samba problem

I have tried to add samba users with both webmin an smbpasswd command an get erors . using smbpasswd i get the following horizon:~ # smbpasswd -a jack ERROR: empty passdb backend list! New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: invalid pdb_context specified! Failed to add entry for user jack. Failed to modify password entry for user jack I have just installed suse 9.2 from scratch on this machine again after adding new raid card an hd's. I have never seen this before. thanks for any help. jack

awk command on text files

Hi all, I've a lot of text files like the one you can see at the end of my mail (starting with Message-ID). I need to import parts of those messages into mysql: Message-ID, Subject, From, Newsgroups, and the text which is in html. I want to first create the text files containing only the information I want to import and then import them in mysql Using "awk '$1~/Message-ID/ || $1~/Subject/ || $1~/From/ || $1~/Newsgroups/ ' 4060bb67.txt > txt1.awk". I'm able to take the first fields and using "awk ' /<body>/,/<\/body>/ ' 4060bb67.txt > text2.awk" the text in html but when I try one unique command it just doesn't work. Any idea? Is there perhaps a more elegant way of doing the same thing? Win4Lin Pro: Will it keep XP and IE6 vulnerabities secure from attack?

On Feb 21 Win4Lin announced its new Pro edition, saying Windows 2000 and Win XP applications can now be used safely by Linux users without fear of Microsoft's virus prone operating system affecting Linux computers. One part of the announcement is quoted as follows: "With the stable Linux architecture as its foundation, Win4Lin Pro protects PCs from Windows viruses and other prevalent forms of malware. Win4Lin Pro limits the impact of a Windows system failure or security flaw to only the virtual sandbox in which the applications are running. Thus Windows malfunctions cannot cause system-wide failures." I make frequent use of a one gigabite bible software program called Libronix from Logos Software whose tech support people said: "Libronix piggybacks on IE6 DLLs as a major part" of its integrated system. Since I need the IE6 DLLs, and cannot separate IE6 from Windows XP, I cannot use WINE. Rather, I need the entire Win XP installed in the Win4Lin Pro shell. I am assuming this would permit me to use Libronix in SuSE Pro 9.2. Does this sound correct to you guys? Will 'installing' Win XP into Win4Lin Pro (is that terminology correct?) open my Linux system to Windows' vulnerability to viruses and other bad things? The "virtual sandbox" discussed in paragraph two would contain, in my case, only WinXP (including IE6) and the Libronix Bible software. Since I write some biblical-thought papers, I would need a word processor available to extract and assimilate info from various Bible versions and many commentaries. OpenOffice.org would work OK but would be outside my "virtual sandbox". I don't know enough about how "vulnerabilities" are exploited to know if my computer system would be open to attack if I would use Win4Lin Pro this way. Is this a normal Firefox about:config setting?

Hi Everybody, I'm running Firefox 1.0.1-4.1 -- recently upgraded by apt from the following repository: ftp://mirrors.mathematik.uni-bielefeld.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.2-i386/RPMS.mozilla/ I was poking around in preferences (via about:config) and was startled to find the following preference: Preference Name Status Type Value network.dns.ipv4OnlyDomains default string .doubleclick.net This appeared to be a default setting because the text style didn't change to bold until after I'd modified it (set to 'true' instead of ".doubleclick.net", so far with no problems). Google returns many posts about this discussing popups, page loading problems and the like but I can't discern a pattern. Does anybody here know about this? Modules loaded automaticaly on boot

Hi, It has been some times since I've been looking for this functionnality, so now I've found it, I want to share it with you :-) If you want some kernel modules to be automatically loaded at boot, edit /etc/sysconfig/kernel and place all the module needed between double quotes of the MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT variable. example : ## Type: string ## ServiceRestart: boot.loadmodules # # This variable contains the list of modules to be loaded # once the main filesystem is active # MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT="pppoatm dazuko" Now I can connect directly the internet with my antivirus activated... Gnome 2.8 for SuSE 9.2???

I notice that there is no directory on the Novell web site for Gnome for SuSE 9.2, much less an offering of Gnome 2.8. I had thought that, witht he acquisition of Ximian, there would be some more diligent upkeep of the Gnome offerings. Is there any source for Gnome 2.8 in rpms for SuSe 9.x? Thanks dj tuchler

Long DNS lookup times with 9.2

All, I am using dhcp and when I use firefox to go to websites it takes for ever to do dns lookups. The browser just sort of sits then finally resolves the names. When I do a nslookup or a dig from the cli everything comes resolves very quickly. I have set it to static ip address and also static dns and the browser still takes for ever to resolv for some reason. I had a intel desktop 1000MT nic card I swapped that for a 3com nic and still the same issues. So I then installed a dns server locally on the box and change the resolv.conf to point to 127.0.0.1 there was no difference. Any ideas?

USB scanner control timeout with SuSE 9.1

Hi, I've seen a lot of traffic about USB scanners and SuSE 9.1, but most of this seems to have been about problems configuring the Sane backend. I think my problem is a USB communication problem because I can make initial, but not sustained contact with the scanner. I'd be appreciate advice anyone can offer. 1) Problem summary (details in 3 below) Having configured Sane epson backend and sorted out libsub permissions, I am now at the stage where after initially powering on the scanner I get sensible output from sane-find-scanner and scanimage -L (including as non root). However, if I repeat scanimage -L after a few seconds it fails to locate the scanner (even if issued by root). VueScan also fails. YaST hardware info. tool also fails. The only way to locate the scanner is to restart it, but again it 'disappears' after a few seconds. I did all that to start with. Actually, I had that working for dialup with the modem on ppp0 and I switched it to eth1. I also tried pinging back and forth from different boxes and the server. I can ping net addresses and internal network boxes from my server, so the connections are fine. Thanks for the ideas. I tried to respond to your first post, but had downloaded the mail to my server and then found out I can't send mail. A problem for tomorrow! LOL Thanks, Jim
