Screen for root user shows only YaST

>From the time I installed SUSE v9.1 until a few days ago, the root user screen looked more or less like the screen for an ordinary user. There came a day when, upon switching to the root user, I see nothing but YaST, occupying the entire screen. Clssing YaST ends the root-user session, and bounces me back to the preexisting user session. I have no idea what has made this happen, but I would like to understand it. I would also like to fix it, because not everything that root can do can be done through YaST. I have asked this question previously on Usenet, but have not received any useful response. Does anyone recognize this sympton and have a fix for it?

IP Printing issues in KDE

hello all, I am a newbie so please bear with me. I am trying to configure IP printing in the KDE environment. Prior to installing and using SUSE, I worked with the Mepis distribution with 2.6.10 kernel/KDE 3.3. I was able to configure IP printing with relative ease using the Printing manager utility. Now on to Suse 9.3. I started by firing up the printing manager utility and went to add printer. Went through the wizard selecting "Network Printer" option and went ahead and gave the correct IP address of the printer. I then proceeded to select the correct drivers and to finalize I pressed the "test" option. The problem is that the KDE Daemon would ask me to authenticate in which I did but it keeps rejecting my credentials. I tried root and my username and no luck. I tried this sseveral times to eliminate the chance of fat fingering but to no avail. So it won't let me complete the wizard without being authenticated. I tried to configure the CUPS server to allow anonymous but I still get the authorization dialog. You want to burn the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder to the same folder in the k3b DVD structure. Go to new project, then select Video DVD. Make SURE it's VIDEO DVD. Mplayer interaction with powersaved

Mplayer has an irritating habit of somehow disabling the monitor's powersave, so my monitor stays on all the time after an mplayer session. So far, the only solution I've found is to ctrl-alt-backspace to restart X, which seems pretty extreme to me. Does anyone know of any way to either prevent mplayer from screwing up the powersave settings, or to reinstate those settings in a manner less extreme than restarting X? Burning CD -- Help Needed

Hello, Back when I had SuSE 9.1 I had no trouble burning a CD using either cdrecord or K3B. Now I am using 9.3 and can't get it to work. K3B reports "no media" in s pop-up message. The message offers "force" as an option but when I select that it simply ejects the CD. loss of cups printer definition - suse linux pro 9.1 & samba 3.0.9-2.6-suse - small lan

On a working printer & system I needed to change the printer definition on one of two systems each with a printer [samsung laser and hplj4]. Yast2-printer stalled at 50% [loading configuration] and had to be closed. When I tried again the cups daemon died when trying to save the printer definition. I found that /etc/cups/ was empty! Re-installing the printer function in Yast2 did not do any good. Is this a result of the samba lan? or some other interaction of the systems? Has anybody experienced this problem? I am looking for a calculator that, hopefully does not require megabytes o libraries, etc that gives me a virtual tape, base conversions, memory function, a few more features that a 4-banger.
