mount error: invalid argument (smbfs)

In 9.3 with 2.6.11.4-21 kernel /var/log/messages tells me "kernel: smbfs: Unrecognized mount option noauto" when I try to mount this samba share manually. To mount the share, I must edit fstab to remove the noauto option, mount, then put it back after mounting so that it won't automount on a reboot. Mandriva 2006 with 2.6.12 kernel gives me no such foolishness with the exact same fstab entry, "... smbfs ro,fmask=664,noauto 0 0". How can I fix this? -- Jesus Christ is the reason for the season. Wierd, innit? I noticed, too, that SUSE shipped 1.4 instead of 5.0. It took a bit of work to find then install the 5.0 version of the JRE/JDK. I trying to setup a SUSE 10.0 box to allow remote graphical login. I've set the yast check box to true and I'm in init state 5. I'm not running the firewall currently. The difference is in structure -- Linux is a different choice -- if you want these type of Microsoft-y things -- such as a faster *perceived* application load time, you can probably achieve that on your own, by -- perhaps getting firefox and OOo to load themselves when X starts up. As far as making some of the functionality available to the user prior to load completion, you will probably need to talk to the coders. /prognostication on As a business -- Microsoft had done some very good things -- they have addressed some major pain points for end users. As desktop OS's go, XP isn't half bad (maybe only 30% bad) -- although for myself, I much prefer Linux. The thing is -- they haven't done anything *technologically* superior, per se -- the problem you complain about is about more about customer perception. When the market is right, the likes of Novell and RedHat (etc... possibly a third party specializing in such things -- like crossover office ...) will introduce distros or packages which tune a desktop this way. When that happens, there will be parity for ease of use in the desktop market, and Linux will explode on the desktop. Linux will not take over the desktop, most likely -- but it will make a big dent. MS will remain dominant on the desktop as long as they are a viable company -- the difference will be that there will be real choice for Joe-end-user. Probably, Windows will still grow on the desktop as well as Linux -- in absolute numbers, because global penetration of PCs will continue to increase -- MS will lose relative ground for a while until the market equilibrates. Windows will probably stagnate in the enterprise market, since (mostly) only slow-moving bureaucracies that are already entrenched in Windows will continue to buy MS server products. MS is pushing hard to be on the handheld -- and I think they are doing well there, too -- If that doesn't muddy up the water, I think you'll see MS expose some of their source (I'm not sure if it will be OS source, Office source -- or what, but I suspect OS -- although it may be an old revision, or a separate tree from their actual products). I think the reason they will do this, is that the market will have proven to them that you can make money with an open source model -- if it is structured right -- the pressure to do so, will be their desire to focus on their more profitable elements, and the increased need to either interoperate or lose *all* of the business (not just os or app or whatever) when they *force* businesses to choose. /prognostication off <snip> Well, I smell doo -- I, indeed, stepped in it. PROBLEM WITH TAPE HARDWARE COMPRESSION

Hi!!! I've got an HP SURESTORE DAT 40 on my SUSE LINUX ENTERPRISE SERVER 8 BOX SP3. The tapes I use are marked 20/40GBYTE. But I can only make backup up to 20G, whereas on my ALPHA server with tru64 unix, I can save up to near 40 Gbytes using the dev file "/dev/rmt0h" (for tru64 V 4F) or "/dev/tape/tape0_d1" (for tru64 V 5.1B). I try to enable compression using the command "mt -f /dev/st0 datcompression 10", this command achieved succefully but nothing. I try to use the /dev/st0m or /dev/st0a, but these devices files seem not to be associated to physical device. So how can I perform backup with hardware compression? Please help

Can't locate Apache/Constants.pm

I am on 9.2 box - got src apache2 rpm extracted (complains if you dont have that) , and headers rpm and it compliants about Constants.pm which is part of mod_perl-1.29 > Apache::Constants Mod perl (from rpm) is installed too - how might i get this module in perl to make ?, anybody here done it, the header file httpd.d looks good. Any hints very welcome

I have a problem with wget, I use: wget -r --load-cookies ~/.mozilla/firefox/rlvrthe8.default/cookies.txt --html-extension --mirror --convert-links --backup-converted --save-cookies --keep-session-cookies -p http://inter-data.bai.nu <http://inter-data.bai.nu/> My problem is, I can get wget to login with user and passwd via cookies.txt that work OK, but when wget have to follow the links it is missing the login, and I do not get price and stock level, and I am unable to update my shop. My vendor has got a new website and it woked fine with the old one, but not the newone her. So if anybody have a solution on this I will preciate to know. Regards Tage Denmark

Then do us a favor. Write to the original authors about what works and what doesn't. Storyboard it if possible. Show them what needs to be changed. Sometimes the next great idea comes from the users, not the programmer. Hi, I am attempting to set up a webserver as a file point for some *.iso images and vmware player filesystems. I am having some difficulty in making very large files available (>2Gb) as they are not seen in the autoindex list and error out when trying to directly download them. Anyone know if there is a workaround enabling this apart from getting apache2.2? System: SuSE10.0 professional, 32bit i686, filesystem involved is ext3 Mark

Hi guys, Does anyone have this notebook? I have the PY416EA model - it is a Turion64 1.8ghz, with Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 (PCIE). I'm having a few problems: 1. Onboard Wireless: Broadcom BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] - it doesn't have a linux driver. I set up ndiswrapper, and that works fine, but it is junk - poor reception, poor performance, unstable. But I can live with that, for now. The problem is, when I do network intensive stuff, like copy big files, the notebook sometimes reboot. Not reset, just a normal reboot as if I typed "reboot" in the cli. 2. Booting hangs at the "loading keymap" or something like that bit. When that happens I press the wireless/bluetooth button twice (switch off + switch on) and it continues to boot normally. 3. PCMCIA - doesn't work at all. It's a normal well supported controller, uses the yenta driver. But when you stick something into it, it simply doesn't pick it up. I really want to use my Netgear PCMCIA wireless card (see #1 above). I have verified with a knoppix CD that the socket does work. In SUSE, I've fiddled around, tried various combinations of inserting and removing modules and restarting coldplug, dbus etc and got it working once, but I could never repeat that. The relevant lspci info: CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCIxx21/x515 Cardbus Controller 4. ACPI doesn't work well. the CPU heats up to about 75 degrees celcius before the fan comes on. Sometimes the fan doesn't switch off. The different powersave profiles doesn't work correctly either. On "performance" it sticks to 1800mhz, on anything els it sits on 800mhz. I would expect that on "dynamic" it should raise the CPU speed if I compile something or do something CPU intensive, but it doesn't. I have fiddled endlessly with the options, modifying the profiles, to no avail. All of the above problems exist in both the 32bit and 64bit versions of SUSE 10.0. One more question: The notebook has a biometric sensor. Has anyone worked with such hardware? Could you please point me to good documentation? It would be nice to play around with this too. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Hans P.S. A few observations, for anyone in the market: this particular model is a lot of computer for the money. Display is 1400x1050 (only on the top model) and very clear. The modem is an ATI device and is supported (by alsa, of all things). Network is gigabit and works well. Performance is very strong, especially when compiling stuff. And lastly, the sound chip, also ATI, is by far the best sound I've heard from any onboard sound. It has the sweetness and roundness of the Soundblaster Live cards. Very very nice! If the wireless doesn't bother you (the only non-SUSE problem I have), it's a great buy, good value for money, and a very nice and solid notebook.

[SLE] NFS file locking problem between SuSE 10 Client and 9.3 server

Hello, i´ve some NFS filelocking problem between my SuSE 10.0 based clients and the 9.3 based server. /home is located on the server (with SuSE 9.3 and a recent kernel (2.6.15)). The clients are equiped with SuSE 10.0 and the default 2.6.13 kernel. Applications which are using NFS filelocking on /home (examples: eclipse, skype, banshee) are not working. The /etc/hosts file does not match what my router-based dhcp server has assigned to the machines. I hear a collective DUH! coming from the throngs on suse-e regarding the hosts file! Yet... I just manually changed the /etc/hosts file on the machines to reflect the correct ip's and ran a test. CUPS up and printing fine from machine #2 with OOo, but not from any other apps! Here's an error message I get when trying to print my e-mail from Kontact: "An error occurred while retrieving the printer list: Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: host not found." Here's the lpstat results from machine #2: bernd@suse:~> lpstat -t lpstat: Unable to connect to server: No route to host How can the /etc/hosts file be modified to always match? How can I print using apps aside from OOo?

I would like to install "certified" distribution of Linux, which are recommended by Borland. * Red Hat 7.1 * SuSE 7.2 * Mandrake 8.0 Where can I find these distributions for download? suse 9.3 / postfix / multiple domains

Hello, sorry for posting this topic prior to scanning the mail archives for im short on time since i was given only 2 days to host my domains elsewhere :P im currently running suse 9.3 with which im very happy. now for starters i need to configure postfix so that it would work in the following order: my server name is: e.g. smtp.mydomain.com receive mail for multiple domains. e.g. myserver.mydomain.com mydomain.com myhouse.com mycar.com mybike.com i have only few users so i am not in need of a heavy setup such as using db as a backend etc. i simply want to remap addresses the following way. i want to have multiple aliases for the users forwarding to the system local account (yes i will be creating separate accounts on the system for different users) donald(a)myhouse.com -> donald(a)mydomain.com donald(a)mycar.com -> donald(a)mydomain.com donald(a)mybike.com -> donald(a)mydomain.com donald.duck(a)mybike.com -> donald(a)mydomain.com duck.donald(a)mybike.com -> donald(a)mydomain.com outgoing mail should appear as donald.duck(a)mycar.com later on i will be adding amavis and spamassin, but on this short notice i would be very happy to get mail comming in without bouncing. so in short, can you guys give a step by step guide on what i need to do? regards RutePoint PS: my dns is all setup and ready and the local shell accounts have been allready created -- ___________________________ If computers were made in heaven, would they be perfect? ___________________________

A new package 'wine' showed up in the fwdg WINE apt-repository very recently. I presume it is the latest and greatest. Yet the package managers identify _July's_ package 'wine' as listed in the BASE apt-repository as "the version which updates all others". Methinks the BASE apt-repository 'wine' package is mis-dated. mikus

PDF - FireFox question

Using SuSE10.0 Retail version from Novell, FireFox 1.5. PDFs Documents only show grey screen. Following Jerry Feldmans procedure I do not find a plugin folder in /opt/MozillaFireFox folder. I find the following: nppdf.so usr/lib/browser-plugins/ Symbolic link usr/lib/firefox/plugins Symbolic Link /usr/X11R6/lib/Acrobat7/Browser/intellinux file Do I remove both the symbolic links? Also running the plugin install script says it cannot find nppdf.so. Do I need to run the script as root? I assume the howto file wants me to use /opt/ MozillaFirefox/lib as the install path. Thanks for any pointers in advance. -- Russ
