xorg problem in 9.3

Anybody on this list running a system without xdm/kdm? I mean init level 3 and starting X manually with startx. /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg is not suid root in 9.3 (it was in 9.2) and it is the mode coming from xorg-x11-server package. X fails to start without being suid root, of course. Is it a bug in xorg-x11-server-6.8.2-30 (and then I am going to report it to SUSE) or am I missing something obvious here? Thanks, -Kastus

I wanted to thank Randall, Cristian, Christopher, Jack, and James for your valuable feedback about the BitTorrent 5 CD SuSE 9.3 version I've recently downloaded. Any idea about when the FTP version of 9.3 pro will be available? Has SuSE/Novell released a date for this? I have emailed SuSE/Novell and they do offer an upgrade from the 8.2 Pro version -- I think they said $59 for another boxed set with 60 days support instead of the regular 90 days support. I had previously purchased and used SuSE 8.2 Pro boxed set until the laptop died. I have tried many "live" distros on a Dell Inspiron 5150 (sames specs as listed in the "Notebook with XP and SuSE" thread currently being posted), and have been very satisfied with the prospects of successfully loading SuSE. (Never have gotten the Dell/Broadcom 1350 wireless 802.11g card to be usable with the Live distros I've tried.) Again, thanks for your input and suggestions - much appreciated. -*-Bill

Hello SuSE people, There has to be somebody out there that knows the answer to this. There was a previous thread on this topic that resulted in at least 20 replies, but no fix. I have googled forever and find nothing. I've read howto's and did a man on everything I could think of. Short recap: Changed my old 17" monitor running at 800x600 for a new 21" tft-lcd monitor that is run at 1600x1200. Verified that the lcd and the system have the same dpi/resolution. All of the KDE stuff was reconfigurable to increase font sizes and icons to a satisfactory useable size. Runniing 5 apps that utilize gtk. All of the fonts in these 5 apps are so teeny they are practically unuseable. (Note: Can increase the dpi significantly and the app will appear much larger but the fonts remain the same) I am convinced, and PLEASE tell me if I am wrong, that the dpi has nothing to do with the font size utilized. There must be some kind of system wide control to change the fonts in ALL of these apps. I had this same problem several years ago and could be solved by running gnomecc and/or by changing settings manually in gtrkrc. gnomecc no longer exists and for some reason I do not have .gtkrc or .gtkrc-2 installed in my home user directory. Someone suggested gtk-qt-engine which is supposedly an applet to resolve these things between KDE and the gtk apps. Can't figure out how to run it and it is installed. Found an app called Qt Settings (is that the gtk-qt-engine interface?) which I ran and appears as that should do what is needed. Does not reset anything. Also, I know that UserChrome.css supposedly can be used for Firefox and NVU to set user preferences. That doesn't seem to work either but maybe I am not doing it correctly. That leaves 3 other apps that don't have that configurability even if it did work. Just don't know what to do anymore. I have spent days on this. Someone has to know the answer. Please help. Half the apps I use every day aren't really useable. I really need a Guru to step in here and hold my hand. Bob S.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I guess I didn't "catch it." I've tried to figure out what app. is causing the system to write briefly to the hard drive every few seconds........rather annoying. Is this normal for 9.3, as 9.2 didn't do this on this box....same file system, etc. Fred -- "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!" Hi, I'm about to embark on an installation of 9.3. In some articles I've been looking at (about core components like postfix, for example) there is an implication that if I want to use this with another product, say, OpenLDAP, then I must re-compile from the source with certain options set. If I were to use YaST to install postfix and OpenLDAP, apart from tweaking the configuration files, are they already configured to work together? (I'm looking to set postfix, fetchmail, dovecot, squirrelmail, PHP, MySQL, Apache, HylaFAX, OpenLDAP, OpenSWAN, Samba and CUPS and would prefer to use them 'out of the box' rather than having to rebuild!) Many Thanks John - a relative newbie but somewhat confused ;-)

raid test failure of hda

After succesfully installing a raid1 (with disk hda and hdc) and lvm, I'm now testing a disk failure. I can easily do this as the system has been equipped with a removable harddisk slot for hda. Before I continue, I can start the system as configured by yast that is using hd0,0. The other raid disk is hd1,0 (which is confirmed by 'find /boot/vmlinuz on the grub prompt). I added an entry to grub/menu.lst that uses hd1,0. I can successfully boot the system now using either hd0,0 or hd1,0. After I remove hda from the slot the system stops in an empty grub menu (ascii). Disk hdc is bootable, ... oh wait hdc's mbr is empty of course... Is this the reason that it is not starting? Just tried to install grub on hdc, but the answer from the system is: # grub-install /dev/hdc /dev/md0 does not have a corresponding bios drive. Is it possible to alter the MBR in /dev/hdc? ps: I can also start the system using by selecting 'installation' from the suse disk and than -> boot installed OS -> this finds that a bootable system on /dev/md0 (while hda is removed from the system)... -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Yast unable to mount NFS share

I'm trying to set up Yast "Software Source Media", using an NFS share. I've exported the directory containing the contents of the SuSE 9.3 DVD, using the no_root_squash option. Both root and users can mount that share. However, when I try to set up Yast to access that share, I get an error message "Media:insufficient permissions". Any idea, as to the cause of the problem? tnx jk

1280x800 WXGA on SuSE 9.3

Hi, I am trying to set up SUSE Pro 9.3 to work with the TFT WXGA 1280x800 (16:10) screen of an Acer TravelMate 2303 laptop. The problem is that although I configure X to use 1280x800 via SaX2, KDE (and GNOME) start in 1024x768. I once managed to make KDE work at a physical resolution of 1024x768 with a virtual resolution of 1280x800, but of course this is not what I want. Because the screen is 16:10 and 1024x768 is 4:3, whatever is shown on the screen under SUSE is distorted and reading is not comfortable. SaX2 does not seem able to solve my problem, and xf86config does not include 1280x800 resolution in its resolution selection menu. Therefore I should edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf manually. I posted my /etc/X11/xorg.conf if you want to see it: http://nsk.wikinerds.org/blog/index.php?p=160 If it of any relevance, during the initial installation of SUSE I chose the 1024x768 resolution from the menu, because there was no 16:10-compatible resolution available in the menu. SuSE 9.3 installation on IBM x345

Hi, I've unsuccessfully tried to install SuSE 9.3 on an IBM x345 server. After the packages were installed and SuSE made a reboot, the machine hangs with the message: "Kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda3 vga=0x317 selinux=0 acpi=off resume=/dev/sda2 splash=silent [ Linux bzImage, setup=0x1600, size=0x17685b ]" No other kernel messages, nothing. My hardware: IBM x345 (2CPUs) with IBM ServeRAID 5i (1 RAID5 array) Partitions: /dev/sda1 /boot (ext2) /dev/sda2 swap /dev/sda3 / (reiserfs) Bootloader: GRUB 1. I start the rescue system from the dvd and could access the partitions (rw). 2. I started a "new installation", then cancel the installation and then boot installed system. The system comes up without any errors, so I could finish the installation. 3. I already tried the smp, bigsmp and the default kernel with same result; guess the problem is not the kernel rather the bootloader or the initrd. 4. I also "reconfigured" the initrd (registered scsi or/and raid modules in /etc/sysconfig/kernel and started mkinitrd) which brought however nothing. 5. I run for at least 6 months on identically constructed servers SuSE 9,0 (2.4.21), 9,1 (2.6.5) and 9,2 (2.6.8) without any problems. I'm a newbie so I'm out of ideas. Thanks in advance Dan P.S. SuSE 9.3 Pro 5 CD ISO set

I want to thank whoever posted the address of the site that has the 5 SuSE 9.3 Pro CD images available for BitTorrent access. BitTorrent is new to me and I've set my Windows XP laptop to use the torrent (and make my downloaded data available for others to download) -- I now have the 5 CD ISO images on my machine. The MD5Sums correspond to the sums listed on the website ( http://www.interknet.net/bt/?torrent=suse93 ). Great! My question is: how do I know that these are authentic, unaltered SuSE distribution CDs? How do I know if these images haven't been tampered with and that the tampered MD5Sums have been included? Of course I verify that posted sum correctly. Please... don't get me wrong, I'm very appreciative that this individual has made this available as a shared resource for us SuSE Linux fans. How do I trust these images? That they don't have an embedded root kit or something else installed? Overly paranoid? Thanks in advance for your comments/feedback. -*-Bill

9.3 Live, problem with my Prism WLAN adaptor

Hello suse-linux-e, I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L1300 laptop with a ethernet port and a Prism WLAN Wifi as well. I booted the live disk and it seemed to detect both cards okay. In fact the ethernet card worked perfectly. However I could not logon onto my WIFI router. It is currently set to open as there are no security problems with that as I live in a very rural area. However in dmesg I get the following message for it: PRISM54: requested_firmware(): failed for 'isl3886' ETH0: could not upload firmware ('isl3886') ETH0: ISLPCI-reset: failure I had to copy these as I have a Draytek miniVigor USB ISDN PC with the laptop, I am getting a Cisco 801 TA to plug into the router next week. I use the laptop a lot away from home and use various paid/free hotspots around the country and therefore need wifi. time & filesystem problem(s?)

I have a problem I don't understand on a new Opteron box running 9.2. I have two supposedly identical boxes and one is running fine whilst the clock on the other drifts into the future (2 days as of this morning). This morning I've also discovered that the root filesystem has become read-only over the weekend. I don't know whether these symptoms are caused by the same problem or if they are two separate problems? I don't really know where to look. I have ntp running on both machines and that seems like a candidate for the source of the clock trouble at least. The daemon still seemed to be running: ntp 4440 1 0 May19 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/ntpd -p /var/lib/ntp/var/run/ntp/ntpd.pid -u ntp -i /var/lib/ntp I rebooted and /var/log/messages now contains: May 25 04:56:23 suse2 kernel: Losing some ticks... checking if CPU frequency changed. Importing a certificate

I have a free X509 certificate from www.cacert.org, which I have sucessfully imported into Firefox. From Firefox I've exported the cert as a PKCS#12 backup file. I then used KDE Control Centre (Crypto applet) to import the certificate bundle which works OK, it asks if I want to use the certificate for email signing I say yes and it opens Kleopatra which asks for the passphrase and then complains that it can't decrypt the certificate. xorg-x11-server rpm verification problem

Hi, Just upgraded 3 machines from 9.2 to 9.3 and encountered a problem with mode of /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg file on two of them. For some reason SUID bit was missing in the mode and X obviously was failing to start for a regular user. "rpm -V xorg-x11-server" reported no errors. I added SUID bit with command "chmod u+s /usr/X11R6/binXorg" on one machine and after that rpm verification complained that expected mode should be 4711 and it was 4744. OK, chmod again and rpm -V was happy on that machine. On another machine mode of /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg was 711, after I changed it to 4711, rpm -V complains: rpm -V xorg-x11-server ..?..... /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg should be root:root 0711. (wrong permissions 4711) ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg -rws--x--x 1 root root 1847788 2005-03-22 09:33 /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg At the same time, dump of xorg-x11-server rpm reports expected file mode 0100711: rpm -q --dump xorg-x11-server | grep bin/Xorg /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg 1847788 1111512809 e68e9893c356e15f9ee08a87e01788a5 0100711 root root 0 0 0 X I tried rebuilding rpm db on the second machine but it made no difference. Can anybody explain what's going on here? Why rpm dump reports correct mode of the file matching mode on the file system and rpm -V reports an error contradicting rpm dump? adjust disk cache

I just discovered a graphical display of memory under KDE. I noticed that about 49MB of my total 128MB of ram is being consumed by disk cache. This computer does not seem slow, but it does seem to have problems when I am running several programs at once, like Suse help and a konsole. Can this cache be adjusted? Kat and libpoppler

Hi, I've been interested in Kat (<http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=22135>) ever since I learned of it, so I was pleased to see version 0.5.2 show up in the KDE supplementary update area of the mirror I use (<ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.3/yas…>). Unfortunately, that RPM cannot be installed because of two unsatisfied dependencies: libpoppler-qt.so.0 and libpoppler.so.0. (Poppler is a PDF rendering library, presumably used by Kat to examine the textual contents of PDF files it finds.) Does anyone know: a) Why they'd publish an RPM with unsatisfied dependencies and b) Where I can find these poppler library RPMs? Thanks. Randall Schulz

SuSE9.3 Pro

Hey Group; I noticed a new problem with Yast at the selection part of an install. That is that it wants a /media/floppy (default setting) to export or save the user.sel file on. Problem is there is not a /media directory so if fails. I went to an alternate tty# and did mkdir which fixed the problem, Yast then would either write to a FAT or ext2 floppy to the default fd0. It also had problems on the HD reboot trying to run fsck on my usb hard drive sda1. Fixed this by editing fstab and removing the mention of sda1. Under 9.2 it was listed under subfs and not as a common IDE type HD like 9.3. Finally, why is Mozilla missing the "Mail&Newgroup" function? I will say that so far is a pretty small list. Cron job to rescue system from freezes

Hello, I'm asking this question in the hopes that someone can help. Running SuSE 9.2 along with a Nvidia 5200 video card using nvidia module 1.0-6629 (the current module makes not difference to my problem). After a few days of uptime the system will freeze where the mouse and keyboard no longer work. The last time this happened I was running kdetv and netscape. Sound from the TV continued to work. I ran memtest over night (about 12 hours) and no errors were found so I do not think it is a memory problem. The next thing to check is the video card. Is there a way of checking out a video card to see if it is locking up the system? Does anyone know if there is a command which could be executed by a cron job to determine if the system (mouse/keyboard) is locked and then reset the system to level 3 (init 3) or somehow unlock the keyboard. Low Sound Volume

I just added a C-Media C8738-MC6 audio card. For a long time the sound volume was very, very low and I had to run my speaker volume way up to hear it. Then I started playing with audio settings. I opened up K-Mix...for each slider there are green lights at the top and red lights at the bottom. I have no idea what they mean but when I clicked on the red light at the bottom of the PCM slider, suddenly the volume turned up to a normal, clear level. However, if I use the slider on RealPlayer, the volume goes back down...until I click the red light again. It doesn't seem to matter if I click it on or off, it just makes the sound normal. Questions: 1) What are these green and red lights? 2) Is there some way or some other setting I can change to make the normal sound volume 'stick' ?

Bootable Iso CD

I am rapidly running out of blank CD's and I have run out of patience. I have been trying to burn an iso image of the Vigyaan bio/chemical software workbench and is designed to be a bootable iso image based on Knoppix v3.7 (www.vigyaancd.org/index.html). I now that it works because I have the earlier version on a bootable CD. I have tried both K3b and the gnome CD/DVD Creator. The both have written the iso numerous times, but when I attempt to boot the machine (which is set to boot from the CD as the first boot device. Hello SuSE people, In kmail, at the bottom of the header, there is a white rectangular box labeled spamassassin. Sometimes messages from this list put varying degrees of color into this box, from yellow > red. I don't have spamassassin installed or running. Explanation ? Bob S.

Tiny fonts again

Hello SuSE people, Here we go again. Got a beautiful new 21" lcd monitor fron all of my children for the old guys's birthday. Installed jusr fine. (Samsung ) Of courae with higher resolutions I had to change icons and fonts in KDE. Not a problem. But when it comes to Firefox, GQview, Gimp, and the KDM logon screen, I end up with teeny tint fonts. Less than 1/8" high and almost impossibe for the old guy to read. Fixed the KDM logon screen by editing kdmrc. This happened a couple of years ago in 8.0? and I fixed it by running gnomecc. Don't have that anymore in 9.2. Suggestions on how to increase font sizes in X for the apps that KDE doesn't handle ?? Bob S.

Recommendation for exterior hard drive

Some people seem to have had some problems with exterior hard drives on 9.3 I finally got round to trying my Maxtor exterior on 9.3 last week. Perfect. It's USB and connected without any fuss and set up an icon on the desktop (KDE). It installs as sda1 All permissions are set up fine. I hope this is of some help to anybody who is thinking of getting an exterior drive. If anybody needs more information I am more than happy to post them up :-) -- Take care. Thank you again Graham for looking at and editing the necessary files. I have reverted back to the list in case it helps others. I know, from Windows days, that the server must be booted first, ten the clients. I did this specifically making sure the printer initialized. I figured now, with the correct conf files, it would a simple matter of pressing print on the Mozilla GUI on the client and the page would automagically eject from the printer connected to the server. Alas I was wrong. :( I 'checked' the client settings via the Yast printer configuration but all was in place. I noticed that the test failed when I tested connectivity to the server in Yast. Assuming it was still going to work I soldiered on... ...When I did press 'Print' on the Mozilla GUI I was presented with a KPrinter GUI that said it was initialising and that it was connected to Umalusi:631. NO amount of clicking on the close option or even looking for kprinter under a terminal screen could get the KPrinter dialogs to disappear. I also tried the printer manager from the printer icon on the task bar with the same result. It actually took 2 reboots to rid myself of the Kprinter dialogs. So, now what needs tweaking? Especially since I get a 100msec ping reply from the server when I ping 192.168.0.1 on the client side. I assume that because I am getting a reply back on the ping that the machines are 'talking' to one another. Where should I check error messages after I have tried to print? Hi all, I was wondering if someone can explain to me what all the SuSE services(daemons) are for? I understand most of them but theres a bunch that i dont know about. And i dont know what kind of service they provide and if i need them at all. So how about we make a list here for future reference to anyone else. Apps not shutting down

I'm having trouble with apps shutting down fully in 9.2 Pro. One is the KNode newsreader. I constantly have to ps -ef | grep and kill -9 to make sure all copies have released before relaunching. This goes for Real Player as well -- there seem to be one copy in memory for each time I've loaded a streaming radio station. Then there's bzflag. If I press quit it just sits there...I have to Ctrl-Alt-F1 to launch a new terminal and kill -9 it. And, last but not least, the whole GUI won't shut down about 1 out of 3 times when I log off -- I have to do it at least 2 or 3 times before it actually ends the session or restarts.

Define root's email from address

I have some scripts which use the "mail" program to email a remote email address. The problem I am having is that the upstream mail server we send through isa bouncing these mails back as undeliverable as the senders address is not resolving. The error is similar to: <root(a)store.atlantic>... Domain of sender address root(a)store.atlantic does not exist (in reply to MAIL FROM command) How do I setup root's senders address to be something like root(a)myvalidinternetdomain.com ? I assume it is all down to /root/.mailrc, but I am struggling to find the appropriate syntax for doing this. Any ideas ? Richard

Maintaining Gnome settings in KDE

Is there a way (without starting gnome-settings-daemon at KDE startup) to maintain Gnome settings while using KDE? I'm using KDE as my default environment, but I've got font settings for gtk apps I want maintained (fonts, styles, etc.). At this time I'm starting the gnome-settings-daemon at KDE start, but was wondering if there was a better way. changing PIM to kdepim

I'm thinking of changing my pim to kdepim, and I have a few questions. >From what I've seen (having never run it), the mail client keeps its mail in ~/Mail. Where do the contact manager, task manager, and calendar keep their respective data files? I have to keep a desktop and a laptop synchronized, especially for contacts, tasks and addresses. Does this require a fancy sync program, or can I just use something like unison? I have two desktops. They are different enough that I can't simply link the home directory of one to the other, but several of the directories in my home directory on my secondary desktop are links to my server via nfs, which doubles as my main desktop. Evolution won't let me do this with the ~/.evolution directory without loads of permission errors. Will I have trouble with the kpim applications? TIA.

9.3 Install Failure

Decided to install SuSE 9.3 last night on my main box which consists of a single 160GB EIDE drive used for storage only, i.e., no OS on it, and 4 removable SCSI HDs, only one of which is turned on at a time. There are multiple other devices in the system but I believe these are the only two of importance. What I experienced during this SuSE 9.3 install I also experienced trying to install Mepis 2004 on another of the SCSI drives. The install goes smoothly, with a start by reformatting the drive to get the OS, and by selecting to place the boot info on the mbr of the SCSI drive, changing from the default suggestion of placing it on the mbr of the EIDE drive. **I'm thinking my problem lies here.** Upon initial reboot I get the following (1) if the install DVD is still in the drive or (2) if the DVD is removed from the drive. (1) GNU GRUB version 0.95 (638K lower/523184 upper memory) next is a text box display with three boot options --------------------------- SuSE Linux 9.3 Floppy Failsafe – SuSE Linux 9.3 --------------------------- and some instructions below the text box. Selecting the SuSE 9.3 option and <CR> gives: Booting 'SUSE LINUX 9.3' kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda2 vga=0x317 selinux=0 splash=silent resume=/dev/sda1 showopts Error 22: No such partition Press any key to continue . . . doing so puts you back into the text box to choose again (2) GNU GRUB version 0.95 (638K lower/523184 upper memory) [Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename.] grub> _ {flashing} trying a couple of suggested options, I get the following: grub> boot Error 8: Kernel must be loaded before booting grub> kernel Error 1: Filename must be either an absolute pathname or blocklist Not sure where to go from here other than disabling the EIDE drive and trying from scratch. KDE update screwwed up one userr

On my 9.2 system, while doing a Yast online update, the user I was running from got messed up during the update, causing some major issues with Mozilla programs only. (If while logged in as a different user, I can do a alt F2 and run any of the mentioned packages as the damaged user, no problemo). Can I delete the KDE property files for that user (logged in as root) then log in as the broken user to create new files? TIA Harry G

Thanks NSK. I hadn't noticed the "embedded" tab :-) However, the error has now changed to "There appears to be a configuration error. You have associated Konqueror with text/html, but it can't handle this file type." When I had KHTML in the "General" tab I got the "can't find KHTML executeable" error message, but I suppose that that might be to be expected. Jos van Kan has also made a suggestion - I'll respond to him via his email. I'm still open to suggestions. Thanks for helping me get that bit organised. Regards, Colin

All of those RPMs are installed already. Kaffine comes up and comes back and say it can not play it. I have tried decss loaded. Firefox 1.0.4 vs. various extensions

Hi, Is there anyone out there using Firefox 1.0.4 (or 1.0.3) together with the newest 'Adblock' and/or 'Flashblock' extension(s)? I'm on SUSE 9.1, and when I tried to move from 1.0 to 1.0.3 I had serious problems with the above extensions even separately. So before moving to the newest release, 1.0.4, just collecting some info; all kind of feedbacks are very welcome! Thanks, Pelibali

Dear my friends, I use SuSE 9.2, ADSL-Router-Modem Linksys WAG54G, Acer TravelMate 2350 & 802.11b/g WLAN IPN2220. The WLAN card is built-in as I bought this laptop from ACER. I want to use the Linksys router as an ADSL Gateway. I use the default SSID : "linksys", and disabled the WEP. I configured the WLAN card with YaST2, it founded the WLAN card. I configured my WLAN to use DHCP client and Dynamic DNS. But the problem is: my suse can not connected to my router (+access point). If my SuSE starts, I found message: "no interface found".
