Sorry if that subject line appears to be mashing things together, they may be related. I've now tried to get a cf card to mount using a usb card reader on two 9.1 machines, fully patched including kernel patches, and upgraded to kde 3.2.2. I've also tried to get both to recognise a camera attached by USB, which works fine under 8.2 and 9.0. Rather like Art Fore's problems with a firewire hd, I get a 'cant enter folder' message, or sometimes no message at all. Though at least ARt seems to be able to get to part of his disk. SuSEplugger can see the cf disk as a disk in at least some cases, and sometimes a Konq window opens. The camera gets assigned a directory like: file:/media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70:0:0:0p1 but you can't change into it or list it. The konqueror window dies after a while and has to be closed down. I've had the same with trying to launch things like the bbc radio listen-on-line service, which again worked fine in 8.2 and 9.0. I'm also reading huge load averages on one of the machines during, though not necessarily due to, this business - loads like 8.5. But top only shows one or two running processes that don't seem to account for that sort of load, and are typically X and top itself. For a lark, I tried booting the machine with the camera plugged in and switched on, but this produced a grub error message and the box wouldn't boot. It also seems to rather defeat the point of USB if one has to reboot - not that things worked then either. I think something is quite odd in the new mounting system, but don't know where to try to fix things. I can't say I think much of the 'My computer' window, much as it may be trying to make windows users feel at home, at my end it just seemed to obscure the device names. Playing DVDs with Kaffeinr/xine

Hello, I would like to play DVDs with kaffeine. I have the following installed, but kaffeine still tells me it can't play DVDs: libdvdnav-0.1.9-63 libdvdread-0.9.4-146 libdvdcss-1.2.8-1 xine-lib-0.99.rc3a-106.8 What am I missing? -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert(a)paulsenonline.net

SuSE Installation runs monitor Out of Range

This is not a new problem for the 9.1 Installation; it has existed since I first tried SuSE 8.1 evalution, and I reported it also for 9.0. Maybe it can be figured to be a X problem, but it is so stupid that Suse seriously should solve it and avoid it! From time to time I see correspondingly problems reported, and new users facing this can leave Suse Linux before they really are able to begin. Currently I have a x86 Athlon PC with a ATI Rage 128 graphic card and a good 19" LCD monitor, Viewsonic VP191b, which manages 1280x1024 at maximum 75Hz and 24 bit color depth. (But I have experienced correspondingly problems with other hardware too). Here is what happends: On the blue bootscreen after starting the SuSE Installation from CD1 or DVD1, I seehave verified that the "F2 menue" is utomatically set to 1280x1024 resolution. From bad experiences, I know that this immediately and temporary has to be manually "stepped down" to 1024x768 using the F2 key. (It looks like 1280x1024 is preset with 85Hz refresh rate/vertical frequence, which my monitor cannot manage). I made a fresh New 9.1 Pro full installation and lowered first the resolution to 1024x768 with F2. But after the software installation, I unhappily didn't discover or test the monitor setting, which during the the system configuration had been recognized as and set to VESA 1280x1024@85. The result: after a full 9.1 installation the system rebooted, but then run my monitor "Out of Range" in message box on a black screen. And I was not able to come out of this problem (tried to "Repair" and "Failsafe" without succeed), and had to do a time consuming quite New installation. But this time, after the software installation, I changed the automatic monitor setting from VESA 1280x1024@85 to LCD 1280x1024@75, which then worked well with my monitor. This problem is too stupid and cumbersome to be true. If one is able to do grahical login, it is possible to change the graphic/monitor configuration with SaX2. But if one forget at the same time to test the configuration, I think the same problem can arise also from here. The question is; if one cannot do a graphical login because of running "Monitor out of Range", what to do then? Is it possible to "rapair" the configuration settings or select a command line login? If so, possibly how and where to change/edit the graphical configuration (resolution, frequence and color depth)? (To compare with CDE/Solaris, it is easy to break the CDE startup, just by entering the return key before CDE login screen starts. Then the command line login is made available). Regards Terje J. Switching from KMail to Thunderbird

Hi, I've been using KMail at home and work as my email client and have been fairly (but not completely) satisfied. Recently, I changed to using Thunderbird at work, very easy since my work email uses an IMAP server. But my personal email accounts all use POP servers. Does anyone have experience moving between the two systems? Do they use the same formats for folders and saving email? And if I end up not liking Thunderbird as much as I currently do, will I be able to change back? Thanks, Steve

getting mail to use the smtp server

I have a question for a mail program wiz. I'm using 'mail' to send out a message from within a program using "/usr/bin/mail -s "subject" < "filename &" How do I make it talk to the network's smtp server? No USBDNET on SuSE 9.1

I am attempting to Install my Sharp Zaurus, but unfortunately when I run my script which started my zaurus perfectly under 8.1, I get errors: insmod: can't read 'usbdnet': No such file or directory same error with usbnet. So how exactly do you get the Zaurus working???? George

Attempting to install package below from SUSE 9 cds, Yast says: ------- kdelibs3-devel-3.1.4-24.i586.rpm failed rpm output: error: unpacking of archive failed on file /etc/opt/kde3/ common_options;40b9edf5: cpio: mkdir failed - Permission denied. ------- In /etc the file kde3rc contains the following: [Directories] prefixes=/etc/opt/kde3/ I also get "/etc/opt/kde3: Permission denied" when doing updatedb. Printing from Mozilla

I have problems with mozilla printing. For some reason when I try to print anything the Serif font is changed to Burnstown Dam. To anyone not familiar with this particular font it is not the easiest one to read - it looks like bits of wood nailed together. The San Serif substitute is readable but I am not sure which one it is. I don't think it has anything to do with kprinter because it occurs if I print to file and also if I bypass it all together and print with the lpr command. I suspect it has something to do with font encoding but I have had problems with mozilla printing before and don't want to start experimenting if this is easy to sort out. Any help appreciated. Nick

Oddities with KDE? (Gnome user)

I've just switched to SUSE 9.1 and am investigating the new KDE. However, there are a few things that seem not to be intuitive and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to do them. 1) If I create a new button on the toolbar for an app from the main menu (e.g. JPilot) then I appear not to be able to change its icon because of insufficient permissions. In Gnome, I can change icons to whatever I want - is this not possible in KDE? 2) It appears not to be possible to create popup menus of arbitrary commands/apps as it is in Gnome (with the drawer button type). The nearest I've managed to come is creating a directory of scripts and placing this on the toolbar as a quickbrowser, but this isn't a very elegant solution. Have I missed something?
