fam eating ressources

Hi all, i've encountered following problem: sometimes fam (file allocation monitor) is eating massively ressources, so if i want to start a new programm, per example konqueror, i can hear (and see by the led-flashing) massive action from my harddisc, but the program doesnt come up. Then i look with top to see that fam is consuming 97% of my cpu-time. If i kill fam then, the formerly startet program is coming up quickly. I've tried to wait nearly 30 minutes, because maybe its some important thing fam has to do, but it seems to be only a burn-in-test for CPU and HD. After killing fam in most cases mono is the next candidate and wants to eat all the ressources, so i have to kill it too. If i understand it in the right way, mono is normally used as a runtime-module like the .NET-Framework running always in Windows? So for what do i need the mono-runtime, if i wouldnt use mono-written programs? Could these two problems approved by other SUSE 10-Users? regards, Jens

Naming issues

Slightly different from the capitalization issues thread. Also see the recent thread I started on the SuSE Wikipedia article. I note that a lot of people have started calling the software itself as openSUSE 10 (with a lot of errors in capitalization). Maybe this popular name shift - calling the product of the openSUSE project as openSUSE itself (no doubt influenced by remembering that when Fedora went separate, it carried the name of the project) - is unavoidable, like GNU/Linux. I mean, no matter how much Stallman says "You've *gotta* call it GNU/Linux else you're not attributing credit where it's due, people are *not* going to call it GNU/Linux because: a. Linux is a short nice two-syllable name, like M$'s O$'s name. b. They are used to identifying this particular name with the OS. So if people get used to identifying the new software as openSUSE, we're lost. And thought I know that the project name is capitalized as openSUSE, how is the name of the 9.3 and 10 software capitalized? As SUSE LINUX 9.3 and SUSE LINUX 10 or SuSE Linux 9.3 and SuSE Linux 10? -- Shriramana Sharma http://samvit.org

cron.daily run time creep

OS: SuSE 9.3 Pro I found my cron.daily files were running at all sorts of times of day in 9.3 (several systems) and finally found a message posted earlier this year that told how to fix it by removing the /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.daily file at the time you wanted it to run - one minute. I set mine to run at 4:00 AM (0800 UTC) and it did so the first day but then ran at 0415 the second day, 0430 the third, etc. What causes this creep? Am I going to have to run a cron.weekly job to reset cron.daily? Thank you, Lucky Leavell

Orinoco Issues in 9.3

I have just installed 9.3 on my laptop and can not get an Orinoco card to work. I am using YaST and it does not seem to connect to my network. I have double checked and my WEP key is correct and so is the essid. When I use my cisco card it works just fine. 9.2 evolution import problem

I just did a clean install of 9.2 on the older box. One users email imported cleanly into the new evolution. The other did not and locked up. Assuming it was corrupt I removed the dot Evolution directory for that user having prudently saved the data of the old folders. [SUSE-Beta1] what I don't like so far

Hello I like SUSE (I am being more careful how I spell it now) so I downloaded the 4 Beta 1 CDs last night and installed them today on my home computer (a Tyan S2664 smp) and my Thinkpad T-40. The following is a list of what I don't like so far. Please note that these aren't complaints - only my attempt to lend a helping hand so that OpenSUSE improves as fast as possible. - I figure that as these problems occur on my two computers that I am probably not the only one.. Here I go ########## # 1 ########## Hotplugging doesn't work When I plug in my USB key it doesn't automatically show up in konquorer I can see my USB key icon under My Computer (media:/) but when I double click on it the key is empty! Note: I can mount it manually via the command line but that is a pain ... Note: When I select the usb icon and do a right click and select properties I see the key as sda1 but no size is indicated... I can't sell Linux at the office with a problem like this... ########## # 2 ########## I like the new look but I run SaX2 but I can't find XFine2 when I run SaX2 any more. This is a bit of "show stopper" on my home computer because on my 17inch Sony LCD screen isn't correctly centered (Right/Left) The bottom line is that I can't use the "K menu" button by clicking on it because I can't see / find it. All comments welcome. ########## #3 ########## Sound doesn't work (even after playing with the volume sliders... My sound card on the home computer (Tyan S2664) is SB LIVE 5.1 - very basic. SUSE Beta V1 lists the card as Model SB0100. ########## #4 ########## I can't add keyboard short cuts via kmenuedit I usually launch konqueror via Ctrl-K ########## #5 ########## I can't filter documents via the konquorer "Location" tool bar For example: I normally enter /Doc/*txt into the konquorer "Location" tool bar in order to list only "text" documents in the /Doc directory When I do this in the Beta 1 verion however I get a message saying that "The file or folder file:///Doc/*txt does not exist" which is totally false #################### On another note: #################### I installed Java (jdk-1.5.0_04-fcs) and got the java working fine for Firefox and Tomcat 5.5.9 but I don't know how to set a custom java installation so that it works correctly in Konqueror Anyone have any ideas? jpearson@linux:/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_04> java -version java version "1.5.0_04" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_04-b05) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_04-b05, mixed mode, sharing) I tried using "/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_04/bin/java" in Konqueror but it doesn't work I also installed OO v1.9.122 and it works fine but as it always does. conflict in SuSE's 9.3 apt depository for gnome

When I try to install certain gnome packages in 9.3 with apt, I get the following message (between two packages provided in that depository): file /opt/gnome/share/themes/Clearlooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc from install of gnome-themes-2.11.91-3 conflicts with file from package gtk2-engines-2.6.4-5 mikus

eth0 interface problem

Hi! Beta1 Network setup, DHCP Check Alt+F2 console, eth0 and lo interface OK 192.168.0.101 127.0.0.1 The YoU check internet connection, OK. Found 2 upgrade package. After the forst login, until installation, eth0 not accept DHCP information, but lo interface is OK. After System Restart, or rcnetwork restart, eth0 ok. ??? -- sAGA
