) want to depend on SuSE indefinitely it must grow in popularity. Things never stay the same. SuSE's popularity can either grow or shrink. If it shrinks I have to switch my allegiance to another distro which I can rely on to retain critical mass and continue indefinitely. Mail rage is repulsive. Mike Dana J. What you are looking for is a tool like apt or smart where refreshing the repository metadata and performing the actual update are really separate steps that have to be invoked separately. And that is exactly my proposal, have a look at one of these tools or maybe even both. What you are trying to do will be very clumsy with YaST because YaST refreshes the repository metadata automatically when the online_update module is invoked. > BTW, I don't have 'createrepo' on my system.
