'Smart' package installs channels

Today an update to 'smart' became available on SuSE. (I already had 0.41.) I installed it with apt-get. When I afterwards started 'smart --gui', it asked me about two of the *new* files installed in /etc/smart/channels -- their content did not match byte-for-byte with what I __already__ had in that directory (but had customized). [I told smart --gui to NOT accept the info in those two new files.] My question: Is it acceptable for 'configuration files' being installed by a package to "interfere" with the 'configuration files' (for the same resources) already existing in the system ? mikus p.s. The 'smart --gui' interface is TOO SIMPLIFIED. Having said "no -- do not use" to 'smart --gui' the FIRST time those two files appeared, I can afterwards find __NO__ way to "manipulate" those two files with 'smart --gui'. [Even the CLI 'smart channel --show' command cannot find the two new files, though they still *are* in the directory.] I can only change/delete those two new files with a text editor [and then if necessary, activate them using the CLI 'smart channel --add <filename>' command (which apparently bypasses some of the "sanity checks" that caused 'smart --gui' to ask me if it was o.k. to accept the new file) ].

how to avoid automatic turning-off of screen?

Hi everybody, After 4 Minutes the screen saver starts, but a certain time later the lcd monitor gets turned off (at least getting black), after moving the mouse it comes back again. How can I avoid this turing-off? In KDE I have turned the "energy save" mode to off. I have also unmarked all the suspend things in Yast. I use kde 3.5, have an Nvidia Gforce4 TI card, the Nvidia driver installed (with YOU) and "lsmod" says it's running (there's no logo screen as it was on Suse 9 but a short flash when starting X - maybe its just too fast to see...). ICH7-R SATA controller x Suse 9.2 (don't recognize disks)

Hi, I'm having trouble to install Suse 9.2 on Intel SE7230NH1-E. This motherboard have a ICH7-R SATA controller and Suse can't recognize the disks on legacy or enhanced (native) modes Have also tried to perform instalation whith acpi=off and/or noapic whith both modes (enhanced or legacy, whith/without raid enable) but no success... Thanks for any suggestion.... (sorry by english)

SPAM: dhcpd Doesn't Run

Folks, I'm running a 2-subnet LAN with SUSE Pro 9.3 as the server, which is also running a dhcp server, and a dual bootable WinXP/SUSE Pro 9.3 laptop on one subnet and a Win2k PC on the other. I'm unable to get IP addresses for the PC or the laptop; I've been wracking my brains over this for a few days now, and I could use some pointers. Using the PC as an example (I get the same results from the laptop, whether as XP or SUSE), the following is what I've been able to find (appended as quotations): a jobs request implies that the dhcpd is running: > ps ax | grep dhcp > 7735 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/dhcpd -chroot /var/lib/dhcp/ > -lf /db/dhcpd.leases -user dhcpd -group nogroup eth0 yet dhcping gets a "no answer" response when it's run. No, I am not concerned about saving any kind of data, to get it after a reboot, I can also use the USB stick - for creating practice directories/files/scripts, I can also mount a sub-dir on the stick under /usr and try to install some software... I know some UNIX so I guess I would know how to find my way(my knowledge of the subject, this list... etc.) - except where the OS does not allow - (for finding out those regions I have asked you all noble people, who have already tested the 'Live DVD/CD'). Since I would be training someone, I wanted a system that functions as a real one and also, has minimal potential to disrupt any working environment (like my XP installed on my laptop). I also did not want to buy a new box for practicing unix/linux or install a software on my laptop alongside xp (coz that involves some OS management and concerns if the trainee does something wrong! - hence always a delicate situation). Since the filesystems that save data from a software install are read-only you cannot install even small software packages. As stated by another poster you can save files to a flash-drive or usb mounted harddrive but saving any where else is fruitless. Atheros AR5212 crashes system on network restart

I got my sister an airlink.101 AWLH4030 which SuSE 9.3 identifies as a Atheros AR5212 802.11 abg NIC which is supposed to be linux compatible: http://linux-wless.passys.nl/query_hostif.php?hostif=PCI&zoek=hostif There is also an unconnected, BROADCOM NetXtreme BMC5751 GIGABIT PCI EXPRESS (ethernet nic), but it is not enabled in yast\Network Devices\Network card\. The AR5212 works, but every time the network is restarted the system hard freezes and can only be restarted with the BRS. (Big Red Switch). This happens with "ACTIVATE NETWORK DEVICES" when you attempt to edit device parameters using yast, or if you do /etc/init.d/network restart or a /etc/init.d/network stop followed by /etc/init.d/network start. Somehow the /etc/init.d/network start that runs at system startup does not crash the system, but if you restart it you get crash. It seems to crash when dhcp client is being started. The only way I have found to edit device parameters is to edit /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan-XXXXX changing Startmode to "manual". Reboot and the NIC will not be started. So you can do yast\Network Devices\Network card\ without getting a crash at "ACTIVATE NETWORK DEVICES" because you are not restarting the device. Then put STARTMODE back to "auto" and reboot again! Any ideas why the crashes on network restart with this wireless nic??
