[SUSE-Beta1] what I don't like so far
Hello I like SUSE (I am being more careful how I spell it now) so I downloaded the 4 Beta 1 CDs last night and installed them today on my home computer (a Tyan S2664 smp) and my Thinkpad T-40. The following is a list of what I don't like so far. Please note that these aren't complaints - only my attempt to lend a helping hand so that OpenSUSE improves as fast as possible. - I figure that as these problems occur on my two computers that I am probably not the only one.. Here I go ########## # 1 ########## Hotplugging doesn't work When I plug in my USB key it doesn't automatically show up in konquorer I can see my USB key icon under My Computer (media:/) but when I double click on it the key is empty! Note: I can mount it manually via the command line but that is a pain ... Note: When I select the usb icon and do a right click and select properties I see the key as sda1 but no size is indicated... I can't sell Linux at the office with a problem like this... ########## # 2 ########## I like the new look but I run SaX2 but I can't find XFine2 when I run SaX2 any more. This is a bit of "show stopper" on my home computer because on my 17inch Sony LCD screen isn't correctly centered (Right/Left) The bottom line is that I can't use the "K menu" button by clicking on it because I can't see / find it. All comments welcome. ########## #3 ########## Sound doesn't work (even after playing with the volume sliders... My sound card on the home computer (Tyan S2664) is SB LIVE 5.1 - very basic. SUSE Beta V1 lists the card as Model SB0100. ########## #4 ########## I can't add keyboard short cuts via kmenuedit I usually launch konqueror via Ctrl-K ########## #5 ########## I can't filter documents via the konquorer "Location" tool bar For example: I normally enter /Doc/*txt into the konquorer "Location" tool bar in order to list only "text" documents in the /Doc directory When I do this in the Beta 1 verion however I get a message saying that "The file or folder file:///Doc/*txt does not exist" which is totally false #################### On another note: #################### I installed Java (jdk-1.5.0_04-fcs) and got the java working fine for Firefox and Tomcat 5.5.9 but I don't know how to set a custom java installation so that it works correctly in Konqueror Anyone have any ideas? jpearson@linux:/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_04> java -version java version "1.5.0_04" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_04-b05) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_04-b05, mixed mode, sharing) I tried using "/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_04/bin/java" in Konqueror but it doesn't work I also installed OO v1.9.122 and it works fine but as it always does. All comments welcome. Regards James PEARSON

I am going to answer my own question on how to get java working for konqueror because I just re opened Konqueror and the java was setup and working fine (I checked using one of many test sites : http://javatester.org/version.html) What I did... Under "Path to java executable or java" I was/am using /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_04/bin/java I think my problem was either the fact that I had not applied the changes and/or re opening Konqueror in order that the changes take effet. Cool. Java works fine for Konqueor, Firefox and Tomcat 5.5.9. I just need some pointers on how to fix my sound problems now. Bye James PEARSON

Perhaps Konqueror was preloaded in memory. You may press Control+Esc, then look for Konqueror in the list of processes and kill it. That way Konqueror will have to load everything again. Another way is to open one Konqueror window as usual. Then open another Konqueror window and close the first. That way the second process will have to load everything from scratch (including the plugins) and you then close the preloaded process. -- Víctor Fernández Martínez Gabinete de prensa de PoLinux [www.polinux.upv.es]. I was unable to get my wireless card working (Netgear WG511) under 10.0 beta 1, so after searching the archives and seeing others also unable to get their wireless cards working, I wiped the disk and re-installed 9.3. I'll try beta 2 when it comes out. -- San Francisco, CA

I tried loading the last KOTD a few days ago (kernel 2.6.13-rc6-git1), and gave it a whirl. At first boot, everything seemed fine. I could ping the router, get an IP, and the signal had no problems. I had to turn off encryption in order for the wireless to work. However, I had my laptop lock up on me, and the subsequent reboot killed off the success I had. This bug (at least the part I mentioned in an earlier post about encryption), is documented, and apparently there is some sort of fix coming down the pipe in beta 2 (see the first link for more information). https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=104006 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=104117 The KOTD update was good for stability, but I can't figure out why it wireless would work one minute and then stop following a reboot. I've tried everying (ifup, ifdown, iwconfig), and nothing. I guess wireless is out of the question (or a problem) until Beta2 comes out. -Chris

That's the way I figure it. I expect a .0 beta 1 release to have some warts, but being able to use wireless reliably is critical for me on that machine (my laptop), so I'll just wait for beta 2. Michael -- San Francisco, CA

I've had problems too with my wireless card, but solved them. If you are interested, then describe your specific problem, maybe its the same like mine and maybe i can help you. If not, forget this post. regards, Jens

Thanks Jens, but after having installed 10.0B1 and then reinstalling 9.3 again, I am not interested in trying it again until B2 or after. Michael -- San Francisco, CA
