Problems with 8.2

Hey Group: I am have nothing but problems/headaches with 8.2. I use fvwm2 (or command line) because KDE is a massively slow loading memory hog. But I decided to give it a try tonight. Mistake! First time for KDE 3.1. It started up and about 2 minutes later it showed the small box as it configured itself (3 more minutes). The problems started when it (like Microsoft) started finding devices which were already configured and working. My /etc/X11/XF86config file now is screwed up. My used to work TV/Radio now will not work any longer. Now as a user (God forbid you should be in root) "smix" fails (likely permissions). It even asked if I would like to configure a IDE HD (which has Linux software on it which SuSE already settup). Also, if I download almost any program the compiler seems to complain and then crashes. So I can't even fix xawtv which seems to default to Pal mode. KDE service releases via YOU?

Can someone please confirm I am entering the site and path appropriately within the "Change source of Installation" module of YaST? Select: Add ftp server Server Name: ftp.suse.com Directory on Server: /pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_8.2/yast-source Authentication: Anonymous selected User name and password greyed out I still seem to be receiving the ERROR (InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media) each time I try to add a site to the software source table. Not joy with the mirrors either. Am I just unlucky with the loading on these sites or what? I can connect via the browser and establish an ftp session directly to these servers so they seem to be listening. Any comments? Kirb --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. In addition, the LSB will help coordinate efforts to recruit software vendors to port and write products for Linux. There will still be variations between the different distributions. Further, as Anders explained depending upon the status of the release (beta or stable), the vendors (and developers) may put a program in different places at different times. Further, on my machine I have two different version of Mozilla: 1.2.1 which I use for my email and web browsing, and Mozilla 1.0 which I use with some of my "old" Gnome programs. The advantage of Linux (even given FSH/LSB/posix) is "i am in charge" of my box and the tools are available. If i don't like where something is I can move it, or create a copy and have it in two places at once. The reason for some of the changes in 8.1 and 8.2 (from 7.3 and 8.0) are related to becoming and remaining LSB compliant. Some of the reasons SuSE decided to stop supporting 7.0. and 7.1 were not just security issues, but LSB issues. It would have taken a lot to get those distros LSB certified. SuSE had to modify both the kernel and aaa_base on 8.0 from what had been issued in March of 2002. SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional with (August) aaa_base and a Kernel Update was declared compliant August 9th, 2002. If IIRC, the FHS formed part of the basis of the LSB; another leg is the IEEE POSIX standards <http://standards.ieee.org/regauth/posix/>. In addition to SuSE, Redhat and Mandrake are also committed to LSB compliance, as are other Linux distros. However. as I indicated above, the standards are still evolving following the IETF motto "rough consensus and running code." A new draft FHS is set to come out July 15 2003. LSB is likewise working on a new standard. And we know SuSE is committed to a new distro next fall or so. You didn't say what version of SuSE you are running, but which ever one it is you will have different problems depending on what applications and libraries you are running. As a result, although SuSE is compliant with the LSB, your problem of having a difficult time upgrading various software programs (dependency issues and such) from the software maker and must wait for a SuSE RPM to come out before guaranteeing success is a real one. However, I am sure you are aware of steps you can take to minimize it (running checksig, checking dependencies, and using programs like fou4s or apt-get, or making your own rpms). The Linux Documentation Project (TLDP) provided a nice write up by Binh Nguyen discussing the philosophy behind the FSH. It is a little dated but well worth reading. http://www.tldp.org/LDP/fhs/fhs6.pdf Further, as discussed on this list and elsewhere, many of the the "SuSE application" programs are not part of the official KDE distribution. SuSE warns: "Please be aware that most of the programs are still under development and may contain bugs. Expect dependency problems. That is the fun of being at the cutting edge, but the tools are there and others are willing to give suggestions. YOU failure

Yast online update fails with the following message: quickstarting online_update /sbin/yast2: line 149: 23848 Aborted /usr/lib/YaST2/bin/y2base $module "$@" qt -geometry "$Y2_GEOMETRY" -style="$Y2_STYLE" -fn $Y2_XFONT This seems to have been broken since I tried an online update and received a series of error messages indicating problems with either the files being downloaded or with the site. I assumed some file on my computer has been corrupted. I tried re-installing all YaST2 files from the disk (8.0) to see if I could at least get back to go, but no go. Now I am not sure what else to try. Whatever is causing this also prevents a patch-update. If I do a simple software install from disk and allow SuSEConfig to run everything looks ok. If I run SuSEConfig by hand it gives a series of errors at the config susewm step, saying there is no name defined for wmaker. This is all beyond me. Any help, anyone? Richard

Canon printer recomendation? (8.2)

Hi all: Anybody have any particular recommendations for a good quality, SuSE 8.2-complient printer? I'm looking at a good deal on a Canon S330 Color Bubblejet, and want to get a feel for what folks think first, before diving into the SuSE Hardware Database. Tks. //TB

specifying fonts

Can someone point me to a document describing the "new" way to specify fonts that are anti-aliased? I realize I don't know enough to ask the question right! For example in my .gtkrc there are statements like "font=tahoma 18". In the same spirit is there a replacement for or an analogue of xlsfonts that will show me these? Thanks, Henry Harpending

fetchmail with dial-up

Hi all, My plan is to use spamassassin to get rid of the 10 or so junkmails I get per day. I have six different pop accounts, for personal, business, and various different mail lists, all being checked by evolution. I got fetchmail so far to download messages and deliver to my /var/mail/*user* and have evolution pick it up there. This wasn't easy though. I first tried (as normal user) to just: # fetchmail but was told to specifiy a server/mailbox. I then did: # fetchmail -f /etc/fetchmailrc and was told I'm not allowed to read the file. I then copied the /etc/fetchmailrc file to my home dir and chown-ed it to my user. Then did: # fetchmail -f ~/fetchmailrc This worked. Adding a "-d 60 -N" and leaving it in a console in the background made sure I'm getting anything that comes in while I'm online. I read in /usr/share/doc/packages/fetchmail/README.SuSE how to set fetchmail up as a service. When I did all that and do: $ /etc/init.d/fetcmail start I get: /etc/init.d/fetchmail: line 20: /etc/rc.config: No such file or directory I searched, and sure enough, there is no such file on my hard drive (SuSE 8.2). I commented the relevant line out of the /etc/init.d/fetchmail script, and now it starts without moaning. Is this good, though? Removing that line? What is it supposed to do? Some more questions: Also, is it better/safer to run fetchmail as user, seeing as this is a single user computer? If so, is it possible to run fetchmail as a service, but as a user at startup, so I don't have to invoke it by hand every time I want to check mail? I'm not sure how fetcmail does this, but all the mail clients I've used, download a list of all the mail on the pop server, then download them all, then delete them all from the server. With a not too stable dial-up connection, and sometimes a couple of hundred messages at a time, I'd like it to go: download message 1 delete message download message 2 delete message 2 ect... Is this possible? Last question: If I have fetchmail running as a service, as user, all is working well, and it is checking mail every now and then, is there a way to see it's progress when it's downloading a large number at a time? A gui tool of some sorts that keeps and eye on fetchmail and reports what it's doing? Thanks H

i have /var in in its own partition if i remove the partition and reboot will var be in / ? or should i untar var into / before rebooting does it mater in what mode i am
