[opensuse] md raid fails after installation

greetz (here is another question that relates to the same box of which ive enquired allready earlier in other posts) I just installed the minimal installation on the ide drives using raid md i created three partitions on both disks and created raid on them + the file system, (same process as what i have done on other systems flawlessly) raid1 md0 1gb /boot raid1 md1 20gb / raid1 md2 2gb SWAP raid5 md3 460gb /data now after the installation is done and peforms its first boot, on boot the system says "no operating system found" i installed the same base system without md raid on the first disk with the same partitions, and i didnt face any boot problems the hardware amd 3500 1gb ram msi k8n diamond ide mactor 60gb 6l060j3 ide maxtor 60gb 96147u8 sata 4x maxtor 160gb 6l160m0 any ideas of what is goin wrong? -- Regards -RP- ___________________________ If computers were made in heaven, would they be perfect? ___________________________

File permissions restore?

Is there a quick and easy way to restore all file permissions in /etc and underlying directories? A friend of mine did a recursive chmod 644 on /etc, and of course the system is totally screwed up now.. It's a 10.1 installation. -- Anders Norrbring Norrbring Consulting

[opensuse] removing fake raid

just to elaborate more on my previous post, i get the following warning on installation: warning: this system has at least one hard disk with a raid configuration presented by the bios as raid that is in fact a software raid. the following disks were detected as part of such a raid: /dev/hda /dev/sda /dev/sdc the linux kernel 2.4 supported some of these systems (like promise fastrack and highpoint rocketraid). but the linux kernel 2.6 does not support them at all. if you install onto these disks, your raid configuration and any data on the raid will be lost- refer to http://portal.suse.com to learn how to migrate to a linux software raid. the thing is that, ive got 6 drives plugged in, 2 ide and 4 sata on an msi k8n diamond. some of these drives were in use in various scenarios of which one was on an asus k7v880 mobo running on via raid with windows. now i used knoppix and used fdisk to repartition the disks just to make sure, but still on boot i get that warning, how can i resolve or fix that? -- Regards -RP- ___________________________ If computers were made in heaven, would they be perfect? ___________________________

[opensuse] Split the packages

Hey, in Solaris, many packages are split in two (e.g. SUNWzebrar and SUNWzebrau, just to pick a random one), of which one (the 'u' one) contains data that can be shared over NFS. This is an interesting concept because it allows a smaller install image for diskless and diskful clients and potentially chroots. no sound

Hello again-- Altho I am pretty sure I had sound when I had 10.0 on this machine, I now have 9.3, and no sound comes out. I first found that Skype was not outputting anything, then I tried a music CD. All the titles display as they should, but not a peep out of the speakers. I have checked the mixer settings, and everything is turned up, there is no mute bar thru the speaker in the bottom tool bar, or whatever it's called. I even tried other speakers. Running KDE. What do I do next? --doug

Antivir on 10.1

[opensuse] how can I remove software raid "tag" from a disk

greetings i threw in a number of disks to create a raid5 volume and one of the disks used to be in a system that was running windows using the via raid feature. now when i attempt to install opensuse 10.1 it warns me of it, yet it doesnt show me how i could remove that makring from the disk to use it normally. i might be missing something here as this is a bit too simple yet little known :) -- Regards -RP- ___________________________ If computers were made in heaven, would they be perfect? ___________________________

Login manager changed after updates

I have two SuSE 10.1 machines here and after doing updates recently on both of them, now both login managers have changed. The backgrounds are gone and the user list is no longer embedded in the screen, instead is now in a box center screen with the user name and password fields, black surrounds the box. Also, I've noticed my remote administration does not work, just hangs trying to connect via VNC. I can go to the terminal and type 'vncserver', which created a session on :2 and then use that with no problem. Can someone tell me what these updates may have done and how to fix them? I have several configured catalogs in the software updater. Thanks in advance, -- Robert

Problem with printing

Hi all I am having this very strange problem I am using SuSE10 with KDE as my desktop . We have a network printer(Xerox Phaser 5500DN PS) and i have configured the printer as my default printer. Its prints just fine except that i cant turn on the Duplex printing option available . I had printed documents with this option before but suddenly i am not getting this duplex printing option at all Can anybody please help, Thanks in advance Regards Arnab
