Could you wake up the list owner and have the address below removed?? Many of us have written to suse-linux-e-owner over the past *several* weeks to have this done but there doesn't seem to be anyone at the helm.... Good day, Just wondered what peple would consider the best deal up to about $150? I don't any of the 30GB models. Size I'd say up to 10GB would suffice for ym needs. Many thanks, Matt PS Using 92, will be 10.1 once Amazon ship it.

Observation from reading diffrent threads...

Is seems to me, reading from a lot of the new installations made on this list. The main problem ppl very often crash into is the graphics department. Not getting the right resolution, image of center, not being able to set LCD's etc. And it most often boils down to a bad xorg.conf being created by Sax. Lots of the solutions are "Hand hack this", "Run with these and that debug/switch", "copy old config to new" and so on. My question/ observation is; Is this really how a professional utility should work? You need quite a bit of expertise to fix the graphics setup. Especially with the newer cards. Its not the clearest and easiest for newcomers to fix a graphical problem. And most of the time as all they want to get is the new and shiny desktop. Alot of ppl dont care whats under the hood. (And doesnt understand) Time to take a closer look as to WHY Sax cant set things up w/o screwing it self? Not saying that Sax is a total piece of.. Its a fairly nice piece of software. It just doesnt reach the high SuSE standard we expect to see. Mounting usb zip250

Am I the only one having problems with mounting a usb zip drive ? Trying to mount a usb zip drive on a 10.1 install. The drive shows up in Konqueror>media:/sde But if I try to open it I get this popup message Method "Mount" with signature "ssas" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" doesn't exist My external usb hard drive mounts as media:/sde but with the zip connected instead lshal does not show an sde I have 2 of these drives and they both fail to get mounted so it's not the drive. Clues please Dave

It's your system, your time & effort and, eventually your how-to :-) so obviously the decision here is your's. The only other items I saw that raised a flag were these (==) default settings (Note... "TrueColor is 24-bit vs. a 'DefaultDepth' set to 16-bit): (==) NVIDIA(0): RGB weight 565 (==) NVIDIA(0): Default visual is TrueColor (==) NVIDIA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0) compared to these settings from xorg.conf: Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 16 SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "640x480" EndSubSection Device "Device[0]" Identifier "Screen[0]" Monitor "Monitor[0]" EndSection I wouldn't start hacking xorg.conf again. At this point, with the card correctly detected and initialized and with no errors from loading the module, I'd see if SaX2 (with only one display connected... probably your monitor and not the TV)... can sort out the necessary settings on it's own. Looking at 'man SaX2' I see these possibilities: sax2 -r (reinit the hw db/detection and try again) sax2 -a (attempt autoconfigure) sax2 -m 0=nvidia (try SaX2's GUI again, specifying the module) I'm sure you and others will have some good ideas about how to proceed, as well. regards, Carl

10.1: Extreme slow startup of acroread

Hello Since upgrading my system (1.8GHz P4 with 512MB RAM and Ultra 160 SCSI drives), the startup time of some programs (most particularly, acrobat reader) have gotten REALLY long. For instance, it takes a minute and 4 seconds for the acroread window to appear on the display after typing "/usr/bin/acroread" at a shell prompt. $ time acroread real 1m4.604s user 1m1.764s sys 0m1.144s When I was running 10.0 I never measured the startup time because it was very quick, but I would estimate it used to take 5 seconds max to start up. I thought I might have a bad LD_LIBRARY_PATH, but it is not set in either my or root's environment. There was some cruft in /etc/ld.so.conf, but I removed that and it didn't make any difference. When I look at the detailed tracelog I can see that the vast majority of open calls result in ENOENT (no such file or directory) or EACCES (Permission denied). Most are ENOENT though, because it seems to be looking for stuff where it isn't... thousands and thousands of times. I can even see instances where it did a STAT on the file and the STAT failed, then it immediately tried to open the file in the same location, which naturally failed too. I thought it might have something to do with my environment as a particular user, so I tried it as root (same problem) and even created a brand new virgin user and that account sees the same problem. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot and fix this? Oh, I also tried removing the SuSE-supplied acrobat rpm and replacing it with the one from the Adobe site... no improvement. [somewhat OT] S-Video out

Hi guys, I have an S-Video out port on my notebook (at least I think that's what it is). I know nothing about this technology, so this might be a very stupid question: Can I connect the S-Video-out to the AV-in on my VCR? I don't have S-Video on the VCR. I have search high and low but cannot find a cable like this, and the shop assistents don't seem to know much. If so, does YaST set up, or do I need to do some hacking? This is on a notebook with ATi x300 graphics, using the fglrx driver (32bit). Thanks Hans

packagemanagement in 10.1

Hi, I'm a bit confused about the packagemanagement in 10.1. AFAIK there is yast, smart and apt. smart shall be the successor of apt, which will (AFAIK) be supported last time with 10.1 What about smart? Is smart the upcoming tool in 10.x or is it yast (with this migrated software for software management where I read something somewhere about?) Can someone clarify that or tell me a link, where I can read something about that? Thanks in advance Andreas (who switched from apt to smart with his 10.0 and is now wondering where to switch again!)

Hadn't thought of checking certificates but I never provided one before. Interesting, will have to look into that. As far as the check box for Secure Authentication, yes. I knew that it was required. Before moving to Linux, I had to use Outlook and then I found a product called Incredimail that has also gotten past the Secure Authentication road block to MSN mail. Still looking for ideas on this. I am contemplating installing the full Mozilla 1.7.13 suite on SuSE 10.1 from the Mozilla source, see if that works. Anyone done that successfully (installing the suite and/or using it with MSN on SuSE 10.x)? Clint
