Installing SUSE 10.0 on Toshiba laptop

I have a Toshiba 3490CT laptop with a blown Windows OS. I have a copy of SUSU 10.0 that I want to install on the laptop, but I can't get it to recognize the USB CD drive (all peripheral drives are external). I have tried using the boot menu, but that did not work. I also tried booting using Smart Boot Manager on floppy. It recognize the floppy drive, but still would not recognize the CD drive. I'm open for any suggestions....Thank you.

Hi Martin, I asked for clarification because I've never seen that behavior before, either. When I was first learning YaST and SUSE (SuSE), I once made the mistake of combining a kernel patch with a bunch of other updates in YOU. The system became erratic and I had a devil of a time fixing things up after a hard reset. I could be "all wet" here, but I think your's was a milder version of this 'computer gone crazy' syndrome. FWIW, I have had no more problems with kernel updates after I adopted the following procedure: 1. I close all desktop applications. 2. I install all of the other relevant patches. 3. When YOU is done, I open it again to install the kernel patch. 4. After it closes, I immediately reboot using: K Menu > Log Out > Restart Computer. This procedure seems to always work and I feel comfortable recommending it. BTW, I got a bit curious after reading your original post and looked at the documentation for a recent SUSE kernel update. It contained an example of using 'shutdown -r' to reboot the system afterwards. Was this description (instruction?) what led you to reboot using 'shutdown -r'? regards, - Carl

USB partition type and permissions

I've been testing a USB attached hard drive and noticed something peculiar. If I format the drive with Reiser or , only root can write to it. If I format FAT32, users can also write. Users can always read, no matter what format is used. It is not mounted with fstab. Any ideas as to why the difference? tnx jk

sit0 with nemo on 9.3

After an update from mainly KDE 3.4 to 3.5 I got suddenly an setup box for nemo. Never used it nor did I know it but it may be installed because I was interested to see what it would do. I let it do the default install and have now three rows of small monitors in my panel. Two for the two ethernet-cards on my computer and one with a red cross for sit0. Have googled and found out that it has something to do with tunneling and maybe with wireless which I do not have and IPv4 and IPv6. Could somebody give me a more complete insight and answer me if I can get rid of this sit0 without problems?

suddenly no sound

I really don't understand how this happens. I have installed a new video card. Have not even gotten to the point of being able to try and setup that thing yet but the video is at least working at basic level. The sound system however has stopped responding. When I installed the new BFG nVIDEA 6600 card, I had read about how newer video cards run pretty hot. And this one is overclocked, so I thought it a good idea to shift the sound card down one slot to move it away from the video card. I checked the BIOS and although I recall from 'the past' that most times a BIOS setup screen allowed assignment of IRQ's to certain slots on the board. But in this newer SOYO K7VM333 board, no such setting. The system now starts up with this error showing in the bootup sequence: Starting Sound Driver: emu10k1 done Restoring the previous Sound Setting: failed but continues to loadup KDE, and after the desktop starts to stabilize, I get this; Error amarok amaroK could not find any sound-engine plugins. It is likely that amaroK is installed under the wrong prefix, please fix your installation using: cd /path/to/amarok/source-code/ su -c "make uninstall" ./configure --prefix=`kde-config --prefix` && su -c "make install" More information can be found in the README file. For further assistance join us at #amarok on irc.freenode.net. I have not yet attempted to perform this task, since I think the problem is not with amarok but with the sound system at its most basic level. Normally I get the KMix icon in the tray. Now I do not. I tried to start the Control Center and when I choose Sound & Multimedia / Sound System, it starts with this error: Error KDE Control Module There was an error loading the module. The diagnostics is: libresmgr.so.0.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Possible reasons: An error occurred during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control module. You have old third party modules lying around. Check these points carefully and try to remove the module mentioned in the error message. If this fails, consider contacting your distributor or packager. So off I go to remove this errant libresmgr.so.0.1 since the system thinks it either orphaned or an old version...or have I misunderstood the error mssg.?... I used YaST to search for the term libresmgr and got no results. ?? Searching the system from / with all subdirectories... no results. ?? The system seems to complain about the presence of a file which doesn't exist. Also checking the SuSE Hardware Tool for Sound options and find that the sound card is not configured, showing removed. Nothing I did there seemed to help. I tried a lot of things here, various options for installation and setup of the sound card, and could not save settings and/or could not make the card recognized. So I shut down and moved the sound card back to the original slot. All remains the same with the alsa sound system still disabled, showing same error at bootup, but now the SuSE Hardware Tool does recognize the SoundBlaster card, yet it cannot save the config or setup info. Throws this error: An error occurred during the installation of SB AWE 64 The kernel module snd-emu10k1x for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. I know you gurus have some ideas where I should start and how to fix this mess. And maybe someone can offer some ideas/educated opinions about why such a mess was caused just by changing a video system hardware component? Among other things I'm curious about, I'd like to know why I can't swap PCI slots with this card and have it all still work just the same? For me, it isn't all about getting it working; its also about understanding why. Someone give me a push? I gotta get the sound working so I can start trying to setup the video card. Thanks! Where does Lisa fit?

Hi. Could somebody please explain to me where Lisa should fit, in the greater scheme of things... specifically a three or four machine home network behind a LinkSys router, where at least two machines will always be SuSE 10, one MAC OS X, and one sometimes Win 2K. I've read some about Lisa, but where I'm not clear is the overlap if one is using NFS, SAMBA or both. Or, more accurately, if one is attempting to get SAMBA or NFS to work. Does Lisa have a place in there (some useful, non-redundant functionality), or not? Does it conflict with any of the other approaches to network browsing/sharing? Is it a security issue (compared to, say, SAMBA)? I'm just looking for a general picture of when/where/why you'd want to use Lisa. It's been entirely off my radar screen until just recently. Problems with initrd after mkinitrd

Thanks in advance for any input: I have struggled with this annoyance for some time - thinking that it was either hardware or something I was doing wrong. But now with up to 40 machines all getting the same treatment, between 30 and 60 % will hang on initrd after I run mkinitrd. I have been using mostly Western Digital WD400VE (2.5" notebook drives with an adapter) but have also seen this occur with the WD400JB (the 3.5" variant). Since all the machines have the exact same build and I do the same thing to all of them, yet some of them work and some don't - I can't believe that I am making a fundamental mistake (and I don't believe I am). On the other hand, the numbers are way to high and consistent to be obviously hardware. My base system is a SuSE 9.3 distro (although I've seen it with 9.1 to some degree) in which I have included the opensource highpoint driver which has been compiled locally. The /boot is in the / partition which is formatted with reiserfs. I have the following modules listed in /etc/sysconfig/kernel for MKINITRD_MODULES: "reiserfs scsi_mod hptmv xfs". The most consistent fix we have found is the tedious process of tarring up "/" (from a rescue disk), copying it to another machine (usually at this stage the machines are unique enough, that we can't lose data), writing zeroes to the first few sectors with dd, re-partitioning the drive, copying the tarball back to the disk and untarring. This requires re-installing grub which sometimes produces a hang on loading stage1.5. We are going to go away from the 2.5" drive anyway, but for the meantime (and until we have time to re-work the existing ~200 machines), I have to deal with it - and I am concerned since I saw it on the 3.5" drives, anyway. Before I push this issue back to the disk manufacturer, has anyone seen this kind of behavior before, or can you offer me any insight into what may be causing this? Thank you very much, Patrick W.
