timidity question

Just installed timidity to play some old midi files I had laying around. It mostly works but many of the files result in messages like these: No instrument mapped to drum set 0, program 57 - this instrument will not be heard No instrument mapped to drum set 0, program 84 - this instrument will not be heard Is there some way to fix this?

9.3 - problem after hard disk change for backup

Hello list, I just changed to the backup media hard disk. Two identical discs with one partition do the job. That works so far but every time I change the disk (its a hotplug hard disk) the system fails to mount or check the filesystem. It seems that somehow the system sees another disk id and then just doesn't doesn't want to mount anymore. So far I could solve the problem with writing the partition table again of the new disk with fdisk as rebooting is not an option. Seems that this triggers to set the device (/dev/sdc1 in my case) correctly again. As the backup script should run without any interaction this is far from a solution. How can I force that the device is set correctly again after a hard disk change. I am not very familiar with the whole hotplug system of linux so any hint would be really appreciated. Thanks Ulf

Backup compare

I asked this on another suse list some time ago... didn't like the response. ;) What are most of you folks running to stream to tape? I'm looking to replace Retrospect on mac...I've got 5.0 now and testing retro 7 on XP. I am trying to mirror our main file server on OSX to our SuSE box, so maybe we can just keep the linux box going as the main file server... I'm not sure about the new 10.4, but mac support for scsi cards hasn't been great as of late. All my cards that ran on OS9 don't run with OSX. And now reading the latest gripes with the 2.6 Linux kernel doesn't give me the "warm and fuzzies". Anything good (software) on the Linux side? (yea, I've looked at the 9.0 and 9.2 CD's but nothing jumped out as great) *What are you guys running that works, and has a good restore history? ________________________________________ I know I can "upgrade" my retro to version 6 (mac) for $200, or version 7 (winblows) for $50 (yea, you read that right) but I'm not sure I want another winblows box just to stream to backup. Retrospect hasn't been too great in the past. Kinda like Quark. [yes, we also backup to disk - a internal ftp box, and a few external drives...but you ever drop a external drive v.s. dropping a tape? Trying to get my SCSI to work

The following is what hwinfo reports. It shows that I have a SCSI controller. It appears that it is not configured. My thought is that the wrong driver was selected during my install since this worked just fine under 8.0. I have 2 Jaz drives connected to the controller. I would appreciate any help I can get here. SCSI is briefly mentioned in dmesg, just saying it is configured but I doubt that since there is no mention of the connected drives and there was under 8.0. SUSE 9.3 Samba and Firewall issue

Hi folks, I think this is very well known issue. But still could not find a right solution for this till Now. (It's there in 9.2, 9.3 and even Fedora 3 and 4 for that matter) Here's the problem: I have SUSE 9.3 installation with samba configured. I have firewall running with ports 137,138 UDP and 139 TCP opened. All windows machines (2K and XP) in my home network are able to access shares and printer on my SUSE box. They can ping the box or browse the shares using DNS name ("Linux" in this case) But SUSE linux box cannot access any of these machines by their DNS names. Its not possible to browse and find computers from konqueror using smb:/ However I can access the windows boxes using their IP without any problems. If I turn off the firewall on Linux Box I can also access the windows boxes by their DNS names. I am not able to figure out which firewall rule is blocking nmb daemon's capability to browse the network. I am using YaST to configure the firewall. (Not familiar with backend - iptables) Can anybody tell me (or point me to) the solution for this problem. I am sure its just a matter of setting/modifying a rule in firewall. but not aware of what it is. Please note there is no firewall on any of the windows boxes. Thanks for help -Kshitij

Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 under Kernel 2.6.8.24

Hi all, I just got a box with a "Hercules 3D Prophet 4500" graphics card and expirienced that it is not supported propperly. Does anybody know how to install it? I allready downloaded the sources for the driver from www.powervr.com for that card but couldn't compile it. It says "/usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h" doesn't exist. I couldn't find that file on my box. Any ideas how to compile and install that one? Thanks Martin

9.2 Prof. - Install crash

I'm trying to install SUSE 9.2 Professional on a friends computer - Compaq Presario, 660mghz, 128K ram, 15gig hard drive. The original system hard drive crashed and I installed a new hard drive, since my friend had none of the original Windows system cd's, I told her I could install SUSE and it should work fine for her use - Web browsing, email, and light word processing. I also bragged a bit about SUSE not crashing and getting overrun with viruses and such. For my own information I booted the system with a Knoppix disc after I installed the new hard drive and it booted fine and recognized the new drive - so I figured I hadn't made any bone head install mistakes (jumper settings and such.) Then when I put in the first SUSE disk, the SUSE splash screen displays, then the install option screen displays, (I chose, install from CD) then the detail scrolls right up to the line, "starting YAST". Then instead of seeing the YAST screen, the display just runs a very dim diagonal static. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Thanks, Regis Matejcik

Hello all, I'm running with an AMD-64 system and a VIA integrated sound card. I've configured the card with alsaconf and it does work, but I'm finding the sound very disappointing. MP3's that played with good sound quality on my old system now sound distorted and "scratchy", as if I'm playing it too loud on an inferior quality speaker system. This works even if I'm using the same headphones I used on my old RH 9 system. Is there anything I can do to tweak the quality of the sound playback? I'm using SuSE Professional Linux 9.3 (the 32 bit version, even though I have a 64 bit CPU). Thanks, Braun Brelin

/dev/hdb1 & 2 disappears with hotplug, maybe.

How can I restore the missing /dev/hdb1 & 2 entries(links?)? I've been using a 9.2 Pro box for going through a stack of older hard disks with various partition arrangements without using YaST to mount them. I also have been using external USB and Firewire drives as backups for various machines as a test. I connected the external drives at various times with hdb installed as well as when hdb was not installed. I just tried a drive as hdb and had trouble using mount to a /mnt directory and it says that hdb can't be mounted and is a 'special'(?) drive. I checked fdisk -l /dev/hdb and it shows all the LINUX types in the listing. I tried YaST's partitioner and while the partitions are shown I can not assign mount points. /sys/block/hdb exists as does /dev/hdb but /dev/hdb1 & 2, both primary partitions are missing. /dev/hdb5 inside an extended partition can be mounted as normal. It could be that udev is working and something is wrong with hdb1 & 2 but I tried Knoppix and I have no trouble mounting all three. I've gotten a feeling that the hotplugging may have done something. I did try the same drive in the external USB and Firewire cases and I noticed a long list of drives in /dev/disk/by-id which appear to be the IDE drives. In /dev/by-path I see what appears to be the external drives even though they are not attached. Can I just erase the contents of /dev and have them created at startup? Is that a really bad idea?

sax2 -p detects on my laptop: CHip: 0 is -> Intel 855 GM 00:02:0 0x8086 0x3582 PCI i810 This is a dual head machine though. How do I tell that to sax2? Also, the latest intel driver is i915. Spellcheck dictionaries

Last year, when I was using Evo 1.4.6 with SuSE Pro 9.0 and Ximian XD2, I asked for and received help in adding French and Portuguese spellchecking. I used Ximian Red Carpet to to install aspell-fr and aspell-pt and they appeared immediately in the Spellchecker Languages window. I just installed (clean) SuSE 9.2 with Evo 2.0.1. I used YaST to install the aspell-fr and aspell-pt files. However, this did not add French and Portuguese to my choices under Settings> Composer Preferences> Spellchecking. How can I write ISO file to a CD with suse 9.2? I tried the command bellow and got an error. This worked under 9.0. Removing Windows partition and using it for /usr

linux firewall or SUSE

My son is having problems with his ( XP ) PC. He seems to be getting smurf attacks, or something like that. I'm not sure I can sway him to run SUSE ( or any Linux distro), but I may be able to get him to run a Linux firewall on another, older, spare PC.
