wine and X.org

Hello, all I'm running the standard wine installation from a fresh 9.2 setup... Any games I try to run on wine will destroy my X session. It won't return to KDM, the screen will just go black, as if I had selected a bad screen resolution; the only way to get out of it is to CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE (jumping to a ctrl+alt+F1 terminal and killing the wine process won't work). Apps that don't require full screen work just fine. I'm running a ATI 3D Rage II, 1280x1024, 24bit color. I know, it's old, but it worked just fine on suse 9.1. I'm guessing it's something to do with the adoption of X.org instead of XFree86, the major graphical change between 9.1 and 9.2. Has anybody else experienced such issues? I've been using linux since mandrake 8.1, but I haven't started messing with wine until recently. Thanks, Marcio Silveira

Linux diskless boot kernel

Hi, I'm building a diskless boot kernel, with kernel version 2.6.9 and 2.6.10-RC3. The client is able to connect to the server, and load the boot image. However, whenever it reached encryption tests, the client machine hangs at there. For different kernel version, it hangs at different encryption tests. Does anyone know what's causing this problem? For version 2.6.10-RC3, it hangs at the first test of sha384 cross page: Testing sha384 cross page test1: (hangs at this point) Thanks in advance. Allen

OT - AVR/GCC microcontroller programming

Some time ago I inquired on this list about what it would take to get a PIC or AVR microcontroller programming/development environment going on linux (specifically my then-Suse 8.0 setup). A few people expressed interest. Well, I eventually decided on going with Atmel's AVR chips, and I've found an excellent page that brings all the tools together for would-be AVR developers using linux: http://users.rcn.com/rneswold/avr/index.html For more info on the AVR chips themselves try, http://www.atmel.com/products/AVR/ I hope those of you who previously expressed an interest find this post useful! OB Suse, it would be very nice to have this stuff already integrated on the Suse disc(s). :) (Apologies in advance if some or all of this is already included in suse's more recent distributions. I've just recently purchased suse 9.2 but with the holidays I haven't yet had a chance to crack it open.)

kernel compile errors

Suse 9.2 & Nvidia Geforce MX4000 video card

I just purchased a Geforce MX 4000 and tried installing SuSE 9.2, only to find that the video adapter is not recognized by SuSE. Has anyone here had any luck installing the nVidia Geforce MX 4000 video adapter? It's defaulting to the Vesa adapter. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Mike

converting realaudio into mp3

Hi all, I know it is possible to convert a "realaudio" stream into mp3. Exactly one year ago i did it on 144 streams, but i forgot (yes, stupid) to jot it down. I've been playing today with sox, rawrec and lame, without the wanted result. I remember i use to grab the output of the dsp-device, used by realplayer, and "the other program" ran as long (one hour) as there was output from the dsp, and ended automagically. No silence in beginning or end. Anybody to refresh my memory? (wget and streamripper don't work on the site) Hans

antivir update

YOU and unlisted updates

Hi Folks, I did a YOU on my 8.2 system and saw nothing there for 8.2, but when I hit finish it d/l'd a new 2.4 kernel 2.4.20-127. It went OK, now running, but it got me thinking that I have seen several instances where an update gets on YOU but is never listed, nor explained. Usually I like to stay up-to-date, but it would be nice to know something about why an update is avail. Have any of you experianced this? Who should run sa-learn?

I've been reading over a lot of old posts from the list on this, but I can't find a definitive answer. I see that a lot of people call `sa-learn' on a nightly basis to train spamassassin based on a common couple of missed-spam and not-spam mbox's. However, I can't tell who should run this. In my setup, I bypass spam checking in amavis, and let procmail feed spamd directly. In SuSE's default config, spamd runs as root, so my first guess is that root should run sa-learn. Would this be different if amavis were doing the spam checking? In that case, would it be appropriate to call sa-learn from the vscan account? I guess as I write this, the answers seem clear, but I want to make sure about this. I'm still having trouble grasping how mail flows through postfix, amavis, spamassassin, and wu-imap. (I've read through some things that tie several other things into this list. It boggles my mind to think about stacking, say, razor on top of it, switching to cyrus imap, and running with maildir's. One step at a time, I suppose.) Any other suggestions on how to get the most out of SuSE's default configs with the least about of frobbage would be greatly appreciated. TIA, dk
