( 6G drive, 258M-500M swap partition(s) ) "There is not enough memory to load all data; To continue, activate some swap space." ( It appears to recognize the 258M swap space, because then it has me choose hda1 ) And then: "Error activating swap space." I get the message above when trying to install SuSE 9.1 on a hard drive with a single partition (Linux Swap) on it, or with 2 swap partitions on the drive, with one of them formatted and the other not formatted -- I was trying to figure out how to get the install program to sucessfully . Partitions and formatting done by System Commander. (Because I can boot into it, partition, and format without installing an OS.) I've got 128M of RAM and 256K of cache. Can't seem to get far enough in the install to be able to access fdisk / cfdisk, and wouldn't really be sure how to do it, anyway... Hopefully, that's clearer than it sounds... ntp time server

Living in a country where time is not (always) important I still sometimes want to know the exact time I live in. I have worked on the ntp.conf and have put three timeserver in the config file. After using ntptimeset I now know that my time is off by 1807.1719510 seconds. Nice to know but now what? I have read through the ntp document until I did not understood anything more and still do not know how to adjust my time automagically. Could somebody assist me?

If I type "1" into "top", it says "Sorry, only one cpu detected". Is there some way for me to confirm that all the necessary pieces are in place and all the necessary configuration options properly chosen so I actually get the benefit of HyperThreading. Likewise, is there an empirical test I can perform that will show me the performance advantage of HTT? I should also point out that the rest of my system, including all PCI boards, hard drives and CD/DVD ROM and recorders as well as the cabinet and power supply are the same ones that were in the old, now-defunct system. The initial setup of SuSE Professional 9.1 did not install the SMP kernel, of course. After I got the new CPU and motherboard installed and running, I used YaST to install the kernel-smp package from the original distribution media and then used YOU to upgrade it via the Internet to 2.6.5-7.95-smp. One thing that confuses me is the repeated use of the phrase "Supporting Hyper-Threading Technology" or some such. That phrase, for example, is printed on the box of the CPU I'm using (right under the text "Pentium (r) 4 Processor"). Similarly, on the box in which the motherboard was shipped, the following statement appears (in 12 languages, no less): "HYPER-THREADING TECHNOLOGY: Using HT Technology with this desktop board requires an HT Technology-enabled processor, chipset, BIOS and operating system. See www.intel.com/info/hyperthreading for information." It seems kind of odd to say you need an HTT-enabled chipset and BIOS when those components are part of the product itself. In reviewing the past few months of the mailing list archives for posts pertaining to Hyper-Threading, I found some refences to enabling HTT support in the BIOS. I went through every BIOS configuration and information page (including the ones that are only accessible when some other option is suitable chosen) and could find no overt reference to Hyper-Threading. Can anybody help me understand this business better and find out unequivocally and unambiguously whether I am currently using HTT on my new system and if not, how to enable it? Thanks! HD problem...

Hi all... I was given a used HD. The guy who gave it to me used a Norton program to write 0 and 1 all over the disk. He did this about 20 times (overkill I know, but it was his disk). Now the disk will not work. When I put it in my system the Bios can read the name and how large it is. But when I try to load Linux on it I get all kinds of errors. One error that jumped out at me was something about not being able to read the partition table. Is there anything I can do to restore this disk? BTW its a Fujitsu MPF3204AH, 20.4GB. 9.1 Yast Online Kernel Update HANGS on ASUS A7N8X-E

The 9.1 Yast Online Update intoduces a kernel boot HANG inside /etc/init.d/boot.localfs at about line 114 with sync. The man pages say sync flushes the disk buffers. The lines nearby are... 113: fi 114: sync 115: test $FSCK_RETURN -gt 0 && touch... 116: fi I tried loading all the updates except the kernel update and everything worked. When I did the final SUSE Yast Online kernel update, the boot stopped at sync. After this point in boot.localfs the filesystems are to be mounted for use. Of course it never gets there. Could this be a kernel problem or a kernel update setup problem or both? SUSE are you listening? The SUSE 9.1 install required I use the "Installation - Safe Settings" to avoid Kernel Panics. That means amoung others acpi=off, apm=off, and ide=nodma. I added per the admin manual page 21, hdc=cdrom. The ASUS A7N8X-E is configured per the ASUS defaults with the SATA disabled by jumper SATA_EN1 2-3. The BIOS setup uses the defaults with CPU External frequency shown at 133 Mhz. A 133 Mhz DDR IS in Slot A1 and the CPU is an AMD Athlon XT 1800+. BTW /etc/init.d/README explains the startup process, useful to debug boot HANGs. John Wolter mailto: johnswolter(a)wolterworks.com

9.1 post install Q's

Hi there, Migrated from 9.0 but seem to be having problems configuring the cable network card which is behind a local gateway-router, didn't previously have any problems specifying a static address in 9.0 but now it only seems to work with DCHP? Also, is there a way to include the KDE menu options into the Gnome desktop menu's? Another problem I'm facing at present is the Apache2 server, whether this may be related to the above not sure? Seems like the firewall is refusing to connect, and it won't even recognise the host name, I sorted this out before with 9.0, but for some reason repeating the settings/config isn't working or I've missed something new? Upgraded my bride's dual boot box today from SuSE 8.2 to 9.0. For the most part all went well, but I'm experiencing a problem with 9.0 both booting and recognizing the card reader, an Addonics Pocket Digidrive model AEPDMD4. An earlier 8.1 install recognized this device and set it up during install, but no luck on this update. Booting 9.0 with the device plugged in results in random booting with the device neither being recognized nor auto /etc/fstab write, or the boot hanging until the device is removed. On a hang I can <ctrl> <alt> <del> and the hang will stop, running to the log on screen, and then immediately shutting down. Booting with the digidrive plugged in always results in a completed boot. On the hangs, the boot runs till it reads: Starting hardware scan on boot then an approximate 3 second pause followed by Starting mail service (postfix) on the same line as the hardware scan info and then the cursor drops one line and hangs. I'll provide the printout below of fstab (not sure if it contains any clues) and what I think are the pertinent lines from /var/log/boot.msg Looking at Ctrl Ctr | YaST2 Modules | Hardware | Hardware Information shows under USB, Disk, and SCSI all 4 modules of the Digidrive, namely SmartMedia; CompactFlash; MemoryStick; and MMC&SD.
