Precision 380 SATA drive not found in 9.2 install

I have recently tried to install Suse Professional 9.2 on a Dell Precision 380. Unfortunately, the OS does not recognize the SATA controller during install. The Dell box has an Intel 82801 GR/GH ICH7R/DH SATA raid controller. There are no drivers available for Suse from Intel and the ata_piix kernel module does not recognize the hard drives. I have tried to switch the SATA controller to "combination" in bios. It can than recognize the drive, setup the partitions but while the drive is being formatted, it just hangs forever. Any ideas?

Funky DVD / Drive Behavior

Hi, Recently I began to have trouble with YaST refusing to use the SuSE 10.0 commercial DVD for new package installations. It claimed there wasn't a distribution on the device, though clearly there was, as I'd installed from it many times already. Examining it via the shell seemed to show everything being in order, but when I went to look at .../media.1/media, I got this: % cat /media/SU1000_001/media.1/media cat: /media/SU1000_001/media.1/media: Input/output error Since I have two DVD recorders in this system, I switched to the other one and when using that drive, everything's working fine. YaST will install from that drive and cat shows the expected contents of the .../media.1/media file. Experimenting further, I tried these commands: % dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/null bs=4096 1048575+1 records in 1048575+1 records out 4294965248 bytes (4.3 GB) copied, 534.002 seconds, 8.0 MB/s % dd if=/dev/hdc of=/dev/null bs=4096 2082936+0 records in 2082936+0 records out 8531705856 bytes (8.5 GB) copied, 1089.81 seconds, 7.8 MB/s /dev/hda is the misbehaving drive and /dev/hdc is the one that works. Hda is a Sony DRU-720A dual-layer writer, hdc is an older Sony DRU-510A single-layer writer (both are capable of reading dual-layer media). Both are IDE drives configured as masters of the two separate IDE buses of my mainboard. There are no slaves on those buses and all other mass storage is on SCSI. It seems very odd that while no error was reported, reading stopped on hda after 4.3 GB while hdc when the full 8.5 GB. One might suppose that hda couldn't handle the layer switch yet reported no error when it should have done so. Another oddity I noticed when conducting these experiments was high CPU usage when accessing hda. It turns out its DMA had gotten turned off somehow. I reenabled it and ran the test again. Aside from going about twice as fast, nothing changed. Has anybody seen symptoms like this? Can you shed any light on what might have happened to the malfunctioning drive to account for these peculiar symptoms? Thanks. Randall Schulz

It appears the protected option will only stick if any other package installation state in YaST is changed, i.e. installed or removed. This option is also only available to already installed packages. If you want to install a SuSE rpm via YaST and protect it from any future updates via YOU, install it as normal then go back to the installation screen, right-click the package and select 'protected' then select *another* arbitary package and install that as well. Now go back to the installation screen one more time and remove the arbitary package you just installed. You will also notice the protected tag has now 'stuck' to the original package. cdrecord writes nonportable DVDs

Cdrecord is giving me a problem: the DVDs it writes are readable only on the machine where they were written. It wasn't always this way; older ones from the same drive/machine/software are readable anywhere. I suspect that the drive has somehow gotten out of calibration, but I'd like to avoid replacing it. One indicator is that cdrecord gives me the message: cdrecord: WARNING: Drive returns wrong startsec (0) using -150 I googled the message and got many results, but none seem particular to this message. I don't even know if the message is relevant to the problem, or if there's anything I can do to make it go away. Is there some way to write the DVDs more conservatively that's likely to cure the problem? Paul

KDE 3.5 Upgrade Problem -- python-qt

I have the pre-release KDE 3.5 installed OK on SuSE 9.3. Got it from SuSE supplementary source via YaST's "Install and Remove Software" about a week ago. Now I want to update to the official 3.5 release but ran into a problem. It has a missing dependency: kdebindings3-python requires python-qt which is apparently not available. The pre-release 3.5 version does not have this package but it also didn't call it out as a dependency. kdebindings3-python is required in turn by hplip -- needed by CUPS to support my HP Laserjet printer. So, it seems I cannot install the official KDE 3.5. Does anyone have a way around this? Bob

Fatal: LILO internal error:

The hard disk has a one GB partition (/dev/hda1) with MS-DOS V5.0 on it, this is to be preserved. The remaining 79 GB are free for Linux. New installation of SuSEV9.2, changed bootloader from Grub to LILO. When the system is ready to install the bootloader, I get the message Fatal: LILO internal error: would overwrite Partition Table Warning: LBA32 addressing assumed Warning: boot record relocation is necessary: /dev/sda in lilo.conf, boot is set to /dev/sda. I can't see any reason why the boot sector could not be in the MBR. When I change the bootloader to Grub, it works and the system is bootable. All the other machines we have run LILO as the boot loader, and for consistencys sake, I would like to boot this one too using LILO. Why can Grub use the MBR as boot sector but LILO can't? What do I do to get LILO going? Thanks Peter

I install Suse 10 (CD-GM version) in my Laptop Toshiba M45 S355, but my laptop don't get IP from my DHCP Server (modem router conected in ADSL). Getting 10.0 onto a Mac G4?

Hello all! Tried installing SuSE10 (from the ISO's at gwdg.de) But it fails on the partitoning. It used to be a OsX on it, but the company i got it from had erased it. So i booted it up on the first CD, and told it to erase all partitions and use the whole disk for linux. It crashed yelling about not being able to create partition. I rebooted into rescue mode and ran fdisk " There is a valid Mac label on this disk. Unfortunately Linux cannot handle these disks at the moment. Nevertheless some advice: 1. fdisk will destroy its contents on write 2. Be sure that this disk in NOT a still vital part of a volume group. (Otherwise you may erase the other disks as well. if unmirrored)" Google suggests mac-fdisk. But the cd doesnt seem to have that. Bug or feature? 10.0: Amarok issues: freezes when handled & won't play files with odd charachters

Just installed SuSE 10. Amarok, which was a fairly nice application in 9.3, will "freeze" for about 5, 10 seconds whenever I do anything, such as queue a track, add media, or use the sidebar. If a song is playing it will "pause" while the app is thinking about doing what it needs to. Is there anything I can do about this? It's incredibly annoying. I'm always queuing the next few tracks I want to listen to while it's playing and the little "freeze" routine in the new version just makes me unhappy. Another problem is that it won't play songs with unusual charachters in the ID3 tag, like a question mark: "What Child Is This?". never realized so many Christmas songs had questions marks in the title until now ;-) What's worse is it won't skip them, if just sits there claiming it's playing and never making sound, or moving on to the next track. Anyone else having these problems? XMMS plays all the files just fine, just like always. If I could get the Wake Up Alarm to compile on 10.0 I'd leave amarok alone and go back to XMMS. Latest Thunderbird and Firefox for SUSE?

Firefox 1.5 Final is released. I hope we will soon have a SUSE RPM to upgrade. Thunderbird 1.07 was released long ago but the SUSE FTP folders have only the 1.06 version. I presume the SUSE developers will release a SUSE RPM soon after the 1.5 Final version is released (- currently 1.5RC1 is out). Shriramana.

Grub suddenly crashed...

Hi all!! My SuSE 10.0 suddenly crashed. I have a dual booting machine and it gives me an "Error 16" when trying to load Grub. I booted from SuSE Linux CD and choosed "Resque System". Than I checked my partitions with command "cfdisk" so I noticed that my windows is on hda1 and hda5, and I have hda6 for Linux and hda7 for Linux Swap. When I mount for example "mount /dev/hda1 somefolder" or "mount /dev/hda5 somefolder" it goes well, but when I mount "mount /dev/hda6 somefolder" it says : "Mount: Operation Not Supported" Have anybody got some ideas? P.S. I installed Linux from DVD , but booted the resque from the 5CD versions CD1, maybe the problem is in that? Though I doubt it Thanks in advance

3DLabs Wildcat 4210 and X

Hello all! I just got a what i believe is a 3D Labs Wildcat card in a older SGI box. At least that is what the info on the machine said was in there... Can i get it to run anything than VESA 800x600? I cant seem to find any modules for that card. lspci shows: 01:00:00 VGA compatible controller: Intergraph Corporation Sun Expert3D-Lite Graphics Accelerator (rev 64) SaX2 says its a vesa card. KDE and GNOME There has been a lot of debate over the last few days in the media and on message boards about what is happening regarding GNOME vs. KDE at Novell. Here's the situation. All future enterprise-class Linux product releases, including Novell Linux Desktop, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Novell Open Enterprise Server, will continue to ship with both the GNOME and KDE desktop environments. In upcoming versions of Novell enterprise applications, the default desktop environment will be GNOME. When customers install Novell Linux products, they will be given the option to choose either the GNOME or KDE environment during the installation process. Go the list again, and emphasize that your data is precious, and also give as much info as possible. You said you see only a portion of the files in your Linux files system. Which partitions do you see, which dirs do you see? Do they appear to be OK obviously damaged? Many on the list have the expertise to help. Respond thoughtfully to their questions. Because your data is precious, I will bow out on trying to be helpful. **CAVEAT** You may want to backup your precious data before you boot or do anything to the Linux OS or before you change any Linux files -- or before you change any other OS files if you are multi-booting. However, some routers to block ICMP. But if this is on the same subnet, the router is out of the picture. Couldn't tell if it was by this statement; 4: The SuSE machine's ping command worked perfectly on a regular network, pinging Windows & *nix computers and various hardware routers without any difficulty. What did he mean by *regular network*? At any rate, I was just offering up a suggestion that maybe this device was dropping packets, not necessarily his router. The router I had dropped traceroute packets from my Linux boxes, but not from my DOS/Windows boxes. The firmware update list said it would fix ping and traceroute data gram issues. I am curious to see if he can 'traceroute' from his Suse box to the device he is having trouble with. ~James

OT: Switch settings for a COMPAQ 1400 VA UPS unit?

Hello all. This is a bit OT but as it is a prestep for a server setup... I have obtained a COMPAQ 1400VA ups with some kind of monitoring output via a RS-232 type jack on the back. There is also 8 dip-switches to play with. There was no manual or documentation with it, so i have no idea what the switches do, or what pins carries what signal. Has anyone any info on this? Tried Googling, but came up with nothing. SuSE 10.0 Command Completion Dumbed Down

Hi, Has anyone noticed how much stupider command completion is in SuSE 10.0 than it was in 9.3? The old one knew, e.g., about user and group names when you were typing a chown or chgrp command. It knew how to complete tar archive names to the point of knowing the difference between .tar.gz and .tar.bz2 based on the presence of the 'z' or 'j' options. It knew about directories when the command was directory-specific. Etc. I'd really like to get the old fancy behavior back, 'cause I found it significantly convenient in everyday use. None of the files I could readily identify as being related to command completion appear to be significantly different between 9.3 and 10.0, so presumably I'm looking in the wrong place. Alternatively, I could have inadvertently changed some configuration option or a default may have changed. Anyway, if anyone knows about this, I'd really appreciate being clued in. Thanks. KDE 3.5 Image Gallery bug

There's a small bug in KDE 3.5 but I am not sure who to report it to because it appears to be a SUSE problem and not a KDE one. When you run Tools->Create Image Gallery Konqueror chokes on the images.html file that is output because of the following line in the source: <meta name="GENERATOR" content="KDE Konqueror KImgallery plugin version 3.5.0 Level "a" "/> Note the misquoted "a" at the end of the tag. Firefox appears to ignore this, Konqueror renders the file terribly. Where is this sort of thing reported? Thanks Craig

Dumb LVM question

All, With SUSE 10.0 (lvm 2), how do I kill any and all snapshots. With SuSE 9.0 (lvm 1) it was "vgscan -r". I need to be able to do this with a script, so I'm hoping lvm 2 has a way to kill all snapshots without knowing their names, etc. If not, I guess I can script up something to do the job. KDM Login Screen Options

I have just updated my 9.3 machine whihc took me about 4 hours of google time searching for the most odd dependencies (I really wish Novell would do something about all the dependencies) I skipped the kdebindings3-python package it will then scream about that kdevelop also needs kdebindings3-python just delete kdevelop which takes care of the whole problem, if you got amarok installed then remove it before you start the upgrade. Onstream ADR SCSI tape on OpenSuse 10

Hi folks, I'm using OpenSuSE 10.0 on a PIII machine which has a SCSI Onstream ADR 30 internal drive. Under SuSE 7.0-9.0 I used to make backups of the /home directory using the following command: tar cvf - /home | buffer -s 32k -m 32M -B -t -o /dev/nosst0 Since installing the OS 10.0 the same command gives me an error like: buffer (writer): write of data failed: Success bytes to write=32768, bytes written=4096, total written 257536K I have tried a different approach using the 'dd' command and i get: #dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=/dev/nosst0 bs=32768 dd: writing `/dev/nosst0': No space left on device 8049+0 records in 8048+0 records out 263720960 bytes (264 MB) copied, 8.96745 seconds, 29.4 MB/s It seems to me like now there is a (buffer ???) limitation of ~260MB of data that can be written on the tape. I've tried with 5 different tapes that I usually use bot all of them give the same errors. The 'cat /proc/scsi/sci' gives this output: Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 04 Lun: 00 Vendor: OnStream Model: SC-30 Rev: 1.05 Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 None of the 'mt -f /dev/nosst0 status/rewind/reten' works.I have the following software versions: Linux 2.6.13-15.ck6.SUPER.1-default #1 Tue Sep 13 14:56:15 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux tar-1.15.1-9 buffer-1.19-711 mt_st-0.7-423. CHGRP and CHOWN BUG with LDAP and SuSE 9.3

Hi all, I made tests with LDAP in SuSE 9.3 and find a problem: "chgrp" and "chown" fails when changing ownerships from a LDAP group with more than 50 users, Yast Online Update don't report any correction or comments to this problem ! A friend made a nss_ldap compilation from source and the problem was solved, but I did a stop in NSCD daemon and the problem returns !!! I could not try in other SuSE versions like SLES 9 and OpenSuSE 10, but I can do it in next days and I will report in this list. Anyone had this problem ??? Maybe this is a bug from "Core Utils" or "NSS_LDAP" ?? Thanks All ! Roberto C. Duarte

YaST "system services" hangs

When I bring up the "System Services" item (runlevels) in YaST, he hangs when he gets to cron. This is during the initialization, when the "Enabled" column is being populated (i.e. changed from "???" to "Yes" or either "No"). Cron is running and can be restarted with "rccron restart" (I put an entry in the crontab and it went off). Printing problem

Hi guys, I added my old Deskjet 610C to my SUSE 10.0 system (was in for a service). When trying to print I nothing happens, just some stuff in the logs. Google has not yielded much. Any ideas? How to? - Doing a clean install from multiple sources simultaneously

This question seems quite similar to lots of other questions I've seen, but I believe this is different - I have the SUSE 10.0 GM DVD with me (both on disc and as ISO on HDD) and I've downloaded KDE 3.5 and OOo 2.00. For some reasons I would like to do a clean install after wiping my root partition (home is separate). But I don't want to install KDE 3.41 which came with SUSE 10 (IIRC). Same goes for OOo. Or will you just say "install whatever comes with SUSE 10.0 and then upgrade from your local RPMs"? Shriramana.

Loading onto USB devices: Any Developments?

I use SuSE 10 and XFCE4. I just loaded 16 MB onto a usb device and it took a very long time. I know that this is a bug that Novell is working on. Cyrus IMAP - Non-local passwords

Hi, I'm setting up Cyrus IMAP on Suse 10.0. I found out how to set up mailboxes using cyradm, have 2 set up so far. One is the same name as a normal login user, and the other is not a login user. Cyrus accepts the login password of the normal login user. How do I set the password on the non-login user to access this user mailbox only? Also, how do I set Cyrus up to only accept connections over imaps (port 993)? Many thanks, Jim Flanagan

SUSE 10, wireless and default routes and such

This is on a laptop. How wireless interfaces work on non-portable computers is, I think, a different matter altogether. I installed SUSE 10 while disconnected from my LAN and all was well. Wireless cam up on boot, I got IP address etc, updated resolve.conf and set routes and life was good as far as those things go. I then reinstalled, while attached to LAN by wire and air, and now I can get an IP address, but the other things don't happen. I've used find and grep and vim till I'm blue in the face and I don't see what to change. Yast doesn't give me any options that I can find, and I can't find any likely references to resolv.conf or the various interfaces I've used. Please tell me, what do I change? The most desired behaviour is this: If wire is plugged in, it's configured with IP address etc, routes are set up and resolv.conf is reconfigured. If wireless is plugged in, it's configured with IP address etc, local routes are set up. If wire is not plugged in, then all routes are set up and resolv.conf is reconfigured. If two (or more) wireless devices work, the fastest is configured with default routes and resolv.conf is reconfigured, if there is no wire. Just for the moment, I will settle for wireless working as my primary interface (as it is).

SuSe 10.0 - System Hanging on Install

Hi everyone, I'm a relatively new Linux user, trying to install SuSe 10.0 (I'm installing SuSe on my brother's recommendation). I downloaded the ISO files, burned the images to CD, and started the fresh install. I got through installation setup on disc 1, but when it reboots (with disc 1 still in the drive), and I choose "boot from disc" to continue the install, the system hangs after starting the HAL daemon (I don't get into any graphical interface). I tried restarting without the disc, which worked fine...until I got to the next step of the install, where I was instructed to insert disc 2. When I do that, the system hangs completely. Can't switch to another console, ctrl + alt + del does nothing... The support portal lists a possible fix, telling me to manually eject the CD and that SuSe will detect it and instruct me to re-insert the disc. This does not happen for me. Even after going through emergency CD removal, the system remains hung. Please help! -Myles

Hi experts, I'd like to ask for a bit of help with using id3v2. My mp3 files have names in form 'author_author__song_name.mp3' and don't have id3 tag at all. I'm trying to get author and song name to id3 tag from file name like this: ls *.mp3 | xargs -n1 -i basename \{\} .mp3 | xargs -n1 -i id3v2 -t `ls *.mp3 | basename \{\} .mp3 | awk -F__ '{print $1}'` -A Greatest_Hits_80s -g Pop {}.mp3 This does not produce what I would expect and title is "author_author__song_name" instead of "author_author". When I try ls *.mp3 | xargs -n1 -i basename \{\} .mp3 | awk -F__ '{print $1}' or ls *.mp3 | xargs -n1 -i basename \{\} .mp3 | awk -F__ '{print $2}' I get author or song_name as expected. Setting up redundant file servers

I've set up a Linux file server for the municipal offices of my town (as a volunteer consultant and Linux evangelist). It's working fine -- Samba makes it look like a Win machine to the rest of the world. But now I'm interested in setting up a second machine as a redundant backup to the first one. The intent is that if one goes down, the other one will take over with little or no lost data and the shift will be imperceptible to the network users. What software should I be looking at to accomplish this? Paul

Occassional freezing on open suse 10

Hello, I've been using open suse for a couple of days now, and I feel there are some stability issues on my PC. The PC locks up occasionally when logging in or out of a KDE session. The mouse curser moves, but no access to keyboard, and I cannot switch to a terminal using alt-F switch. I also found the system locked up after I let it running overnight, only see a static picture of the screensaver on, with no response. I have applied all the latest updates. My hardware is AMD 2800, 512 MB RAM, Nvidia2 based graphics card, and a Maudio 7.1 sound card. I wish to believe this a hardware problem, but XP runs smooth on this machine. Is there any way to lookup cause of crash in any log files after a reboot? Thanks, Shibu

workaround for /dev/pilot that's out to lunch?

Hi All, I find that after a few [days, uses, lunar cycles??] my /dev/pilot device stops appearing when I hit the sync button on my palm cradle. Sometimes it's the palm itself, and a soft reset fixes it, but much of the time the only cure is to reboot my SuSE 9.3 system. That's rather a nuisance. Curiously the rest of the USB system continues to work. I can't tell if this is something to do with udev, the USB system (unlikely) or something else but it's certainly a pain. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to restart the USB/udev parts of the system so I can perhaps kick /dev/pilot back to life without a full restart?
