AU8830 problem

Hi, I've got some problems with my MX300 sound card (au8830). After I installed SuSE 9.2 Pro, I tried to configure it in Yast, but it failed. Then I loaded au8830 module manually, but it failed again. Yast error message was "Module couldn't load due to wrong IRQ settings". Alsaconf couldn't find any pci device. I set in BIOS PnP OS enabled, but it didn't help me. Maybe a new kernel from kernel.org could help me? :) (MB: Asus A7K133 with damn VIA chipset, Athlon 1.1Gz) Thanks, Maxim -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. K3b on remote X server?

I am in a situation where I run SuSE 9.1 pro on a different floor then I work on. I have had good results using ssh X -l theuser themachine and then just running the app, such as kmail from the command line. This does not work with Kb3. I can not get a project window up! Anyone have any clue to why this is going on??? All comments welcome. john

Unsuccessfull installation of SuSE 9.2 Pro

Hi, I have SuSE 9.2 Pro, but I can't install it. I have notebook Umax 575T - Celeron 2.4GHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD, DVD/CDRW. This computer successfully run SuSE 9.1 downloaded from FTP and SuSE 9.0 installed from CDs. I made no changes in BIOS settings between installations. I use no external device during installation (nothing is connected expect power supply). In 'Rescue mode' I called 'badblocks -w /dev/hda' but no errors have been found. I tried unsuccessfully many variants of installation, I allways choosed 'New installation'. I will describe some of them: 1st type of attemps: In bootloader I choosed 'Installation', accroding to the manual I tried the kernel param 'hdc=cdrom' too. I used the default settings expect the language (I changed it from english to czech) and disk partitioning (hda1: 500MB for swap, hda2 is the rest used for /). Formatting finished ok (reiser) and the packages started to be installed. During this process my computer freezes, during many attemps it freezes on different packages (the last attemp was freezed on 'coreutils-5.2.1'). I'm not sure but I thing the freezing is after reaching 100% on progress bar. By the freezing I mean that I can't move mouse cursor, the hours on mouse cursor stops and no commands from keyboard are catched. 2nd: The type of installation is 'Installation - Safe Settings'. I tryed the kernel parametr 'hdc=cdrom' again. The disk partitioning I used is the same as previous. The installation process stoped during formating of hda2. The LED of HDD was lighting (always) and cursor COULD BE moved. But after half an hour no progress - the LED didn't stoped to light and no package started to be installed. In log at tty4 were messages that the frequency of CPU has been changed (I don't understand it). A couple of this messages were printed during filling of swap and many of them (more than 120) were printed during formatiing (I mean a while after using swap). The messages are in relation with kernel's accessing the HDD. 3rd: 'Installation - ACPI Disabled'. I tried the default kernel parameters only. The progress is for me from the user's point of view very similar to the first type of attemps. During the last attemp of this type the computer frezed on 'db-4.2.52' package, again on 100% progress bar. Please, how do I install my new SuSE? Thank you very much.

Where are Openssl Header Files?

I cannot find the openssl header files and there doesn't seem to be an openssl-dev rpm on any of the SLES 9 CD's. Anyone have any ideas? Thx, CC

1280x854 lcd resolution

Hello everyone I am having a rough time getting my laptop to work in 1280x854 resolution (the native resolution of the beast) - I have tried in Sax2 to set up the right resolution (it warned that it could not detect screen size, so I had to put it in in mm) - it seems no matter what I do, I do not get the good resolution, it just jumps back to 1024x768 all the time. This is not good because it makes edges look "fuzzy" i suppose scaling everything. When I tell it that the screen is LCD>1280x800 (close?) it accepts, but when I test the picture is garbled. Has anyone got a decent widescreen resolution working? Any help or comments much appreciated. My laptop: Notino W6700 (http://www.higrade.com/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=1930) Nvidia GeForce 440 Go 64Mb 15.2in lcd with a native resolution of 1,280 x 854 (apparently the same as a Ti Powerbook) Thanks, H

Well, it was easy to find on suse.com but now after tredging thru a cludge of a website and a seemingly useless search engine, I cannot find the oracle installation guides. Also, the option to link your support login to the freebie login is not working either.

capital letters for directories on a external hard-drive

shell script question (not basic)

All, I've written a shell script and it basically works, but not quite. I have a bug, a scripting question, and a 'parted' desire. First the bug: The wait command below is not working. If I inline the function 'clean_a_drive', the wait command works as expected. How can I make wait actually pause until all the background functions are complete. If inlining the code is the only way, that will obviously be acceptable, it just seems like there ought to be a way to do this. Now the concern: In the function, what is the scope of the variables. I want them to be local to the function and I think they are, but I'm concerned they may be global, I may end up having the wrong size partitions created if I have drives of different sizes that I'm wiping. And the desire: I wish there were a simple way to create the partition as large as possible and not have to pass in the size in MEGS to parted. By using megs, I loosing a little bit of useable space at the end of the drive. Kfloppy formatting

Hello everyone: I'm experiencing some problems trying to get Kfloppy to format a floppy disk. I'm running SuSE 9.1 (32-bit) on an older machine and SuSE 9.1 (64-bit) on the new machine. In either case, the floppies won't format. I've even tried the command line approach fdformat /dev/fd0 (u or h) 1440 and while the terminal seems to be working, the floppies are not formatted. When I try Kfloppy, the menu 'greys out' (after the 'destroy data' warning). Seems to me that when Kfloppy is working properly, there's a horizontal bar indicator showing the work being done (as a percentage). This 'bar' does not appear now. On the older machine, I've adjusted the fstab so that the floppy drive must be 'mounted' and 'unmounted' and not 'automatically mounted' as on the new machine. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
