Wlan configuration question -- how to turn encryption key "on"

Folks, When trying to hook up my laptop to a wireless network, what more is needed to activate the security key than entering the 26-character key in the appropriate "box" using YaST? When I do so (and after I've reconfigured my firewall to recognize wlan0 as my doorway to the great beyond) my computer sees the connection. But when I run iwconfig, the encryption setting appears as "off." All the other information iwconfig gives clearly shows that the laptop is seeing the wireless hub. I've got my nvidia 3D set up perfectly... and yet this security fix for xfree86 will break it... I'm sick and tired of the nvidia joke we have to run through in dropping down to init3 and never knowing if things will work at all when running sax2 after having run the nvidia installer...

System crashes

Hello everybody. This is my first time I post in this list. I have been using SuSE since many years. Now I am using v. 8.1. It worked fine until yesterday, when I resized (enlarging it) the reiser partition where SuSE is installed. All seemed OK. But when I start the system here what happens: system boots and the kernel is loaded. Then the services start. But when the process reaches "starting kdm service" the system crashes and reboots. (endless loop). Any hint? Bye emilio

VMware and multihead

I'm just playing with a multihead setup on my SuSE 9.0 system and I have a couple of queries. Firstly if I run VMware in full screen mode on my secondary monitor I can't move my mouse back to the primary display, I have the vmware toolbox running on the VM which is running win 2000 server. Rebooting is for that other OS, not Linux(tm). Do you use YaST2 Control C? I have a 'shortcut" to it on my desktop, or if you are using KDE it's on the kicker menu. Start it, it will ask for the root password, then choose: "Install & Remove Software" then: Change the "filter" from "selections" to "search" -- then in the "Search bar" enter "java" and it will give you a list of packages, select the ones you want: "jave-jre" or what ever. If you are not sure what they are, you can ge a short description. Then at bottom you will see: "check dependencies" Click on it, and follow the prompts. When you are satisfied, select "accept" It will tell you what CD's to put in. Don't put in the CD before it asks. The advantage to use the YaST2 Contol Center is is runs, "SuSEconfig" for you. So you don't have to do it. If you can't find the control center, if you do: in a "shell" or "Konsole": "sux -" (without the quotes) Then enter "root's password" then when you get a root prompt, do: "/sbin/yast2" (without the quotes) It will start up the yast control center. You can also get the rpms off the CD, and install them via "kpackage" or "rpm -ivh *.rpm" but IIWY, I'd go with YaST2. Margin printout

Has anyone encountered the problem of a2ps printing with missing left side, as it gets outside of the actual printer margin. I'm trying to print with two page layout, on one paper ... and the top margin of the paper always disappears, clipping of part of the text. Anybody know of a cure?

Another thought. I think I remember reading somewhere sometime that grub (or lilo) is just confused where your root image is at. I think that (for me, for example) in /boot/grub/menu.lst I have (for my image) root=/dev/hda2 and your root image can be an /dev/hdan where n is some number. Maybe try playing with that number. I'm sure there is a way around this. Some months ago I had to move my HD from an Athlon 2200+ machine with hardware problems to an Athlon 900 box and didn't experience any problems. Try this first. I've had that error before (twice). The first time I ended up reinstalling SuSE. (and the following didn't work). The second time the following did work. Insert the SuSE installation CD and see if it's smart enough to recognize that SuSE is already installed. If so, try booting the Installed system. Like I said, I've had 50% luck on this. (Once into the system, be sure to reubild your kernel, slowly, cleanly. And be sure to make grub or lilo happy). Let us know what happens!!! -----Original Message----- From: "Dr. David M. Dual screen X server

This is my setup, I've got two mice. A logitech mouse and a MouseRemote remote control. A GeForce 4 ti 4200 graphics card, with a digital flat panel connected to the DVI port and a TV connected to the SVIDEO port. The first screen has 1280x1024, but the brooktree processor on the card has max 1024x768 for the TV. I want to be able to show DVD on the TV, while still maintaining my desktop on the first screen. This excludes the possibility of a cloned screen, or twinview, as that would limit my desktop to the same resolution for both devices. So far, I got this working ... I have two X displays, the first display is COMPUTER:0.0 and the second is COMPUTER:0.1, so far so good. This is the server layout: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout[all]" InputDevice "Keyboard[0]" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse[2]" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Mouse[1]" "AlwaysCore" Option "Clone" "off" Option "Xinerama" "off" Screen 0 "Screen[0]" Screen 1 "Screen[1]" EndSection Now, the tricky part ... the mouse pointer always displays on display :0.0 and never on :0.1, which is where I'd like to see it so that I can use the mouseremote mouse functions on it. Anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this, I've googled a lot but without any success.

Help with application/x-java-vm, HOWTO

Some sites I visit result in a popup window saying "This page contains information of a type (application/x-java-vm) that can only be viewed with the appropriate plug-in. Clicking OK sends me to a Sun site where there are various java downloads. Anyone know what download file I should get? I downloaded j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586-rpm.bin and obtained an rpm which does not appear to have any plug-in files. Can anyone help me out. I'm using Netscape 7.1. Messed up my bootloader

I was attempting to get my machine to multiboot with a few Linux OSs and Win2000. I have SUSE 9.0 installed and successfully triple booting Win2000 and Mandrake 10 beta 2 with grub on the MBR. I installed Arch Linux as well, but inadvertantly had lilo installed as well (on the MBR) such that now when I start the machine I only get lilo and the ability to log into arch. So I edited my lilo.conf and added the following entry thinking I would be able to log back into SUSE and add grub back to the MBR with an entry for Arch: # # /etc/lilo.conf # boot=/dev/discs/disc0/disc # This line often fixes L40 errors on bootup # disk=/dev/discs/disc0/disc bios=0x80 default=arch timeout=50 lba32 prompt image=/boot/vmlinuz26 label=arch root=/dev/discs/disc0/part11 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label=suse root=/dev/discs/disc0/part7 read-only #other=/dev/discs/disc0/part1 # label=dos # End of file However, I get a kernel panic when I select the suse option in lilo when it gets to the point of loading the kernel. I have Win2000 on /dev/hda1, a /data1 SUSE partition on hda5, swap on hda6, and my 48Gb root SUSE partition on hda7. Any help getting this back is greatly appreciated

Can anybody help with this message in /var/log/warn? We get it when the machine boots as well. mtrr: type mismatch for fd000000,800000 old: write-back new: write-combining Doing a little googling and of course reading Documentation/mtrr.txt it looks like it is video related, but this is a server, no one was using it at the time of these messages. Yes X is running, I know, I know, but with nothing happening on the console, I wouldn't expect to see video related errors in the logs. The errors occurred twice today, right around the time we were having other network related problems on the machine. This is the same Dell 6650 that I've been having intermittent hangs and other nastiness, wondering if this is related. Your thoughts are appreciated. Andy

USB printer problems since update to k_athlon-2.4.21-192

I have a Canon i950 USB printer on my SLP 9.0 i388 systems that I have been printing with using turboprint for months. Since my update, I have not been able to print. The system doesn't even see /dev/usb/lp0 until I go to YaST->Hardware->Printers and then it finds it in a device probe. A hardware scan via YaST->Hardware->Hardware Information doesn't even see it until I bring up the YaST printer dialog. Once recognized I still cannot print. It looks like it loads the USBLP module and then looks at the parallell port! My system is dual-booted with MaxiTrash 98 and Win98 is able to print to it fine. Anyone have a similar problem or a fix? Nameserver (DNS) failure

I finally found where the www.suse.de was planted and substituted my own ISP. I am still getting a DNS failure when attempting to dial my external modem --whether using kppp, kinternet or wvdial. The result with all is a modem that indicates it is connected while refusing any access to the internet --kmail, firefox, mozilla, netscape, konqueror, realplayer all tell me they cannot find the server. SSL with Apache2

kppp vs kinternet

I am using an internal 56k modem, for now, and it works just fine w/kppp, however it doesn't want to work very well w/kinternet though great pains have been taken to make certain that the settings are consistent. It will dial in and establish a connection (according to the log) but will then just time out & finally hang up. Excerpt from log: Feb 27 09:27:30 linux pppd[3017]: Serial connection established. using GDM with Xvnc instead of KDM after Ximian install?

I recently installed Ximian Desktop 2 (XD2) on my SuSE 9.0 Professional box, which switches me from KDM to GDM as my graphical login. The problem is that this messes up Xvnc, the one that is running through xinitd. What I get now is a grey screen instead of a nice gui login screen. Now I was able to get it going again, but only after I switched back to KDM, which now I can't use XD2. How can I tell Xvnc to use GDM instead of KDM? Oh, and with this setup there is no ~/.vnc dir, I looked and tried, I also tried to find an xstartup file on my box, but there was none. Any ideas? Thanks. Stewart

Kernel security-upgrade question -- which patch to use?

Folks, I'm somewhat new to SuSE's kernel upgrade approach, so when I go the 9.0 patch website and saw several upgrade to the kernel ...2.4.21-192 to be precise ... do I only need to install the kernel source patch (I'm running a Pentium 4)? Or must I install all the patches I see currently listed under security upgrades? All the patches dated Feb 18 2004 seem to deal with the same problems, so that implies the different patches for different processors? Or they all address the same problem from different directions? gDesklets in SLPro 9.0

Right, I have been fighting with gDesklets for a week now, trying to get it working. And I stumbled across the solution today. Get all the pre-reqs together for gDesklets and install them. Grab gDesklets 0.26 from gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org Build and install gDesklets (./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc ) In your .profile / .bashrc / .bash_login add the following line: export PYTHONPATH=/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/gtk-2.0/gnome As root, edit the following file: /usr/share/gdesklets/sensor/Sensor.py and comment out the last line: #gtk.threads_init() You can now start and run gDesklets. Forward in my LDAP odissey :-) So far, I have managed to load base.ldif, passwd.ldif, and groups.ldif in my LDAP server with this schemas: include /etc/openldap/schema/core.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/cosine.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/nis.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/inetorgperson.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/yast2userconfig.schema I can connect with directory_administrator and browse the accounts. Problem is I can't do anything else (I _do_ have the rights to write, I'm using the rootdn to connect).
