Mouse-madness

Hi all, I have SUSE 10.0 installed. It has been running the last 6 months without a problem. Suddenly my PS/2 mouse (Logitech) behaves strangely. The scroll-wheel is activated when moving the mouse sideways. Clicking does not respond immediately. Moving over programmes or windows in the taskbar opens them, etc. I tried a usb Logitech as well, even a M$ PS/2. All behave the same. Using Yast (SaX2) does not improve anything. When SaX2 ends with the Test or Save options, it complains of an error in line 103 or 96 (each time the "EndSection" of a "mouse" Driver section). Only a cancel works. It writes to /var/lib/sax/xorg.conf, but no change seems to take place in mouse behaviour. The strange thing is that there are no real choices for Logitech standard usb or PS/2 mice in YaST2. If you use yast in the clp, there are other options altogether. Strange? Problem with a lp0 printer

Hi, I've installed SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 with a HP Laserjet 6L printer. Yast2 detects and configures this printer without problemes. I can print a test page and even print from every applications. When I restart computer I can not print any more. Cups is running and accepting jobs, but printer seems to be disconnected (and that is not true) http://localhost:631/printers ... "The printers is not connected" If I reinstall the printer it works again. I have no found error in log files. comparing text files that lack line breaks (SuSE 10.0)

This is necessitated due to brain dead windoz software and a hard disk failure. I had saved an original file before working on the copy. The app refused to work with my copy, claiming a difference in format, even though I changed only one byte (a 0x34 "4" to a 0x30 "0"), and file file sizes are identical. Then the HD grew new bad sectors, and the original simply disappeared, and no undelete utils I could find could locate it to undelete it. So now I need to figure out from similar files and the copy what the format difference(s) is/are, but diff doesn't seem to care for files that lack line breaks. apropos didn't seem any help. I asked on IRC, where fold and ediff were suggested. ediff seemed the better choice, but bash couldn't find it. YaST claimed that patchutils provides ediff, so I directed YaST to install it. It claims to have done so, and an rpm query confirms it, but bash still can't find it, even running as root. faster hd with hdparm

I guess i have made all i can to increase my hard drive speed. It is an ata-100 HD but all i've got is 34.32 MB/sec (hdparm -Tt). Is there something I'm forgetting? Tooltips in GTK apps

This is not suse-specific, but something that's really annoying me, and maybe some others here. I run KDE, but I often use Firefox and Thunderbird. Does anyone know any way to turn off tooltips for these? I've not found anything in the apps themselves or in gnome-control-center. The biggest problem is Thunderbird, which will raise a tooltip if you leave the cursor in the subject/from/etc list. If I then switch desktops (which I do from the keyboard), the tooltip will remain on the screen for some time, even though I'm on a new desktop, which is rather ugly.

Hi All, Just installed suse 10.1. Obviously the new patch software doesn't work. I would like to know if there are instructions posted somewhere as to how to fix the update problem. I do not want to use smart. Thank you, Phil

Gutenprint revisited

To all interested parties, I recently sent an email to the list asking if anyone had used or if there was a SUSE rpm for the new Gutenprint due to replace the gimp-print we now use with CUPS. I don't recall seeing any replies, so this past weekend I decided to create a proper rpm and test. I'm happy to report success on both! I can honestly say, using the new printer drivers, I managed to actually get good printouts from Gimp for the very first time! The printer control is exceptional for the supported models and it appears even the text output is improved. I've tested in several programs, from text editors up and all have been improved. I recommend all here that does printing of any type take the time to install this and use it! Backup To CD.

Hi again, I need some kind of backup utility that backs up a file to CD - R. The file is about 5MB so I should be able to use the CD a couple of times. It will need to be a command line program because it will be called from another program (it should copy the file to cd and return the status of the command). Problem with mounting fat on 10.1

Hi list! I have a problem I never had before. I mount a fat32 partition and all permissions are as expected, except one subfolder (only this). How can this be?? I can read but not write in this wolder!
