This SuSE 8.2 system has run 24/7 more than 2 years. hostname used to work, and the prompts would use it. Not any more, and I have no idea why, or when it broke, but it probably only broke within the past 3-8 weeks. #hostname (none) #uname -n (none) #uname -a Linux (none) 2.4.20-4GB #1 Fri Jan 14 15:08:13 UTC 2005 i586 unknown unknown GNU/Linux #cat /etc/HOSTNAME ax5t3.ij.net #nslookup ax5t3 Server: 207.22.166.61 Address: 207.22.166.61#53 ** server can't find ax5t3.ij.net: NXDOMAIN nslookup doesn't work on any of my puters. :-( SuSEconfig also returns "unknown host". Timestamp on 13 byte /etc/HOSTNAME is Nov 2003. Various 1st lines in /etc/resolv.conf have no apparent impact. Anyone have any idea how to fix this? -- "Love your neighbor as yourself." Video Cards w/ DVI

Hi, With my fancy new UXGA display working well (i.e., with all the various software configuration issues sorted out and fine-tuned), I'm now looking to see just how good it gets. Specifically, I'm looking for / considering a DVI-capable video adaptor. I'm currently using a Matrox G400, which has only VGA outputs, of course. According to a very good and detailed article on Tom's Hardware Guide (<http://www20.graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041129/index.html>), getting the most from DVI at UXGA resolutions and above is technically very demanding. They reviewed several cards and the only ones they gave good reviews and accorded full compliance were those based on ATI Radeon processors. In contrast, all of the nVidia-based cards they reviewed were given marginal evaluations. I have gotten the impression that nVidia has the best driver support, though one must manually install the nVidia-supplied driver since they don't allow Linux vendors to include this driver in their distributions. Apparently, there are more problems using Radeon cards. I have not been able to find a lot of information on these issues. Could someone clue me in or supply some good pointers? If anyone is already using a UXGA with DVI and has specific recommendations, suggestions or feedback, I'd love to hear it. Thanks. Randall Schulz

CDDB Flaw - Solution?

Hi, I do a lot of music stuff on my SUSE 9.3 KDE 3.4 systems and today I ran into a quirk in the CDDB system. A CD that was loaded was found in the CDDB and that info was applied just as we expect AUDIOCD:/ to work; but the submitter of that CDDB entry used the " / " char in each track title. When I clicked to the OGG dir for that CD and tried to 'drag' those OGG files (requesting encoding and placement in the dragged TO dir) KDE/AUDIOCD reported an error and aborted the operation. I found that it is not possible to edit the track title info in the AUDIOCD window. I was forced to go to GRIP, which allows editing. Anyone figured out how to edit titles/tracks in KDE AUDIOCD? Short answer, don't do that next time. As long as everything works, leave it alone. Attached is a compressed list of non-root.root files and directories in /usr. (Only in private reply.) (Semi-OT) Travelstar locked disk

I'm trying to set up a second IBM (Hitachi) Travelstar 20GB disk for use with my Fujitsu-Siemens laptop. However, it seems like the Travelstar disk is locked by the infamous ATAPI HDD master lock. Does anyone know how to reset the disk? Without sending it to Nortel and pay them almost $100 to unlock it, 5 times more than I paid for the drive.. Anders.

Realplayer can be depreciated

Hi, In Control Panel> KDE Components> File Associations it is easy to choose which components to play your multimedia files. Just pick (for example) Vorbis-OGG and then go to the list of associated components and click "Move Down" or "Move Up" to pick the priority for each player. Odd that in my 9.3 sys Realplayer is the first TWO entries listed. PeterB

Help getting around NVIDIA problems.

I have posted to this list many times my problems with NVIDIA drivers on my SuSE Pro 9.1 system. The issue is the GUI / Splash / X Window system never comes up. I have installed the latest 7167 drivers, made a few changes to the XFree86 config files (mostly to do with keyboard settings). All to no avail. I would most like to thank Jeffrey Laramie for his help but there have been many others. Ok .. on to the question. I am looking at solutions. Here are some option / questions. What does the list think I should try and in what order??? Upgrade to 9.3. Since I don't think this does anything to either the NVIDIA drivers or the XFree86 config files I doubt this would be much of a solution. Comments? Look for another, supported X Window software system, even if it not free. Back in my Red Hat days I used to use Accelerated X with good result. Are there any commercial X Window alternatives for SuSE? The idea here is for the $$ I would get tech support. Replace the graphics card on the tower. Scary as I hate hardware solutions and picking on that I know would work out of the box with XFree86 is something im clueless on. Comments?? I will take all comments and suggestions on here. If anyone wants to take a stab at the problem i can upload and config / log files needed. I am at the end of my rope on these. Peace and thanks. john

SUSE 9.3 LiveCD

I am trying the new 9,3 Livecd, but I can not et it to start. I have tried both options, but when it come to deceting hardware, it stops, I have to turn my PC off to get it up again. I am using 9.2 with no problem. I have no special hardware, Epson scanner 1260 on usb, HP printer 3820 on usb. Gunnar

You can verify that with fdisk -l /dev/sda (prints the partition table). As to why only root? I assume because mount can be a dangerous command and can be used to cause data to written where users don't expect it. i.e. Assume mount could be run by any user for a minute and user1 is trying to steal data created by user2 in their home directory. If user1 says mount /dev/sda1 /home, the command will succeed and all of /home would be replaced by /dev/sda1 (potentially a usb drive). If user1 made a look alike of /home on the seperate disk before using mount to replace /home, the user2 may not realize the disk below /home was replaced. Then after user2 writes valuable data to /home, user1 un-mounts it and pulls the fake drive. user1 then takes it to another computer where user1 has root access and looks thru the valuable data. Since mount requires root priveledges, user1 can't perform the above breach of security without the root password, and if they have the root password they can already read user2's files without all that effort.
