Yast Change Source of Installation

In SuSE 8.1 Pro, I am trying to change the source of installation. When I try to change the Software Source Media, I see one entry which has the following settings: Status: On Name: SuSE-Linux-Professional-INT-i386 Version 8.1 URL: cd:///;devices=/dev/sr0,/dev/sr1 First off, I try to "eject sr1" and nothing happens (whereas "eject sr0" ejects my CD-RW drive). Secondly, when I do "eject hdc" my CD-ROM drive ejects. I can't seem to change the URL to include /dev/hdc I also can't seem to add a new entry. Not sure. So, when I try to install new software, it just keeps asking me to insert the disk. I really want to be able to install off tof the CD-ROM drive, not just the CD-RW drive. (Although, ideally allowing it to install off of both drives would be even better). IIf it isn't clear, I have a CD-ROM and a CD-RW drive. I am using kernel 2.4.21 Cheers, wmeler

k3b almost works (but doesn't).

Okay, after battling k3b for a good while now, it seems like it almost wants to work. (Please help me finish off this beast!) Upon trying to burn a set of mp3's, it tells me to insert a blank CD (which is already present in the CD-RW drive). After saying "Force"...it comes back with the following output in the "Progress" window: ? STart writing at 1x speed... X ERROR: Cannot set write parameters mode page. X ERROR: Writing failed. CUPS EPSON C84

I recently downloaded gimp-print 4.3.25 and installed. Trying to get the new EpsonC84 driver for borderless printing. YAST says that it updates the driver list, but I cannot see any change or locate the C84 driver in the YAST window. Trying to find it manually alllows me to find the right driver under the cups directory but it still will not show in YAST. If I use KDE print configutation as part of control center it easily finds the driver but cannot even print. Any ideas as to what to do ? Printer still works witht the YAST Epson C82 driver but no full bleed option. Thanks. dse

Performance Problems with Suse 8.2 Pro as database server.

dear Friends, earlier Server was P-II 64 MB RAM Suse 7.2 Pro and Firebird 1.03 The Interest calculation Process was running in 5 to 10 Min. We upgraded Server to P-III 128 MB RAM Suse 8.2 Pro and FB 1.03 By changing the Mother Board and Fresh Install of Suse 8.2 Surprisingly same process is taking more than One Hour on New Combination (we reseted the Server Before it Completes) . We could not install latest Releases of Firebird at all as Yast2 hangs while installing these packages. Similarly Database validation and Sweep was taking about 4 to 5 Min now it takes more than 1 hr. (Again we resetted Server) Some times and Some times it finishes in 15 to 20 Min. Please Note That Same .gdb and exe tested on FB 1.5 win 32 on Dell Lattitude 840 P-IV, 256 BM Ram, 30 GB IDE, XP Pro The process finishes with in 1 to 2 Mins. though exe and FB Server is Running on Same M/C. Usually we have found that Linux gives Much Better Performance than NT or XP (about 30% to 40 % Faster than WIN *) Can Somebody help us in this Matter. Shall I drop Suse 8.2 Pro and Shift to Suse 9.0. Has Anybody Detected such Slowing Down of database server. Am I Missing any Settings ? Best Regards R. S. Patil

Hi, I'm using suse 8.2 and I'm trying to install the java develement kit (SDK) . I get to the point of selecting the package from the list, but when I click on the continue button I get the message that I haven't selected any package. The way I get to the package list is by putting my cd for installation in and rebooting my system. I then select udate.Could some kind soul tell me how to install this package. TIA. Wayne

e1000 init_module no such device

Hi there, I had suse 8.2 successfully installed on an abit ic7g max 2 mobo, I managed to get the onboard intel pro1000 lan working by installing the module e1000. Unfortunately after 6 months the nb fan came off and I had to return the mobo. I got a replacement, fitted it and booted up, everything worked ok just as before except I can't get the lan working again. /var/log/warn: insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB/kernal/drivers/net/e1000.o: init_module: No such device ifup eth0: Could not get a valid interface name: -> skipped Yast shows (as it did before, I've tried reconfiguring but no difference): ABIT Ethernet controller Configured as eth0 with DHCP Appreciate any pointers to what I should be looking for or trying? Or does it sound like it's broken? Thanks for your help. OK, I tried what you suggested and the first run of "rpm -qa gpg-pubkey*" returned two keys: gpg-pubkey-3d25d3d9-36e12d04 gpg-pubkey-9c800aca-39eef481 You'll recognize the second key as the one you listed below. Since the key is already there I didn't do the export/import steps. So, it looks like the key is there, but something is certainly wrong. Are there any other burning programs (for audio) out there other than k3b with decent interfaces? I can never get k3b to work (although my burner works in other programs, just with bad interfaces). I've also tried xcdroast, which looks like it could be okay, but I can't figure out how to select the source mp3 files. Cheers, wmeler

hi guys, is there anyone that have notice about a komba for a Suse 9.0 (kde 3.1.4) ? I tryed some suse rpms (till to komba2-0.7.3-2.suse.i386.rpm) but they requires older libraries (as libkdecore.so.3 and I have libkdecore.so.4), and so create many conflicts. I tryed also sources(till komba2-0.7.3), I can ./configure with success, but it makes not: $make cd . && \ --foreign ./Makefile /bin/sh: line 1: --foreign: command not found make: *** [Makefile.in] Error 127 good coding mauro

PCMCIA compact flash reader failure under SUSE 9.0.

I desperately need help to crack this. Whenever I plug my compact flash card reader under SUSE 9.0 it fails to load the correct modules. The modules loaded are the orinoco lan drivers. Cardctl ident confirms that it is a flash card of the correct size and identity inserted. Card manager reports that I have inserted a LA4111 Spectrum 24 Wireless Lan PC card. I have read the howto pcmcia pages without any success. I have changed the pcmcia drivers from kernel to external with no difference in behaviour. I ahve recompiled the external and kernel drivers, again with no difference in behaviour, but then I would have been surprised if there were. I really need to sort this out. Any help and pointers much appreciated. Regards Nick

Lost sound in laptop internal speakers...

Hey all! I run SuSE 9.0 and WindowMaker on a Dell Inspiron 8500 with AC'97 SigmaTel audio chip. I had sound in the laptop speakers until recently when after watching some movies with mplayer and sound going out the headphones jack into my stereo, I seemed to have lost the sound in the internal speakers... I checked with alsamixergui to see if there was any channel muted, but none of them was muted. However, the master volume seems not to work anymore and I can only adjust sound volume from pcm... I rebooted the computer, thinking that those weird settings I could not find would go away... Truth is I didn't try in another window manager other than WindowMaker.... So... currently no sound in the laptop's internal speakers... Any ideas why this could have happened? Thank you. Daniel

Scanner Canon LiDE30 won't work anymore... :-(

Hi all, since yesterday my scanner (Canon LiDE30) refused to work under Linux... but it does under WinXP :-/ My system runs SuSE 9.0 Pro and I use Kooka to control the device. It worked pretty fine and scanned images had a very good (for my taste ;)) quality. Some symptoms: the scanner light blinks very fast (hmmm... could use it as strobe for parties :-)) ) but it doesn't move... well, I hear some noises, as if it were about to move along the plate to scan something. Neither the "Preview scan" nor "Final Scan" work... :-/ Any ideas?? Thanks and regards, Martin

Hello All, I've been absent from the list for a while. I just got a PowerBook (about a month ago) so all of my attention had been on getting acclimated to that machine. Now that I am comfortable with my Mac, I am ready to delete my windows 2000 partition on my desktop and go full blown linux on that machine. I plan to go with the FTP install. How can I make sure I get the latest distro with the latest KDE and Gnome Desktops and all the security patches. I was having a few issues with my Linux Partition before, so I suppose I would like to start over. Thanks, -=Thinker

I asked why SuSE makes compiling simple C-code like xhell.c using Motif so difficult. Grip won't see my cd

Dear All I am trying to rip & encode a cd. Grip will not see either of my drives (DVD or CDRecorder) while KAudioCreator does. I have a fresh install of SuSE 9.0 with all available updates. The only changes made are that i have downlaoded lame from Packman. My media directory contains: cdrecorder cdrom dvd floppy KAudioCreator is set to use /dev/cdrom and this works fine (ie it sees the drive but is really, really slow to rip and encode). Grip will not see anything if the Config -> CDRom device is set to /dev/cdrom. Any pointers gratefully recieved, Tim
