Hardware issue with SuSE 9.3 Pro

I have several servers that have various Adaptec I2O RAID controllers installed. SuSE 9.3 Pro doesn't detect those controllers, though I should also note that SuSE 9.2 Pro detected them without problem. I've installed SLES 9 on servers using those controllers using the manual install method which worked, though a little cumbersome. I tried that same method with the 9.3 install and could not make it happen. I've tried to use the driver disk using the drivers I downloaded from the Adaptec site, but they were for much earlier releases and that did not work. Does anyone have any idea of how I can perform the install and have it recognize my controllers? Thanks in advance for your time and trouble. infinite loop in /usr/bin/find ?

I have a weird problem and am wondering if anybody has seen it before - find seems to be in an infinite loop. I ran a Perl script, which in turn ran find. The Perl code is this line: open(FIND, "find $destree -ls|") or seppuku 21, "dirvish $vault:$image cannot build index"; The Perl script belongs to a package called dirvish and this job has previously worked fine every night. Here's what I can see on the system. Keypad problem

For some reason I don't understand, the keypad doesn't work for me in 9.3. Not a mechanical problem as it works in win2k and mempis 3.3. It's not a numlock problem either, or so I'm lead to believe, as cycling the numlock key makes no difference. Don't find any help with google, so I thought I'd inquire if anyone else has had this same problem. dave -- David C. Need to know how to install rpm type packages

To ALL: First, I use SuSe 9.2 Pro on its own 20gig disc with a 1.7mhz cpu and 700+megs of ram. I have 3 rpm packages that I have tried to install, to no avail, the error readings show the conflicts and need for different libraries that I do no have on my 9.2! I will now list the 3 packages and ask if anyone can tell me if they are installable on my computer. First, Kmymoney-0.6-1.FC2.i386.rpm; second,mozilla-1.7.8-0.1.i586.rpm and third,mozilla-1.7.8-0.1.i586.rpm. :-[

HOW TO INSTALL KMYMONEY

This is for OldSarge........... Ok, here's what I did to install Kmymoney on 9.3 (should be exactly the same on 9.2) 1) Downloaded the kmymoney....... ......tar.bz2 file from sourceforge.net 2) cd to /usr/local (this is where I install all tar files that I get. 3) Since the filename ends in .bz2 I know that it is a bzip file, and this requires one of the *three* possible options for tar... the 'j' option tar.gz === the 'z' option just .tar == neither 'j' nor 'z' 4) I downloaded the .tar.bz2 file to /ftparea which is where I download everything. So my command to untar is: tar xjvf /ftparea/mymoney2-0.7.2.tar.bz2 5) cd into the newly created /usr/local/kmymoney2-0.7.2 directory 6) Looking around, I see a configure command so I issue it: ./configure It does a lot of checking and completes with the message: Good - your configure finished. Start make now If you got an error message from the ./configure, then you are probably missing something. 7) I then issue the make command. make This compiles a whole bunch of stuff and completes without error. 8) Then I ran: make install which also completed without error. I should now have an installed version of kmymoney on my 9.3 system. 9) But where is it? Since it is a kde program, it is probably in /opt/kde3/bin ls /opt/kde3/bin/kmy* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 2005-06-15 20:07 /opt/kde3/bin/kmymoney -> ./kmymoney2 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5264508 2005-06-15 19:37 /opt/kde3/bin/kmymoney2 Amazing!! I did not find an entry in the kde START set, but there might be one. In any event, I can make an icon for it on the desktop. Now this is *all* it took. No big deal assuming you have all the pieces on your system and that's not hard to do. This is a very stock 9.3 system but I do have a lot of things loaded on it. C compiler for one. And..... if any of the above steps had failed, it would in NO WAY be the fault of SuSE. They didn't write the program, or provide it to me. The TAR command was the easiest part of the whole deal but the above is how you deal with NINETY-FIVE PERCENT of tar files. (my estimate) Enjoy....

partition copy

Hi, I just got a bigger HDD for my laptop. I need to move the existing windows installation over the new drive. Is there a free utility which will allow me to make a partition copy (NTFS) to a network share, and restore from there? I can not plug both drives at the same time, so I need to copy the old one, and then to install the new one. All this is to make a free space for suse. I taught about running knoppix and dd, but I'm not sure that this will work. Thanks Sunny

Ken, I checked the /etc/resolve.conf file. The name server line is set to the new DNS server and the name search line has also been updated to follow the settings I made in YAST. I've not configured a DNS server with LINUX and I'll research doing that to see if it improves the situation. Thanks for your reply. I suspect that it is still pointing to the old server address. Or even better yet, set up a linux box as your DNS server and eliminate problems all around. Thanks to all who helped, turned out the reason I could not get ndiswraper to work was because of the prism54 module, unloaded it and ndiswrapper works and I am wifi :) Sean

DNS issues with 9.1, 9.2 and SLES 9

Background: Previously we had a NT domain with the PDC offering DHCP, DNS and WINS services. Pointing to that server from our LINUX machines worked okay… we were able to resolve internal machine names without much problem. We could ping a host, i.e. PING HOST1 and it would resolve with the IP address and fully qualified host name. Problem: We have added a new PDC on a Windows 2000 server which runs mixed NT/AD mode and offers DHCP and DNS services. Once that was done, my older SuSE boxes (9.1 Pro, 9.2 Pro and SLES 9) are no longer resolving internal host names, though they do resolve external addresses. SuSE 9.3 Pro resolves them just fine. I've checked and rechecked the settings in YAST and all of the machines are configured with the same entries. I've tried to research this problem but haven't found anything that would tell me why the versions are behaving differently. Does anyone have an idea why they are behaving as they are and what I have to do to make them work correctly? Thanks in advance for your help. Requesting still more help on my two installs of 9.3; one at work, the other at home. Not having ANY luck with getting xine or the like to function, I was pointed by a colleague to: http://www.plainfaqs.org/linux/dvdplay/ Now this is one nice site and I highly recommend it to anyone having problems playing video media. I followed the instructions at work and bingo, dvds now PLAY perfectly, but still no sound, so that remains an issue, and one I'd love to solve. At home with an identical install and current updates - granted different box -- the install resulted in two problems. First, running xine gives the following error (the first time I ran xine a very nice configure xine dialog appeared but I can't find how to get it back): - xine engine error - There is no input plugin available to handle 'dvd:/". Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file /stream source doesn't exist. Second, running kaffeine gives the following error: xine Message - Kaffeine Player No plugin found to handle this resource (dvd:/). Seems odd that following the same set of instructions, step by step identically, can give such different results. Any thoughts on this problem are welcome. thanks, dave -- David C.
