Setting up redundant file servers

I've set up a Linux file server for the municipal offices of my town (as a volunteer consultant and Linux evangelist). It's working fine -- Samba makes it look like a Win machine to the rest of the world. But now I'm interested in setting up a second machine as a redundant backup to the first one. The intent is that if one goes down, the other one will take over with little or no lost data and the shift will be imperceptible to the network users. What software should I be looking at to accomplish this? Paul

Occassional freezing on open suse 10

Hello, I've been using open suse for a couple of days now, and I feel there are some stability issues on my PC. The PC locks up occasionally when logging in or out of a KDE session. The mouse curser moves, but no access to keyboard, and I cannot switch to a terminal using alt-F switch. I also found the system locked up after I let it running overnight, only see a static picture of the screensaver on, with no response. I have applied all the latest updates. My hardware is AMD 2800, 512 MB RAM, Nvidia2 based graphics card, and a Maudio 7.1 sound card. I wish to believe this a hardware problem, but XP runs smooth on this machine. Is there any way to lookup cause of crash in any log files after a reboot? Thanks, Shibu

yast2 printer setup problem

This doesn't seem to be the same issue as covered in other threads I was able to find. When I try to use yast2 to configure my parallel port connected laser printer yast opens its printer window begins to read the driver database then the printer setup window just disappears. I have checked logs for errors and not found any. Instead it seems to be proceeding just fine according to /var/log/YaST2/y2log. A relatively vanilla install with the latest YOU updates and kde 3.5. Samsung ML1740 printer connected via parallel port. Any ideas where to look for clues? -- Time is the best teacher. Unfortunately it kills all its students.

SuSe 10 - Internet issues...

Sweet, I've finally got SuSe 10 up and running. I'm a rather inexperienced Linux user, so please, bear with me here. I can't (effectively) use the internet. I mean, technically, I've got perfect connectivity as far as I can tell. I can ssh into the other servers on the network, and I can even get to sites like google.com....well, sorta. See, I can't use the actual web address to get there. I've got to use the IP address. What I can't find is anywhere to specify anything like a DNS server that would solve this problem. I've already gone through and assigned gateways and hostname and domain and IP address, but I can't find where to specify the address of a DNS server. Help...please? -Myles

can't make udev rule work

Hello all: I am trying to set up jetico's bestcrypt on my SUSE 10.0 x86_64. Bestcrypt startup script (/etc/init.d/bcrypt start) creates the bcrypt[0-16] devices in /dev/. The permissions of those files should be 0666 but they are: brw-r----- 1 root disk 188, 0 2005-11-29 22:07 /dev/bcrypt0 I created an udev rule file: /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules that contains: KERNEL=="bcrypt[0-9]*", NAME="%k", MODE="0666" I restarted udev with udevstart but the permissions have not changed, the udev rule did not work. Please reply to the list only unless specifically asked to go private email. You lose a lot of exposure to experienced helpers. Check your email program for "Reply To List" capabilities. Thanks and now on to the issue at hand: I really, really, very strongly, recommend trying the FailSafe option. It just might get you past all these lockups and CD/DVD drive/media reading issues. If it installs then we can go back and enable the options one at a time to see which breaks/fixes whatever. Another thought is to check www.CDFreaks.com for CD/DVD drive firmware updates. That may cure some CD/DVD drive issues. Stan
