KDE 3.2 - first impressions

can be deceiving of course, but these were the experiences of the first half hour of using KDE 3.2: - Nice looking! Very snappy to respond, and some very nice eye candy all over. - Kgpg agent seems not to start automatically anymore. - My shortcuts to certain programs like mail don't work. - Someone updated my entire K-Menu. The MenuEditor however works very well, so that was fixed swiftly. - Automatic login (without password), seems to give me an authorisation error. - Kmail complains that my smtp server doesn't allow AUTH. I don't know if Kmail just didn't use it before, or if my smtp server just happened to change when I was updating, because my settings are the same as they were before the upgrade. - Nice eyecandy! :) - The fonts seem to have grown just a tad. Not a bad look though. - Where are my SuSE window decorations? I can understand the settings have been changed, but I can't get the old window decorations back. Too bad, cause though the KDE ones look good, I preferred the SuSE setup. - Why is there a jumping icon next to my mousepointer when the computer is busy? Cute, but still. :) - Managed to make my kicker fully transparent. Very nice touch, though now I dislike the little menu triangle arrows. Wonder if they can be turned off... Overall I'm satisfied with the upgrade. I'll have to see how stable it works in the next few days, and if I can get rid of some of the problems mentioned above, but I think it's a very good new version of KDE. Regards, Pieter Hulshoff

Preparing Patch CD for SuSE 9.0

I am running a SuSE Linux box that is not connected to a network (the internet). Therefore, the YaST Online Updater (YOU) doesn't find the site that provides updates. Looking at Yast, it appears that it's possible to bring the updates to the machine via a CD. I have downloaded the patch rpms (in most case, some are full rpms) and put them on a CD. When I run the Patch CD Update tool in YaST I get an error that it couldn't find "./i386/update/9.0/patches/directory.3". I tried creating this directory and put the patches (rpms) there, but YOU didn't find any patches to install. Is there a document or other source of info that describes what a patch CD needs to look like to work with YOU? I did find a document labeled FTP Patch Update, but it was a bit sketchy and the patch description files it refers to ought to be available somewhere. Is this true? In the absence of this, how do I know the order of installation of the 60 or so rpms that I downloaded? Just so i can brag:) I run an Nforce2 Barton 2600+ with an FX5600 - jesus its great! Now i bought an new machine P4 with ATI Rageon 256Mb card, couldnt get to like it. So im back in Nvidia. So after fumbling for a week to ten days late one night after work I made the switch to an NVidia 4 MX and voila there Sax2 and Yast to play with.Once freed from the command line install of all drivers went smooth but even though I loaded the latest and greatest from NVidia the stubborn FX 5700 still would not work. So I simply switched cards. Suse is now quite comfortable with the Asus TI 4200 and my other NForce AMD combo running XP works fine with the FX5200. That set my dual boot plans back but what the hey. I feel the Suse 9.0 product is overall strong and compares favorabbly with say Red Hat 9.0 I was especially impressed with Samba. I can see every Windows share and drive without any extra work. I suspect the problem is exactly a bleeding edge Vid card and poor support for that particular prouct on any platform other than Windows. It is great for gaming but that makes it somewhat limiting if i wanted to say try to install say Free BSD or some other exotic flavor or distro. In all fairness to Suse Tech support they did try to help with the problem which is more thanI can say for NVidia who never returned my email. Hi, I accidently installed a 8.2 package on my 9.0 system. Now I cannot remove the package anylonger with YaST. How can I delete it manually and clear the correspnding entry in the YaST RPM database as well? I cannot find the entries. Ulrich

installing openssl certificates

We have a signed server certificate from Thawte. Following the instructions in the Apache manual, I have it successfully installed and we don't get complaints from browsers about the self-signed certificate. I want to use that server.crt and server.key duo for all the SSL applications on the server. I believe this is what the "root certificate" is all about. I've found docs for installing self-signed certificates, but I'm having trouble finding where to install the certificates so that something besides apache can use the key/cert combination (like my pop server). I have installed my server's PEM file in /usr/share/ssl/certs as imapd.pem and ipop3d.pem. However, my Mac's mail client still complains that "There is no root certificate for this server." Before it would complain that the server was identified as "localhost.localdomain" so I know that the changes have been recognized by the system. Dear SuSE users: I am trying to compile a program which compiles correctly using gcc 3.3 and SuSE 8.2. However, under 9, i get the following error: /usr/include/wx/repwrt.h:196 error: parse error before '*' token Is this a problem with SuSE 9? I noticed one more thing by the way... when I do "route -n" sometimes the gateway for the 192.168.70.0/255.255.255.0/eth0 entry changes from * to 0.0.0.0, so I wonder if that's the problem or if that's normal behavior. Both are using the same hub they used two days ago when this worked (and same cables). My Windows configuration has not changed one bit, whereas my Linux configuration has changed multiple times (especially since I had to re-install SuSE). It has not worked one bit since I did that. 2. can you ping other machines on the lan or on the Internet? I have no network traffic at all from my Linux box (but I do from my Windows box). I re-installed the e1000 driver that I had on the system before (straight off of a diskette), but have seen no traffic working yet. I thought this would be the easiest way to test it. (Other things to try)? 3. did you disable the firewall on both the windows and linux machine? Windows hasn't changed. Linux--I believe I did. Two things: 1)Not sure why eth0 comes up twice. Once as IPv6, once as IPv4 perhaps? How do I turn off IPv6? 2)The one about NETDEV WATCHDOG is weird. Never saw that when my box was set up right. KDE 3.2 post-install problems

I've managed to install KDE 3.2. It's working, but with a few problems: 1. The panel doesn't show the desktops, as it did in KDE 3.1. I can't find anyplace to configure that. 2. I've lost the icon for Yast2 and can't find it again. 3. The opening banner still indicated KDE 3.1, not KDE 3.2. 4. The fonts are generally harder to read, perhaps because of some antialiasing issue. Can anyone help with any of these? Paul Abrahams

mplayer not playing asf streams

I have installed mplayer and have gotten it to successfully play internet audio streams but it seems not to want to play asf files. The mozilla plugin is installed (from Packman's site) as well as all other listed/unlisted deps but, aside from reporting that it is the mozilla, etc, plugin as well as reporting 'transferring data...' on the status bar, it emits no sound. Any ideas? Thanks... ...CH

I have a Windows machine set for 192.168.70.3/255.255.255.0 and a Linux box set for 192.168.70.6/255.255.255.0 I try to have them ping one another to no avail. Help me out here (and I KNOW the Windows box is configured properly). boot partition no longer bootable

Hi, I was playing with a commercial boot loader (System Commander) on one of my laptops, seeing if it would be useful. I loaded it up with some difficulty and could still boot into linux. I decided that it wasn't what I was interested in and removed it. It said it would restore the original MBR, but it didn't and now my /boot partition is no longer bootable. Is there any way I can use the rescue system to make /boot bootable again? Or do I just have to reinstall linux? Many thanks, Steve

2 Gb file limit and work around?

Hello all! I am trying to back up a 6 gig harddrive with "dd" I want to "save" a complete Windows disk to be able to recreate it later. Kind of a rescue image I have booted from a SuSE 9.0 boot cd and mounted a networkdrive on /mnt i then do "dd if=/dev/hda of=/mnt/image.dd " but i get: dd: writing to '/mnt/image.dd': File to large 4195234+0 records in 4195234+0 records out dd: closing output file '/mnt/image.dd': File to large Is there a easy way to get around the problem? How do i fix the system for larger files? Ok I solved the problem, it was quiet simple actually. I went to yast2, and then to configure DSL connection (the one you should have gone through when you were setting up your system). Then go through the configuration you have there and make sure you have "On Boot" selected and the Idle time set to zero. Save changes, exit KInternet and when it asks you wether you want it to start next time say NO. 2.6 Kernel and LVM

Has anyone successfully upgraded to a 2.6 kernel while using LVM? I upgraded using the 2.6.1 rpm (the kraxel rpm). My mkinitrd was already a higher version, and I installed some LVM2 rpms. When I boot to the 2.6 kernel I am unable to mount any of my LV's. vgscan and lvscan both display everything, but if I try to mount anything I get an error "mount: /dev/Volume00/lvusr is not a valid block device". lsmod shows that dm_mod is running, but I can't seem to locate an lvm module in the /lib/modules/2.6.1-3-default. Can anyone tell me what I am missing and what I need to do in order to correct this? Thanks, Dan Dan

Problems with smbmount command

Hi all. I do have a quite strange and unusual problem. I want to connect to a samba drive within my domain (same network) but when I call the smbmount with the command line: smbmount //myServer.domain.com/drive$ /tmp/test -o username=domain\\user Linux asks me to enter my domain password and the fails with ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (Access denied.) And I know that my password is correct. When I use the smbclient command with: smbclient //myServer.domain.com/drive$ -U domain\\user and then the same password it works. To see whats really the problem I used another client within my network which runs on Redhat Linux and there it works. ! I guessed that the settings for samba client were wrong but I copied the settings from the RedHat PC (smb.conf) to mine and it still didnt work at all. A difference between these two PCs is that Suse9.0 comes with the samba client version 2.2.8-Suse and Redhat runs on 2.2.7. Does anybody have a clue where I can adust something ? thanks, detlef

ICS between two Linux boxes

I am a recent convert from Mandrake to SuSE (I didn't like Mdk9.1, never mind 9.2) and, unlike Mdk, I cannot find any wizard to help one configure ICS. I can ping both ways but cannot get online w/the client box. DHCP leaves me w/no IP address and, though static works for two-way activity, the internet remains out of reach. Can anyone please point me to the proper How-to? I have already consulted the manual and it seems to be silent on this issue. If it is there, I've been unable to find it. Thanks... ...CH

My Friend, you made a simple question that made me thing. I found the solution to my problem. Having FTP working was not my final objective. FTP is still not working for non-anonymous logins, but my Informix server is now listening well to outside requests. Informix was up and running but I have used "localhost" in my sqlhosts file when the right one is "<linuxbox>". Thanks for answering my mail. The problem could very well be a bug in one of the login scripts. It is possible that /etc/profile /etc/profile.local are messed up. ADSL and dial up.

Hi I have ADSL with UKFSN set up with the modem set to be activated on boot. I want to be able to use a dial up connection occasionally from the same box. Using SuSE 9.0 is there a simple command I can use to disconnect from ADSL whilst I use dial up and then bring ADSL back after that dial up session ? The ADSL modem is connected via ethernet using dhcp if that helps. Thanks Mike

Help me recompiling the suse kernel please!

I have try to recompile the suse kernel but i was a pain.. after about an hour of feature remove ( ^_^ ) i am unable to mount root filesistem.. whaaat?? i do the following make cloneconfig make xconfig (and there i remove any thing i'm SURE i don't have!) make dep make clean make bzImage then copy the bzImage in /boot and reconfigure grub make modules make modules_install then reboot ( before rebooting i've try also mk_initrd without any success..) at the boot i see a lot of unresolved symbol and then a reiser_fs unable to mount root filesistem yes i use reiser on my root partition and off course it still in the configuration of the kernel (as module first... then as core..) but ... don't work again... someone can give me a guideline on howto compile this kernel? a kind of make this but DON'T remove this.. etc... if you need special checks on my config i can post it PLEASE HELP ME!! I WANT TO RECOMPILE MY KERNEL ^_^ tnx Andrea

Nvidia Drivers and SuSE 9.0

Also i have problem with "nv" and "nvidia" driver with suse 9.0. Problem with nvidia driver have also when i try in slackware9.1 or if i install kernel-2.4.21 and up... Advice on new H/W to run SuSE 9.0

Due to my old K6/2-500 machine having such problems running recent versions of SUSE (keyboard won't work under X although it is fine in text mode). I have decided it is probably time to upgrade. I already have a spare Athlon XP1800+ lying around so the spec I've given below will use that. Basically I suppose I'm looking for assurance that the thing will work OK. I never used to worry but my recent experiences seem to indicate that SUSE Linux has become rather fussy about the hardware it runs on. I'm going for cheap and cheerful. I'm not too interested in having the highest spec machine. I've been quite happy with the performance of my K6/2 machine. I'm not bothered about 3D graphics either, as long as X works thats OK by me. Seeing that a lot of people are having problems with NVidia cards and that my existing machine also has an NVidia (TNT1) card I thought I'd give a Radeon a try. CPU: Athlon XP1800+ Mobo: Epox 8K9A7I RAM: 512Mb Graphics: Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9200 SE 128Mb (how about a Radeon 7000, even cheaper but will it work ?) I'll be reusing the case, PSU (400W) , drives (6xHD, 1xCd, 1xDVD) and Promise Ultra-100 controller from my old machine. TIA Sean.

KAMix doesn't display volume control

Hi My soudcard is recognised and works but I can't change the volume. I've tried restarting alsasound and KAMix but the volume control slider is greyed out, in fact it doesn't display at all. I can change the volume in Yast however. Card model: Crystal Semiconductor: SuSE-9.0 Any ideas? Thanks, Steve.

KSCD.

I have had problems with my KSCD here in SuSE 8.2 Linux. It was started every time I have booted my computer up, and as such it has searched for a media in the drive making 100's of lines in my messages logfile. If I had no media in the drive, KSCD did claim about the lack of a media, and this also was repeated a huge in the messages logfile. I did a killall kscd, and went out of KDE. Then this kscd behaviour stopped, and the computer speeded up. But now if I have an audio-cd in the drive, I cannot get kscd to come up. How can I tackle this ?. I don't know if Prime95 is available for Linux. I think is free. It has three tests in its "Turture test", the default one is the third one that focuses on memory. Run it. If you get an error, most likelly your memory is bad. I had a problem like that; the store I got the parts from said they run a mem test and that it was OK but it was not. Is there a way to just ERASE the hard drive completely (and allow SuSE to repartition it, etc.) so that when I insert the installation CDs everything will start from scratch? (Right now, when I try to install, things do not go well at all. It complains about some shared objects and gives a "segmentation fault.") Hi, Anyone have tried this kernel (2.6.1.-3 from SuSE people - Kraxel dir) on SuSE 9? Anything else required except upgrade of mkinitrd and refreshing modules.conf? PS. It seems kernel 2.6 requires upgrade of alsa from 0.9 to 1.x. I have installed alsa 1.x from packman dir with current 2.4.21-166 kernel, and got loud endless noise from soundblaster which I have been unable to eliminate. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. "Kernel: allocation failed" error

Dear list, the error, actually, is: kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0xf0/0) I have lots of these errors and eventually my 7.3 system is unable to work. Some things are working but I'm unable to "shutdown -r" the system. The machine "partially" freezes. That is, I'm unable to shut it down with ctrl-alt-delete, too; alternate consoles are not working, but I can login with ssh. Really strange stuff. Eventually I had to press the reset button and, of course, I have to manually fsck all the disks. :-( At first I suspected cron, because the errors came at nigth, around 00:57-00:59, but today they started at 2:07:22 and ended at 2:18:32, with "gfp={0xf0,0x1f0,0x70}/0" randomly alternating. Only a few gfp=0x1d0/0 and gfp=0x20/0 are scattered in between. Lots of "last message repeated x times", too. Hi list, I'll apologise in advance if this has already been answered. I did check the archives first, but it does touch on issues raised recently. I want to install KDE 3.1.5 on my 8.2 pro box. Following lots of discussions from this list, I installed apt last night, ran a few apt-get -s install <package> runs to check the sources.list file and to "get the feel" of apt, then installed synaptic via apt - very cool. Hi all, I have, according to lspci, the following card: 00:0a.0 Serial controller: NetMos Technology 222N-2 I/O Card (2S+1P) (rev 01) (prog-if 02 [16550]) There are some patches agains kernel 2.4.21 mentioned on the kernel mailing list, but I'm not having luck patching these against the SUSE kernel. Apart from running vanilla kernel (which involves some more patching for filesystems and some other things), is there another way to get this going in SUSE? VNC & Suse 8.2 Success with init 5 but Grey window with init 3

Dear Friends, I have very good results when linux box suse 8.2 Pro is running in init 5 mode but i am getting a grey window when its in init 3 mode. The lsof command output shows that vnc server is running but kdm is not listening on port 177. My settings are as listed Below. Can somebody help me in this regard. I would like to access This Linux box irrespective of whether running in mode 5 or 3. Hi Rounded IDE cables are ones where all the 80 wires are arranged in a round bundle rather than flat like a ribbon. The idea being that the surface area of a rounded cable is much less than a flat ribbon cable thus increasing the air flow in your machine. Unfortunately, as I later found out, with all the wires being tightly bundled together there can be cross-talk between the individual wires so you can get signal errors with faster speed drives and ATA-66 or better controllers, thus producing drive access errors. With flat ribbon style IDE cables, each wire is directly next to two others at the most rather than 79 other wires with a rounded arrangement so you don't get the cross-talk between the wires. It is, however, possible to buy shielded rounded cables which don't suffer from this cross-talk. Hope this answers your question. Sean. > Hi, > please excuse my ignorance but what are rounded cables. Wireless setup on SuSE-9.0: terrible

Bascially, the level of ease in setting up wireless-DHCP on SuSE-9.0 is no match to that on Windows-XP. Has anyone succeeded in setting up wireless-DHCP on SuSE-9.0? I succeeded in setting up only once without paying attention to what I was doing. It was onto an WEP-disabled school access point in school in Cambridge, MA. However, after that success, I screwed up the setup while I was doing the same thing to the 128-bit WEP-enabled home wireless router. Since then, no luck even at school over SuSE-9.0 with WEP disabled. There are a bunch of setup files in several places: /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia /etc/pcmcia/config /etc/sysconfig/network/wireless /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-pcmcia /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wvlan-pcmcia /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp /etc/sysconfig/network/config Looking up /var/log/messages revealed that DHCP is not properly working although it works perfectly through wire on SuSE-9.0. In my case of the wireless failure, it really does not matter whether the wireless router is WEP enabled or disabled. My point is that there should be a tool that really imitates the setup tool in Windows XP, which is often called the Wireless Zero Configuration Service. Does anyone have a redhat experience? It drove me nuts and made me think of switching back to RedHat after four years. Thanks. Hugh

After being online for nearly three hours & while I was listening to an audio stream, I brought up kmail to check my e-mail. While it was downloading the process abruptly stopped. The modem was still connected but there was no throughput at all --not to the RealPlayer or the e-mail client. New Linuzx Pre Sale Question

I have a Compaq Presario 1675 with a Lucent soft winmodem. Mandrake and Redhat both have a difficult time recognizing this modem. I have searched and tried linmodems.org etc. but can't seem to find out if Suse Linux will auto recognize the modem and/or if and how much I will need to mess with the install. I'm fairly savvy at Windows but Linux is still new to me. Cheers and Thanks.

Auto Updating the Postfix 'proxy_interface'

This is my first post in the maillist (I hope I did it right - I'm sure someone will let me know if I didn't :) I'm so green to linux that just reading this may give you diarrhea. I just setup SuSE 9, postfix and qpoppoer - I must admit, SuSE did most of the work. If I can do it then there is hope for a free world. My only hiccup is my semi-static IP address to my NAT unit via DSL - it changes every few days. Is there a way for the server to update 'main.cf' file to the correct proxy interface and reload postfix when the WAN IP changes? I'm not even sure how to detect when my ISP expires my address. BTW: it took me quite some time to figure out that the proxy interface needs to be the WAN and not the LAN address. Thank you. Josh Joslyn

Cannot re-install from the CDs

When my installation straight off the SuSE Linux Pro CD 1 gets to the step "integrating the shared objects of the installation system", several errors come up on the screen about problems with various .so (shared object) files. I really want to re-install. Is my only option to wipe the hard drive? If so, how do I do that? Cheers, wmeler

Replacing MS Exchange with a SuSE solution?

My boss wants us to setup an internal email, task, and calendaring solution for our company. We had previously used our ISP for email services. We are very close to going with Microsoft Exchange, but I would like to know what my options are on the Linux (and in particular, SuSE) side? Are there good open-source and/or commercial options that have great security and collaboration features? Someone at our company heard some guy talking about how he has an email, task, and calendaring solution running on Debian, but he didn't get details. I'm also curious .. how do these options compare to MS Exchange in terms of administration? We already paid for a copy of Exchange, but if anoter solution is easier to administer and more secure, we'll go with it. Thanks for the advice!

easy way to upgrade KDE?

Hi! I saw that KDE 3.2 RC1 is out. I also saw that rpm's are available for SuSE 8.2. Now is there a simple way to install this upgrade with some kind of point and click method? In fact when I see the listing of the ftp site, I don't really know what I already have installed on my system. I could go for a 'rpm -qa|grep -i kde' but still it wouldn't help me a lot since the list gets quite long. Should I go for writing a small script or is there a simpler method I am not aware of? GPL Issues

Hello Everyone. I'm going to embark on a project that will require me to butt heads with some high-level kahunas regarding Linux. I work for a very very big company that has enormous clout but is not as risk-taking as I would like them to be. Anyway my question is: If we decide to use a standard distribution of Linux, are we forced to publish our own source code if we statically or dynamically link to GPL libraries, use gcc to compile and use GPL header files? I'm getting different answers from different sources. We are not planning to change the kernel in any way. Maybe create our own drivers for proprietary hardware and install them at runtime. Can anyone shed a bit more light on this? TIA

Hi all, I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but I can't seem to get it right. I have this in my procmailrc :0 * ^Subject:.**SPAM** ! spambox(a)company.co.za Which works fine except that the mail loops once, so I get two of each in the spambox. I would rather like to do :0 * ^Subject:.**SPAM** /home/spambox/Maildir/ The mail gets delivered fine, except that it belongs to root instead of user spambox. How do I specify in procmail that this the ownership shouldn't change? All other users mail is fine, just this one account that gets delivered directly. If you want something commercial you could check out a Lotus Domino/Notes solution. The Domino server will run perfectly on a SuSE system. You can use Outlook clients (yuk !) or just a standard web browser rather than Notes clients if you wish. It is MUCH more secure than Exchange. It is more than just an e-mail solution. It is a complete collaboration/calendaring/web server/you name it solution and is even programmable. Out of the box, Domino/Notes 6.5 is a great improvement over previous versions and well worth a look IMHO. Check out www.notes.net for details. Regarding your critique of SuSE, RH, and other linux distros: It is certainly true that you have to make much more of an effort to make things work. On the other hand you also gain much more freedom to do your own thing, create your own computing environment, setting up your own servers, creating your own software. Linux may not be at the point yet to compete with windows when it comes to the "regular consumer" who only expects to point and click and have everything work. However, having been such a customer at one time I very quickly found myself landlocked by windows. Trying to develop my own applications meant shelling out big bucks for compilers, trying to buy commercial packages for what I wanted to do (scientific data analysis) also meant paying big bucks and in the end having to live with whatever the particular programer thought his clients wanted... In the end for me linux was the right choice because I already knew UNIX, and because I needed the freedom to create my own software and/or to modify existing software. Having said that, I have to admit that I liked previous versions of SuSE better than 9.0. My first impression is that the games section has grown to epic proportions while the number of useful applications has shrunk quite a bit, with some applications like emacs or LaTeX even relegated to the "experienced user" corner and not even included in the default install. My gripe with 9.0 is also that it looks like quite a number of things are broken for no good reason, like k3b, or in this case vmware. However, what makes SuSE worthwhile for me is the ease of administering it with YaST. At this point I am pretty much hooked on it, and hope that it will be extended to include a lot more services. Things I'd like to see in YaST are: tripwire, ntp server, ftp server, apt, and perhaps a couple of more that I can't think of at the moment. Best regards, Alex.

Control Center Weird Behavior

Three things: (1)When attempting to logout of KDE & shutdown the box I am everlastingly sent to the login screen and have to select 'shutdown' AND enter root's password before the box will actually shutdown. This started happening after the online updates were installed w/YOU. (2)When SuSE9 Pro was first installed, pressing the power switch logged me out lf KDE & shutdown the box by default. No longer, and this, too, seems to have changed post-installation of online updates. (3)In the Control Center, under KDE Components, is something else called Session Manager ...and the settings therein will not hold! I select anything other than 'Login as different user' and 'Apply', and the next time I boot the box that change is gone --if it takes that long, which often is does not. As an aside, the AMD-optimized kernel was listed as one of the updates and I reluctantly updated though I have an Intel P4. I wondered why it was auto-checked in the listing, but since I'm new to SuSE... Any help greatly appreciated. Hope I don't have to start from scratch. ...CH

CVS with SSH from a private subnet (savana.gnu.org)

I just discovered that I can access the emacs cvs repository anonymously from my firewall/router, but not from my workstation which is a member of a private subnet setup using IP masquerading. Has anybody encountered this kind of thing? Is there something I can do on my end to make it possible to access the CVS repository from my workstation? STH

2.4.22 kernel

Is there a 2.4.22 kernel for SUSE? I have SUSE 9.0 on an Intel D875PBZ with a mix of PATA and SATA drives and experience intermittent lockups when running in BIOS 'Enhanced' mode (i.e. with the SATA drives appearing in native mode). The D875P uses an ICH5 and BandiPat quoted an article that said the Intel ICH5 needs a 2.4.22 kernel, so I want to give that a try. Thanks, Dave

camstream ftp file permissions

Is there anyway that I can get camstream to upload snapshots with different permissions? I need this so that browsers can access the .jpg's on the 'net. The default is user-rw only. Or is there a way I can strem the output instead of taking snapshots? SuSE-9.0 Thanks, Steve.

Problems with Abit VA-10 v1.1

Hi, I upgrade the motherboard of my computer to a Abit VA-10. The installation of SuSE 9.0 was very difficult because the onboard video card (S3 type), even I using a non-onboard nvidea video card. During setup, when Linux was testing the hardware installed the computer stopped to work, after a reset it works good, but ... I cannot configure my video card via sax2 and a strange thing happens, the keyboard map appears to change in GUI mode and so, I cannot enter my password. After several installations I was used a editor to found what a type and see that one key was changed, in KDE I go to ControlCenter and change the keyboard layout (to the same that I use, sic!) and the keyboard is ok, for me as a user and for root, but still not work in initial login. So I have to ask to do. Firstly, how to configure my video card via text mode? Secondly, how can I configure the keyboard layout used by kdm? Thank you very much Thadeu

KDE login fails with NIS user (Suse 9.0)

Hello I ran into a very strange problem where KDE login crashes with signal 11 butonly when trying to login as a NIS user. It does not matter whether the home folder is on local disk or on a NFS mount point. Local user logins works just fine. How to set a reiserfs partition fsck occasionally?

While the new logging filesystems are a great improvement my experience is that they can't survive forever in the real world without an occasional rebuild or fsck. This list has had warnings by people burnt by reiserfs. I haven't (yet) lost any data but have had some scary times. This hasn't been bugs in reiserfs (3.6) itself as most instability was tracked to (very marginally) flakey RAM. However while the glitches were caused by corrupt RAM they left me with faults in the filesystem, faults that persisted across reboots. These included un-list-able and un-cat-able files. ie: read or ask the size of that file and it's bye-bye to that terminal. It made the whole system unuseable as processes "trod on the cracks" and hung. Backups? Hah, not with that file in the partition. So I think a lot of bad press stems from the misconception that any filesystem can avoid bitrot forever without an fsck. But this is painful to do by hand, I have to boot a rescue system and run reiserfsck by hand, to do the root and system partitions. How can I get back the old behaviour an fsck happening during reboot every x reboots or y days? Or, how can I trigger an "fsck reboot"? TIA, michaelj PS: I've just realized I can do it by adding an fsck into the linuxrc script of a cooked initrd image. That would give me an "fsck boot" option in grub.
