I moved a SuSE 9 Pro formatted and loaded HDD to a newly assembled PC. ASUS A7V8X-X Rev 1.xx w/256m RAM, etc. No matter how I try to get at it, Default, Failsafe, and all the other Linux boot menu options under SuSE I get this error: "Kernel Panic VFS Unable to mount root fs on 03:43" I can live without the old contents of the HDD if it is necessary. to format the thing. What's the concensus, please? dmc

Hi, I just added an Adaptec 29160 and a used Benchmark VS80/DLT1 (aka Quantum VS80 & Dell PowerVault 110T) to my SuSE SLES8 machine. On boot I get the message at the bottom (as well as other messages - don't want to clutter this list). Any comments, advice, etc. appreciated. Thanks for the info. I'll check that out, although I am running sendmail on these servers as they are 8.x boxes. I did discover that I've been testing with kmail, and it will not recognize that the server supports any auth unless the auth mechs are in upper case. Yet the /etc/sysconfig/sendmail file lists them in lower case. What do you have in your /etc/sysconfig/saslauthd file and your /usr/lib/sasl2/Sendmail file? Cannot Mount CDROM or CD Recorder

I have Linux 9.0 installed. I cannot access my CDROM drive or the CD Recorder. When I attempt to access either one, i get a message that says "I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified". I have searched the support database and can find nothing applicab;e to version 9.0. SuSE support tried to help but gave up and suggested that I subscribe to this mailing list. Any help would be appreciated. I am trying to switch from Windows to Linux and this is my last outstanding problem.

Howto setup PCI wireless Aironet 350 using Yast

Hi I am trying to setup my Cisco Aironet wireless card, which is a PCI one by using Yast (SuSE 9.0). I have an ethernet card which is running just fine as eth0 but adding and configuring the Aironet Wireless does not work. I am using airo.o module that comes with kernel. Yast SAYS that it was configured but checking the boot messages reveals that it failed to start up the wlan0. Has anyone successfully done this ? Where is vmlinuz.config in 9.0??

It goes on to say that this file can be copied to the Linux source directory for a starting point. The problem is that this file doesn't exist. I've searched the archives back through November for the word config, but I don't see a reference to it. I can use cloneconfig, but there is no guarantee that I'm going to get the config in the kernel; cloneconfig asks questions about the configuration. Unless I know the answers used for the release kernel, there are going to be differences. I'd guess that taking the defaults on all questions *MIGHT* be OK, but I don't know. Tripwire Policy File

The tripwire RPM which I downloaded from the SuSE update ftp site seems not to contain much at all. There is no policy file, no cfg file --nothing. Rip audio from divx/xvid/mpg files?

Hey, Can anyone suggest a program that will rip the audio from a video (divx/xvid/mpg) file? Wanting to get some sound clips off of a video but can't figure out how to get just the audio. Or if mencoder is able to do this, could someone show an example command line for it? I've got it installed, but the documentation/info is incredibly heavy on technical details but severely lacking on practical examples. Thanks, Joe

Tripwire Seg Fault

Swedish keyboard mapping

Has someone tried to use the Swedish keyboard mapping in SuSE Pro 9.0? I get an error at every boot up saying that the keymap file se-latin1 cannot be found. I've tried just about anything from changing keyboard mappings to a complete re-install several times. Same problem. Anders Norrbring

Suse 9.0 on Toshiba Satellite A33

Hi, I am trying to install SuSE 9.0 onto the subject laptop and have been stumped by a installation failure. When trying to install, it gets part way through identifying the hardware, and when it tries to start the GUI installer, I get a "keyboard not present" error, and a couple of messages about try to connect the console to /dev/ttys0. Aside from the fact that the laptop does not have a serial port to do this, I can not see any way to get the installer to get past this point. I have tried to do a text only install, and it still fails at the same spot. I am able to use the keyboard to interact with the program, and I am able to see the characters that I type and such, so think that this is just an "X" issue of some sort. Can anyone help with this problem? How do I get the install to go? configuring apache ssl [somewhat] manually

Hi, all -- I know that this is a bit OT for this forum because I am configuring apache manually, but that's only because yast is a bit stupid about it and so perhaps I can beg some help :-) I have mod_ssl loaded and the libssl.so and related files in place. The SuSE httpd.conf leftovers have a <IfDefine DUMMYSSL> LoadModule ssl_module /usr/lib/apache/libssl.so </IfDefine> block which makes it look as though if I could merely define DUMMYSSL then SSL would happily turn on. So how do I define DUMMSSL? Or, alternatively, how do I turn on (and perhaps configure) SSL? xterm titles and bash

Hi, all -- I'm running KDE 3.2 on my 9.0 laptop and I have bash as my shell. Instead of being polite enough to leave my xterm titles alone, it appears that bash is resetting them based on my prompt-type data. I didn't suffer from this feature under 8.1, and don't know where to look to rid myself of it. I have looked in the KDE control panel, YAST, and every rc and setup file under /etc/ that I can find and don't see anything that looks like it would set this behavior. How can I get back to nice, static titles that are what I set them to be? belkin PCI WNIC in desktop box with 9.0 Pro

Hi, all -- I have a new e-Machines desktop and a Belkin 802.11b wireless NIC that doesn't appear to be recognized. I've just gone through the 9.0 setup and passed the network config on the way to creating users, and my 'wireless settings' button is greyed out. Has anyone any experience with such a beast and could point me to how to light up this card? freetype2 -> rebuild rpm after spec file change?

Hi all. On a new box I decided I want to turn on the bytecode interpreter for FT2 to enable Apple's TrueType hinting.... I see I want it. (Plus I have a Mac now) My question is not about the method of grabbing source from Freetype and make/ make install from scratch, rather rebuilding the existing rpm in Suse 9. It entails editing a spec file, and rebuilding it. Sounds simple enough. I'm doing the following: a) Install source rpm for FreeType2 from the Suse 9 CD. b) Drop to the source rpm's spec file directory c) Edit 1 line in freetype2.spec: "%patch100.." ie: not a remark line ..Now what? The URL below seems Suse 7 specific and process ie using -ba params for the rpm won't work * How do I rebuild the rpm...? .....I see the benefit of having this rpm fixed. Can XP ICS support SuSe DHCP?

I am trying to install a SuSe 9.0 machine and access the net thru a WinXP machine using ICS (which supposedly supplies limited DHCP) The SuSe machine is not receiving its IP via DHCP. Can this configuration work or must I supply the SuSe machine with a static IP? I'm sure the hardware works because the SuSe machine dual boots W98SE which connects to the net with no problems.

The servers all report that they support cram-md5 and Digest-md5 but authentication always fails. Has anyone gotten this to work? The Docs leave a great deal unsaid about what the actual values you would enter in something like Kmail or Pegasus. With more road warriers out there this is becomming essential and I wish SuSE would automate the procedure a bit... -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Right ??? Assuming your are, it appears that after the crash, KDE is viewing it as a new install but the "old" stuff is giving problems... Curtis Rey last July wrote up a receipe for how to clean out your temp files and mcop after a new install. It can be found at: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2003-Jul/2981.html I am assuning SuSE starts up for you and you can get into a virtual terminal such as: "ctrl+alt+F1" *** Method for cleaning out /tmp files after KDE upgrade *** If you still have trouble, then hit ctrl+alt+F1 type "root" then enter the psswd, then init 3 (or telinit 3) (you may have to reenter root's password) then rm -rf /tmp/* and then the same with rm -rf /tmp/.* What this does is remove the tmp files and other config files that may have permission sets and pointers to old configs and the cookie for X. Don't worry they will be recreated when you log back in via kdm Then go into the /home/<user name> and type rm -fr .mcop and rm .mcoprc, then go into /home/<user name>/.kde and rm *-<host name> then rm -rf /tmp/* in my case it rm *-Crusher-1 which removes the symlink to /tmp/socket-Crusher-1 and /tmp/tmp-Crusher-1. Now, if you remove/clean out the /tmp (don't rm the /tmp dir itself) and removed the .mcop and mcoprc as well as the .kde/sockets-<host name> and .kde/tmp-<host name> files type from tty1 (crtl+alt+F1) do "init 5 or telinit 5 and you'll see the xserver restart. then ctrl+alt+F1 from the kdm screen and type exit or logout. then crtl+alt+F7 back into kdm login, login to users account. Then do as above in the konsole with "sux -". Forgive me if this is redundant, I don't know you experience level. Like I said, sometimes, after updates, host name changes, etc you have to clean out these files. It used to be a must with kde upgrades, and I still do it from time to time when kde get cranky. My current setup is based on the SUSE 6.4. I have successfully installed the mozilla version 1.3.1. when mozilla 1.4 or later is installed it asks for the libc.so.6 of GLIBC 2.2.4. How to know the GLIBC version of the current setup. If i want to Install RPM of 2.2.4, what are the things needs to be done. Pls help me.

IcqCorp client

Does anyone know of a decent icqCorp client that runs under linux? other than the one on the rusian site. I read somewhere that older LIcq worked, but when trying to install it complains about missing some kdelibs (guess because requires kde <= 2.2) What I want is native tray functionality. I also know about ~/.profile (although I'm really not sure that it's being used. Would someone here be so kind as to list what files are processed at startup where this could be set.
