Seeing What's Going On

Hi, From time to time, I can detect patterns of activity on my system that I cannot readily tie to a particular process. E.g., right now there's a regular activity on my root device. GKrellm shows an ongoing stream of writes (I have read and write activity separated in the disk display). How might I connect this activity to the process that's causing it? Lsof is currently producing about 4500 lines of output, e.g. Thanks in advance for any ideas. Randall Schulz

Making "disable screensaver" stick in kpowersave?

Hi, I am trying to permanently disable the screensaver. Currently every time I log into KDE I have to right-click on the plug icon and select "Disable Screensaver". The next time I log in though, the screensaver is re-enabled. Does anyone know how to make this setting stick? Thanks, Scott

Tweaking TCP

I just had fiber optics installed today, 15M/2M is the speed. When I do a speed test, the download speed comes in around 6-7MB. The Verizon tech had me download the Dr. TCP tool from a web site (link below) that I can run on Windows and insert settings he gave me to get over 13-14MB download speeds. Now I am trying to figure out how I can do the same for my SuSE Linux box. Anyone know what I can do? The settings he has me set are described in Dr. TCP as 'Tcp Receive Window' and 'MTU'. 9.3 /sbin/hotplug

It's missing from my 9.2 --> 9.3 upgrade together with /etc/init.d/udev, but udevd is running. can anyone confirm that this is correct as I can't find them on the DVD. The admin guide page 346 says there should be a /sbin/hotplug, I only have /sbin/hotplugeventrecorder. rebuilding from source rpm udev-053-15.2, no /sbin/hotplug and I'm unable to access any USB devices. Hey Group; Seems to work very well. Try the linux installer version. It is a group of RPMs (100M). So install what you want. It seems quicker and flows more evenly. It is supposed to have better MS Word support also. Wacom Graphire 2 (USB) on SuSE9.1?

I can't get my graphical tablet to work on my new SuSE. On SuSE8.1 it was useable as an USB wheel mouse, but on 9.1 there is no movement visible of the cursor when I choose one of the USB mice. How can I fix this? -- Frits Wüthrich

Problems with Kylix 3 on SuSE 9.3 Pro

I loaded SuSE 9.3 Pro on a workstation yesterday and have spent today loading Kylix 3. After adding "export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 && " into the application link, Kylix does execute. However, the IDE is displayed with tiny fonts that are unreadable. Has anyone else seen this behavior and, if so, can you offer some guidance to help solve the problem? Thanks in advance. PAM LDAP Password Expiration

Hi, I am attempting to setup password expiration when using PAM on SUSE where the Sun Java Directory Server is storing account information. How do I configure this? I have used YAST to configure LDAP. The ldap.conf is configured correctly. Users can login that have their accounts in the Sun Directory Server. However, I don't understand how password expiration works. The Sun Java Directory Server has its own password policy mechanism that does password expiration. Will this work with the PAM that is included on SUSE? I have also looked into storing ShadowAccount information in the directory. Is this the way to go? If so, how do I configure PAM or nsswitch.conf to read this information? Thank you for any help.
