apt-get on suse 9.3

I installed 9.3 and am very happy with it. I am familiar wit the debian distributions and they use the debian package system, not RPM. I understand you can use apt-get on suse, is there a how-to on setting up apt-get and debian package system on suse?. One reason I want to use apt-get on suse is that I couldn't get kinternet to get on the internet wit dial-up. I used my debian system, libranet 3.0 to download pppconfig.deb and convert it to a .rpm package using alien and install it. I copied "pon" and "poff" from my libranet and installed them in /usr/bin. Ran pppconfig in suse 9.3 and now I can get on the internet I had this same problem on every suse version I tried to install. jozien

Win to 9.2 convert

Hello SuSE people, Been trying to convert my son from Windoz to Linux for several years now. Finally he had enough of the Windoz problems that he agreed to let me install my 9.2 on his machine. Popped in my 9.2 disk, the SuSE splash screen came up and then I got a message in a little square box that stated: "Out of Range." and gave the following numbers. "Hf46.4 Vf 86hz" and gave the proper ranges of, "30-80khz Hf & 55-75 khz Vf" So his monitor, a 17" lcd is evidently out of range. The machine froze at this point and would not proceed. Have never seen this before. Has anyone seen this before or can help me get around this? Related, or maybe not, and the final straw was, when he couldn't get past this "blue screen" message in W98. This was coincidentally ? or not ? right after he had installed a new additional DVD drive. The message was: An OE exception has occurred at 0028:00000002 in VxD ---This was called from 0028:C1C 33500 in VxD voltrack (04) blah blah,blah. Is this the same thing as what I saw in the SuSE install screen? (If you know or even care) Bob S. PS Am cross posting this to my local LUG here in South Florida. I know that is a no-no, But......Here is my chance. Need help!

Limitations of SuSe Linux 10 "Live DVD" !!

Hello, I am planning to use SuSe Linux 10 Live-DVD for practicing Linux. Although, I can install any version on my laptop and work, but I dont want to disturb/touch my 'Windows' laptop just for practicing Linux, then I heard of run-from-DVD Linux, and I want to try it. My question is: With Live-DVD can I do things like make/remove files/directories, change config of apps and OS, ifconfig, du, dk, vi, awk, perl... etc. Also, would I be able to install/remove packages and patches? (or simulate atleast) Please help me with your advice. A punto de tirar la toalla...

Hola usuarios de la lista. Estoy muy interesado en aprender más de Linux, deseo realmente dejar a Win XP de lado pero no encuentro las aplicaciones para reemplazarlas en Linux. En fin, quiero aprender más pero no se donde informarme, ¿me pueden pasar algún sitio donde me pueda documentar? ¿algún buen libro que me puedan recomendar? Recientemente traté de instalar un puño de codecs para los videos AVI, WMV o MOV, consegui todos los archivos recomendados de una lista pero nómas nada salio bien, edito audio en Windows, consegui un editor para Linux pero tampoco lo pude instalar; !muchísimas dependencias¡ (Estoy enterado que se utilizan privilegios de root para instalar) Se que se puede configurar que se utilicen o se busquen las mismas en la Internet, pero no tengo banda ancha, por lo que instalar algunos programas sería tardadísimo. Aquí es donde me viene la gran pregunta: ¿Realmente me conviene Linux? En los demás SO, todos los programas vienen completos aunque hay que pagar por ellos, no se les puede modificar, pero yo que realmente no se mucho o casi nada para su modificación pues es algo que no me viene. My current box is a K7 950Mhz used for development. Opensuse 10 runs quite well and is VERY stable. Suse-10 3gp Card

I have recently acquired a Vodafone Novatel merlin 3gp card and getting it working on cellular network has been quite a problem. However it is now working and I can connect to cellular network at 384kbs. However I have problems with routing. My laptop has both a network card, and wifi. Eth0 Eth1. Although the Novatel card sets up its own DNS servers in my resolv.conf and gives me an ip for the session, the laptop gets confused and tries to resolve dns via the network card eth0. The only successful resolution is if I go into Yast and set the cards at start on manual. However that means a config change again before I can use wifi or the network card. I have tried using ifconfig eth0 down before using the Novatel card but that does not seem to work correctly. Has anyone got any suggestions how to deal with this other what I do above ------------------- Ron Wilson God made everything out of nothing, but the nothingness shows through. LVM problem

Hello Suse People, and Merry Chistmas to you all. I have decided to install SuSE 10. This time around I want to use LVM to manage my partitions. Tired of running out of space. Having trouble setting up my partitions. If I accept my present partition table I can create an LV and put those physical volumes into it. However, I want to delete one and change others. So when I do that I can't create the LV. It tells me I have to create a partition, do not format it, and make sure it is designated 0x8e. Must have done that 50 times. It will not pick up the other PV's. I have read and followed the admin manual over and over. Downloaded some howto's from the web after doing google searches, and I cannot make this thing do what I want. Could it be a YAST problem??? Anyway, if anyone can give me a tip or two and/or direct me to a document for Dummies I would be very grateful. Bob S. .

SPAM: Subnet Access Problems

Folks, I'm having a dhcp server problem, and I hope you can point in the direction of a solution, or where I can go to find one. My problem is that I cannot get an IP address from my server for any of the laptop or PC devices that I have. I have a small LAN that sits behind a Linksys router/switch that serves as a firewall and NAT router. I have a server running SUSE Pro 9.3 with three NICs. One NIC allows the server to face the Internet through the Linksys. The other two NICs run subnets off this server, and their devices must access the Net through this server. My dhcpd.conf file is added below, as a quotation. On one subnet, I have a Win2k PC, and on the other subnet, I have a laptop that is dual bootable under SUSE Pro 9.3 and WinXP. What happens is the following. When I hard wire IP addresses to these devices, with the IP addresses coming from within each interface's network (that is, the laptop on the .3.0 subnet gets hardwired to .3.2; each hard wired address, though, is excluded from each subnet's scope to avoid conflicts), then the devices get access to the Internet (although they do not get name resolution for LAN devices--I cannot ping the server, for instance, by name from the PC or the laptop. I know I have a DNS server problem, too, but unless these turn out to be related issues, I'd prefer to focus on the dhcp problem for now). With this setup, I can ping by IP address each of the three NICs from each device, but I cannot ping any device on the other subnet (i.e., my PC cannot ping my laptop), and neither can my server ping any subnet device. However, when I allow dynamic address assignment, no device (including the laptop as SUSE or as WinXP) can get an address--"dhcp server unavailable." When my wife boots up her laptop, which is not part of this LAN, but sits outside of it (i.e., cabled directly to the Linksys), with my dhcp server running on my SUSE server, she gets an IP address that is from the scope of my dhcp server (which is separate from the scope of the Linksys, which otherwise assigns addresses). However, when she has my server's assigned address, she has no Internet access. I believe that the only way she can get an address from my server is by coming in from the outside through the Linksys. I appreciate any help I can get.
