My current box is a K7 950Mhz used for development. Opensuse 10 runs quite well and is VERY stable. Suse-10 3gp Card

I have recently acquired a Vodafone Novatel merlin 3gp card and getting it working on cellular network has been quite a problem. However it is now working and I can connect to cellular network at 384kbs. However I have problems with routing. My laptop has both a network card, and wifi. Eth0 Eth1. Although the Novatel card sets up its own DNS servers in my resolv.conf and gives me an ip for the session, the laptop gets confused and tries to resolve dns via the network card eth0. The only successful resolution is if I go into Yast and set the cards at start on manual. However that means a config change again before I can use wifi or the network card. I have tried using ifconfig eth0 down before using the Novatel card but that does not seem to work correctly. Has anyone got any suggestions how to deal with this other what I do above ------------------- Ron Wilson God made everything out of nothing, but the nothingness shows through. LVM problem

Hello Suse People, and Merry Chistmas to you all. I have decided to install SuSE 10. This time around I want to use LVM to manage my partitions. Tired of running out of space. Having trouble setting up my partitions. If I accept my present partition table I can create an LV and put those physical volumes into it. However, I want to delete one and change others. So when I do that I can't create the LV. It tells me I have to create a partition, do not format it, and make sure it is designated 0x8e. Must have done that 50 times. It will not pick up the other PV's. I have read and followed the admin manual over and over. Downloaded some howto's from the web after doing google searches, and I cannot make this thing do what I want. Could it be a YAST problem??? Anyway, if anyone can give me a tip or two and/or direct me to a document for Dummies I would be very grateful. Bob S. .

SPAM: Subnet Access Problems

Folks, I'm having a dhcp server problem, and I hope you can point in the direction of a solution, or where I can go to find one. My problem is that I cannot get an IP address from my server for any of the laptop or PC devices that I have. I have a small LAN that sits behind a Linksys router/switch that serves as a firewall and NAT router. I have a server running SUSE Pro 9.3 with three NICs. One NIC allows the server to face the Internet through the Linksys. The other two NICs run subnets off this server, and their devices must access the Net through this server. My dhcpd.conf file is added below, as a quotation. On one subnet, I have a Win2k PC, and on the other subnet, I have a laptop that is dual bootable under SUSE Pro 9.3 and WinXP. What happens is the following. When I hard wire IP addresses to these devices, with the IP addresses coming from within each interface's network (that is, the laptop on the .3.0 subnet gets hardwired to .3.2; each hard wired address, though, is excluded from each subnet's scope to avoid conflicts), then the devices get access to the Internet (although they do not get name resolution for LAN devices--I cannot ping the server, for instance, by name from the PC or the laptop. I know I have a DNS server problem, too, but unless these turn out to be related issues, I'd prefer to focus on the dhcp problem for now). With this setup, I can ping by IP address each of the three NICs from each device, but I cannot ping any device on the other subnet (i.e., my PC cannot ping my laptop), and neither can my server ping any subnet device. However, when I allow dynamic address assignment, no device (including the laptop as SUSE or as WinXP) can get an address--"dhcp server unavailable." When my wife boots up her laptop, which is not part of this LAN, but sits outside of it (i.e., cabled directly to the Linksys), with my dhcp server running on my SUSE server, she gets an IP address that is from the scope of my dhcp server (which is separate from the scope of the Linksys, which otherwise assigns addresses). However, when she has my server's assigned address, she has no Internet access. I believe that the only way she can get an address from my server is by coming in from the outside through the Linksys. I appreciate any help I can get. VGA out of range error message

I've already complained about this, and I will once more. I have repeatedly encountered difficulties installing SuSE 9.3 and 10 on a system with a TFT screen (Sony and Samsung, so I think might/will happen with most TFT's). You get that vga out or range error message which makes it impossible for a newcomer to install SuSe without tinkering with parameters such as vga=[insert your valie here]. I continue to think that this is unacceptable for a linux distribution you pay good money for, and please don't come up with silly arguments like: this si the essence of linux, you've got to be ready to invest browsing docs, and the like. A friend of mine has just come over with her computer, running SuSe 9.2, and a serious problem: The system won't boot, and complains about reiserfs corruption. After trying all kinds of variations on reiserfschk, she tried --rebuild-tree, without having made a backup of her files (she's a journalist, so it's pretty important). Reiserfschk completed, but the machine still won't boot, so she brought it to me. I tried to boot after connecting a keyboard and a mouse and a Sony TFT screen, and yes, I got the dreaded vga out of range message. I tried boot options vga=vesa, vga=792, vga=791 and many more, to no avail. Esc twice booted in text mode, and I could see where the reiserfschk fails. I then tried to rescue her data using a Knoppix 3.4 in German I had from some time ago, and hey presto, it booted straight into kde, without any silly vga out of range error messages, and I was connected to the internet and could browse her reiserfs partition and burn a dvd with her data without intervening at any moment. If Knoppix can do it, why can't SuSE? FX

Firefox questions

Hi gang. Not sure if this has been answered already, if so I couldn't find the answer. I upgraded myself to 1.5 downloading the tar ball from mozilla.org and extracting it into my home dir and been using it that way. Extensions work, etc... except for sime silly reason, java does not. It acts like java is not installed, yet I know it is. I guess it can't find the plugin, so anyone know how I teach it where the plugin is? or move it to the right place? -- David Crouch

Network Connectivity Problem

Folks, I'm having a problem with my LAN, and I'm sure it's something I'm doing that's utterly brain dead that I haven't found, yet. One PC can't get connectivity even into its subnet on the LAN, much less via that LAN onto the Net. I'm running SUSE Pro 9.3 on an Intel server that has two NICs on the motherboard, and a third NIC installed later as a daughter board. When I first set this up, all three NICs had direct access to the Net through a separate Linksys router serving also as a firewall, so I believe the NICs and the cabling, at the hardware level, are functional. I have since rearranged my LAN into two subnets (using the same cabling as earlier). I have one NIC facing the Net through the Linksys, with NIC's address set to 192.168.1.2. The other two NICs each run a subnet (one on .3.1 and the other on .2.2). I have a laptop dual bootable with SUSE Pro 9.3 and WinXP on the 3.1 subnet, and I have a Win2k PC on the 2.2 subnet. From the central server, I can get onto the Net. From the laptop running either SUSE or XP, I can get on the Net, although I get no local (LAN-based) name resolution (e.g., I've aliased the NICs in /etc/hosts on the server, but I can't ping these names from the laptop--I get unk host. My server is running a DNS server; I think that's a separate problem that I need to resolve later). From the laptop, I can ping all three NICs on the server by IP address. My Win2k PC, when plugged into the 2.2 NIC on the server, has no connectivity to the Net. Indeed, there is no connectivity at all--the lights on the NICs (both on the PC and on the server) all remain dark. When I plug the PC directly into the Linksys (which was the PC's original configuration), I get (back) onto the Net. However, while plugged into the Linksys, I can ping only the server by IP address--trying to ping the server's other two NICs (the ones on .2.2 and .3.1), I only get request timed out errors. What am I doing wrong? How can I get my PC onto the server via its 2.2 NIC? Then I can begin to attack my name resolution problem. Thanks for your help. If you want some specific information, you can enter text in the search box where the asterisk is. In the drop down box show Novell Linux Desktop, you can also search on other product offerings including the current SuSE Linux and older versions. FYI, NLD is the business desktop offering from Novell as part of the Open Enterprise Server product channel and evaluation copies are available but are not in the retail channel or on OSS portal either. There are two places to look (if this idea works for you at all); they go together. You should have a mime.convs file, typically in /etc/cups. Toward the end of that file is the line application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0 - Comment this line out. It's typically commented out until you add a cups printer under specific conditions (typically related to setting up a printer under Samba). In the same location as the above file should be the file mime.types. Toward the end of this file is the line application/octet-stream Comment out this line, as well. Hope this helps. Thanks for that input -- I don't really have a choice in this matter, and given our company's position, we believe in the new products that Western Digital is producing, which are focused on the enterprise market (Raptors and Raid Edition) -- we are agnostic on the particular drives with which we are booting. Truthfully, we have seen few issues besides expected bumps with new products (for the Raptors and Raid Editions), and WD has responded extremely well on those fronts. On the 2.5" drive, they have recommended that we not use it in that application. problems with 'application/octet-stream'

I keep getting alerts with the following message: Could not find mime type application/octet-stream when starting Konquerer, when logging in, or when starting Kaffeine, but only as one particular user. The only changes I've made recently was trying to create a file assocation for Scribus save files. After dissatisfaction with my attempts, I deleted the new assocation. As far as I can remember I haven't made any changes to my configurations other than that. It's aggravating and is seriously impairing system performance. Any helpful ideas for a relative newbie?

Thx for your response. I was thinking about that too ! (Infact I was thinking about a concept PC on disk. Which will have my fav. OS and data on a dvd-rw, which i can put in on any PC/MAc/*UNIX/XXX... box and run/use my own thing!) but here specific to SuSe 10 'Live-DVD' I wanted to knwo if i can:- 1. add/remove packages? 2. add/remove patches? 3. change config ? 4. run/use common unix utilities? excuse me for my limited knowledge of the product. actually i recently came to know about "Live-CD/DVD" concept ! If you burned to a re-writable disk then you may be able to tinker but that is not the way it is meant to be used. It is meant to popped in and run as it is. One thing you could do would be to plug a USB-capable external hard drive into your laptop. Then you could practice with the Linux DVD to your heart's content, saving all to the USB HD and not disturb your Windows set up at all. Of course external HDs are slower than internals, and laptops are slower than PCs--the accumulated slowness would be perceptible.... Whoa! Not to offend anyone but the point of this person's complaint was not that Knoppix worked or if the SuSE Live DVD would work but why not SuSE? The probable solution to this would have been to recommend that s/he bring up a terminal session, do an Init 3 if necessary and then run sax2 to try to have s/he's video configuration set properly. Has the time problem been fixed in 10.0 yet. I have been pushing Suse as the desktop favorite for Linux , but sure looks bad when you can't get the correct time. Jim

strange problem in krusader

Hello all: I've got this strange problem: My amule download got corrupted since a computer freezing. Now when I check the Temp folder where amule stores their part, part.met and part.met.bak files the newest krusader version that I built from CVS source shows file #.part.met with an irreally large size (TB) and date (1935). An older version of krusader, 1.60.0 shows a different irreal size (TB) and another not-real date (2004). The strange thing is if I do an ls -l in a terminal this file is not shown at all. There are several ways of searching coolsolutions. One is using the search engine with all its options. The other is to pull a list of all the submissions to the coolsolutions site. I will tell you that if you use the Novell Linux Desktop (NLD) coolsolutions list, you will get the most suggested solutions and helps that will work on both NLD and SuSE 10.0, mileage will vary. OT: I really get upset with Novell in that they know how to make NLD work including video player support (Totem) but ship a crippled SuSE because of "licensing concerns." Linus once said that Novell might be the greatest thing to have happen to Linux but IMO, they may also be the ones to break it. FYI, I bleed Novell Red, corpusules are shaped in the red N logo. A Novell CNE6 and 10 year consecutive attendee of Novell's Brainshare, 2006 is the first year I won't go so I won't make it 11. I am also a long time user/advocate of SuSE, I don't remember if I have any 5.x but I have bought every retail version of SuSE since 6.0.
