Unreal Tournament 2003 simply doesn't work...

Hi, After my several unsuccessful tries, now based on info from the web I managed to install UT2003 on SUSE Linux 10.0. (Yes, original German box, containing 3CDs, reg. code, etc.) I was extremely happy to see it on the harddisk, but running it as user (or even root) resulted the same error message: agika:~ # ut2003 C++/ Script class size mismatch History: Exiting due to error agika:~ # When running it not from console, but e.g. from K-menu resulted the splash of the game came up for few seconds, then disappeared... I'm very disappointed now, but didn't find any corresponding info on Google how to get the game up and running. Please, did anyone overcome this kind of annoying error?! Thanks, Pelibali

floppy drive problems with SuSE 9.3

Hi, everyone. Something has happened to my floppy drive. I had removed it from the box and then put it back in after doing some upgrades. Perhaps I have reinstalled it wrong, but I can't figure out why things have gotten messed up. Nor can I figure how to fix. When I insert a floppy disk now and click on <my computer/floppy drive> I get two boxes on the screen. One says "Error - Konqueror The process for the medial protocol died unexpectedly." The other says "Mounting /dev/fd0." Then the progress bar shows 0% progress and goes no farther. No files are displayed. If I then right click on the floppy drive icon I see the following: Under the general tab I have: Type: Unmounted Floppy Location: / (media) And under the permissions tab I have: Ownership: User: (there is nothing here -- it is blank) Group: (there is nothing here -- it is blank) I cannot make any changes to the permissions. If I try I get the same two error boxes mentioned above. The only way I can hope to see the files on the floppy is to go to </media/floppy> I can then try to access the files. However, when I click on the floppy drive folder the floppy drive starts searching, and the green drive light goes on. But it never stops searching. The drive will turn for awhile, the green light will go out momentarily, and then it will start up again. This repeats forever. So something is totally screwed up with the floppy drive. I don't seem to have "ownership" of the drive as user. And even as root I can't change anything (or at least I can't figure out how to change anything). What can I do to regain proper operational control over this silly floppy drive? Can I delete the damned thing and get SuSE 9.3 to re-recognize it? Help!! :o) Thanks. Gil If

I have a dual boot machine. When I checks the stats on the seti page I noticed that they were different when running XP, or SuSE. The machine is mostly idle. Is anyone else running setiathome? This happens a lot lately, yesterday with gcompris (there were two packman versions installed). Running gcompris is also giving me problems with X, the resolution is changed to a lower one and I can't change it back. This happens with a lot of games that my kids play. This didn't happen with SUSE 9.3 (The only thing that was better in 9.3 compared to 10.0). My videocard is a: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. G400/G450 (rev 04) Anybody seen the same behaviour? apache2-2.0.54-10 looks broken,

Greetings, I have configured apache since Suse 7 and redhat 6, never ever had too many issues. This version in Suse 10, refuses outright to start. When I get it started, and try access the site - it says access denied, otherwise it picks on the syntax in my html files which works perfectly fine on the my redhat box running an older apache, not in 5 years have I ever seen this behaviour. It won't even run the site as the defualt site, Has any one here had troubles with Suse 10 and Apache? #rpm -qa | grep apache apache2-prefork-2.0.54-10 apache2-2.0.54-10 TIA Chadley

10.0 and NTP

I've been trying to set up my 10.0 machine as an ntp client. The software is installed but when it tries to validate a server (I've tried several in the Canada and the U.S) it tells me it cannot reach the server. Addresses are provided by YaST's NTP Client module. Has anyone success in setting up 10.0 with a N.A. time server?

USB Serial port problem

Hi All, I have a Dell 5100 and I'm trying to use a USB/serial convertor. fonts issue with KDE 3.5 upgrade

I have just upgraded KDE 3.5-0 to 3.5-2 and after rebooting the fonts are all to pot. All the fonts on KDM are squares KDM also takes longer to start. I can login but KDE takes ages to start and all the fonts are squares same as on KDM I used smart to upgrade and everything seemed to go OK till I rebooted. I did run SuSEconfig and ldconfig manualy after the upgrade. This is all on a SUSE 10GM box. Any help please I would like to sort this but I will be reinstalling soon as I am swopping out a raid card and changing the graphics card soon.

Install from SuSE 10 DVD hangs

Hello, Installing from DVD and the installer is hanging at, 'Searching for info file', and doesn't go beyond that point. How do I get around this? Also, as an aside, are there more apps on the DVD or do the CDs and DVD contain the same number of applications? Many thanks, ~James

apt question

Hello SuSE people, Should know the answer to this myself as I have been using apt for many years keeping all my SuSE distros right up to date. But I saw something tonight which made me suspicious and worries me. Did my update and then did the -s for upgrade. Apt offered to upgrade KDE to 3.5 and listed the packages to be upgraded. But then it said it would hold back kde base, multimedia, and a few others. They are presently 3.4.3 How can it upgrade KDE without those vital packages? And why is it holding those packages ? Am afraid if I had continued with the proposed upgrade I would have a terrible mess. Any ideas, explanations, etc. Bob S.

Suse 10.0 hates Asus A8VE-Deluxe

Well, one of them is a lemon. The Asus motherboard was a struggle even with Suse 9.3 It sounds promising, AMD_64, integrated wireless, SATA, gigabit ethernet, sound. nVidia card to round it out. For Suse 9.3, upgrading the bios to 1008 really helped. (1009 breaks it again). Quite stable. Suse 10 is difficult to install. Can't read the DVD consistently. Even installing from the network is problematic. Critical packages won't install. Graphics detection segfaults. Yast segfaults. Online upgrade crashes. Basically unusable. I'd blame the hardware, if 9.3 weren't working so well. What's up with 10? Paul Alfille

OOo 2_0 enters dates as MM/DD/YY violating global KDE and YaST settings

Maybe this is slightly OT but it's related to an app I run on SUSE Linux and so I post it here. I am using OOo 2_001 on SUSE 10.0 KDE 3.5RC1. I entered a date as 2005-11-26. It displayed it in the cell as 11/26/05. I got irritated. My settings are: KDE Control Center > Regional & Accessibility > Country/Region & Language Short date format: DD-MM-YYYY and YaST > System > Date and Time has Region = Asia and Time Zone = Calcutta with Time and Date showing as 26-11-2005. This being so, how come the program is showing me the American date format? Even if it did not display in the ISO format I entered the date in, it has no business using a regional setting other than what I have specified system-wide. I dug into the OOo Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages menu and found that User Interface, Locale Setting are both at Default with only the Default Languages for Documents > Western being English (USA). Changing this to English (UK) does not help, even after restarting OOo. Any thoughts/help? Thanks.

LVM mounting order - complete disaster

Hi, I have created the following setup: sda: sda1: /boot sda2: /swap sda3: LVM i.e. all of the rest space is put in one volume group. Now, I created volumes inside, for all my needs (i.e. /tmp, /var, /usr, etc...). and left some free space for latter assignment. After the system was installed and up and running, I decided to assign the rest free space to be used by mysql. So, I created (using yast/lvm) a new volume from the free space, set mount point to /var/lib/mysql, set the filesystem options, everything. Nothing special, looks exactly like all other volumes. Yast created everything, added an entry in fstab and mounted the volume. Perfect. ...Until reboot. This volume is not mounted on reboot. If after the system is started I go to yast/lvm - it shows it as mounted, but it is not. It is not displayed neither by mount, nor by df. So, using yast/lvm, I unmount the volume, save the changes, mount it again on the same place, save changes - and the volume is there, mounted, with all the files. I can reproduce this behaviour on 2 SuSE 10.0 machines. Looks like the problem may be in that this volume is mounted at a third level, and maybe it tries to mount it before the parent volume is mounted at all. I have this: vol1 -> / vol2 -> /var volx -> /var/lib/mysql In fstab these mounts are listed in the right order. So I'm wondering if there is some different mechanism for ordering which volume is activated after which? Thanks -- -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)

Package refresh with "yast2 lan"

I'm curious: Is it necessary to do a package refresh when configuring a network device? This creates a bit of a catch-22 when one is not on the network and needs to configure a new wireless card. A lot of time-outs and "Skip refresh" button selections are necessitated (depending on the number of sources configured to refresh of course). Perhaps a bug? - Bruce

Mates, I manage my own server with 10 clients. The 'not so intelligent' folks I work with have saved file names that cannot be backed up with growisofs, etc.., because the file names are too long and violate the Joliet and Rock-Ridge conventions. This usually happens when they save web pages and the html title gets used as the filename. I need a way to search the sever and identify the files that are too long so I can change them without having to search manually. Does anybody know of a tool that will do this? I don't remember the exact filename limits for Joliet/Rock Ridge, but something like this: `find /base/path/ -name "??????????..????????????*" -print` Should find them all. The catch is, you have to replace the ?????? part with the same number of question marks as the longest allowed filename in Joliet or RR. ("?" matches on exactly one character -- no more, no less -- including spaces/digits/symbols/etc. "*" matches on any number of any character, including a null character. So in English this command line reads like "find every file under the path /base/path/ that has at least [number of ?'s] characters in it, and either ends there or has anything else after it.") There might be a shortcut syntax for find, I'm just not sure...something like `find /base/path/ -name "?{0,255}*" -print`, maybe...you'll have to play around to find something that works, but I'll be curious to know what you find if you do find a shortcut... - Ian

Change the time that cron.daily is run

Hey, all -- I'm trying to figure out how to change the time that the scripts in cron.daily are run. Currently they're processed right around 2 AM, 2:05 I think. This seems to be the default for 9.3. For various reasons, I need some of them to run between 12:30 and 1 AM. It used to be possible to change the single line that controlled cron.daily (for example) in /etc/crontab. However, it seems that all of the scheduled scripts are now controlled by calling /usr/lib/cron/run-crons each hour. It's not clear to me where the config info comes from that tells run-crons on which hour to run the cron.daily scripts. Anyone have any pointers?

sharing /home between different linuxes

Hello, I am in the process of setting up a multi-boot system, where I may have Suse, Ubuntu and possibly another variant of linux. (I am in learning mode) Will there be any problems if I mount /home on one partition (say on /dev/hda5), and use that partition as /home for all of the flavours of linux? Would there be conflicts when installing one system if another already has its /home on /dev/hda5 or when upgrading? i.e. will the upgrade or install wipe the existing /home? Would there be any problems with using Gnome on one linux and kde on another? Would it be OK to share say Thunderbird email between the different flavours even if the versions of Thurderbird differed slightly? Is it a good idea? John

Converting from raw photos to JPG and keeping EXIF headers?

Hello all! I have a Pentax *istDS digital SLR camera that records in .pef format (Pentax raw). It has what corresponds to EXIF fileheaders included, but i cant seem to get them transfered when i convert to JPEG. I use dcraw to convert from .pef to .jpg and that works perfectly. The only caveat is the EXIF headers that is lost. Has anyone a solution for this? Or a pointer on how they did it on another camera or even a URL describing things? Large HD problems?

Hey all, There have been multiple posts I've read on this list saying that for some reason HDs over 250 GBs and drives that are 250, have problems with Linux. So is this true at all? I've been thinking that with my Birthday and Christmas coming soon (Birthday is in 5 days, Christmas is 25 days after that) I may get money or some gift cards for a store and may buy some extra HDs as even though I've had a computer for 5 years now I've never actually had a computer with more than one HD in it and I'm thinking of what size to get. -Allen.

Subversion, svnserve and Windows

Hi All, I'm currently having considerable pain with a subversion setup, the actual repository has been setup without a problem, the issue I think is with svnserve. I've configured svnserve to run through xinetd as so: service svn { disable = no socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = mbsub group = svn server = /usr/bin/svnserve server_args = svnserve -i -d -r /home/mbsub/mb flags = REUSE port = 3690 } Groups and users exist, the port mapping is correct in /etc/services, xinetd starts without error and shows svn to be running and I can connect to port 3690 via telnet all without a problem. The issue is however when any of our windows developers try to connect via tortoise svn, the repo-browser always says theres no repository found using svn://IPADDR/PATH/TO/REPO. Nothing I do, nor setting I change makes any difference to the error. Can anyone shed any light on whats happening. I'm using Suse 9.3 with Subversion 1.1.3 Many Thanks, Ben

Permission problem with LDAP and SuSE 9.3

Hi all, I made tests with LDAP in SuSE 9.3 and find a problem: "chgrp" and "chown" fails when changing ownerships from a group with more than 50 users, Yast Online Update don't report any correction or comments to this problem ! A friend made a nss_ldap compilation from source and the problem was solved, but I did a stop in NSCD daemon and the problem returns !!! Anyone had this problem ??? FireFox and Java

My FireFox -- ver 1.0.7 and my java -- ver 1.5.0_03 are not working together. I run AMD64 SuSE 10.0 As far as I can tell they are both there, what do I need to do to Firefox to point it to the java. I'm not even sure where java is... my Limewire is woring with this java version so I know it is there. Should I just reinstall Firefox, will it then pick it up? Thanks in advance. Source RPMs not in 10.0 Retail DVD?

Hi, I'm looking for the source RPMs on my retail 10.0 DVD, and didn't find them. I also checked CD1 and CD5, no sources either. The COPYRIGHT file tells that ``source code is available for download on ftp://ftp.suse.com. For others, it is shipped directly on the CDs or DVDs.'' This doesn't seem to be true. Is it really true that sources are only available from the Internet servers and are not on the product media that I bought? (I'm on a metered Internet connection, downloading the 4.4 GB SRC DVD that I have seen costs me *more* money than the box costed.) Btw, no need to point out the mirrors of ftp.opensuse.org/distribution/... to me. I know that I can get the package sources as single src.rpms from there. But I would have expected them to be part of the sold package, as it was in all previous SUSE versions. (Another CD or DVD shouldn't be the issue, should it?) So I'm wondering if I have overseen something in my boxed SUSE version. lan down, int access ok

Hi all- Here is a cable modem, 80211b linksys router, 3 hubs and several 9.1 pc's. Before adding the cable modem, the lan was set up manually and worked ok for me using ssh & dialup etc. Since adding the cable modem, all pc's have slowly seemed to lose thier 172.16.x.x ident- ities and pinging stopped working. The router has assigned 192.168.x.x which dont ping locally either except for 192.168.1.1. I guess my question is: Is the lan set up seperately, i.e. with yast, ignoring the dynamic assignments? I am still unfamiliar with IP masquerading if thats what is called for on this home setup. Below is the "ifstatus eth0" from a toshiba laptop.
