Hello all, What is martian source? I have created a simple firewall like below: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp ! --syn -m state --state NEW -j LOG --log-prefix "Stealth Scan" iptables -A INPUT -p tcp ! --syn -m state --state NEW -j DROP I have my LAN subnet, 1st ISP subnet and 2nd ISP subnet and I configure the routing table in order to let the different subnets can communicate with each other. Is it affect with my routing or not if I configure my firewall like this? $ nmap -sU -p 110 myservername Starting nmap V. 2.54BETA22 ( www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) Port State Service 110/udp filtered pop-3 Nmap run completed -- 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1 second How can I configure my firewall to display like the result above ( nmap -sU -p 110 myservername)? I created a test kit for PUT and DELETE methods. It works fine on Apache1.3/RedHat7.1. However I kept getting the following error on Apache1.3/SuSe8.0: 403 Forbidden Forbidden You don't have permission to access /hello.html on this server. I have installed mod_put and enabled PUT and DELETE on both Apache and SuSe, as well as changed permission on the document directory. Following are sinple test cases to reproduce the problem: telnet localhost 80 PUT /hello.html telnet localhost 80 DELETE /hello.html I will appreciate your inputs and comments on this. networking - building a home network - partitioning on a "house" server!

Hi fellow listers! I'm starting on a little project; my home network! I have put together a server from newly bought parts and some old parts I had. (Athlon based PC). For now I have a 80 GB Harddisk, but plan to add a 120 GB disk later this summer. Cables (cat5) and switch. What I want to achieve is this: I want to store a lot of data (some text, some GIS data (GRASS and ArcView shapefiles), some video, some pictures (jpg/tiff)) on this server. Then I want to have Postgres running for my database's. This I want to have access to from my two other PC's (a Athlon 2000+ workstation and a HP OniBook XE3 laptop). Both these are dual boot XP(home and pro) and Suse 8.1 Linux. Both will connect to the server through a 3com office connect 8 port switch. Later I will add an wireless access point so that I will connect through WiFi (811.b) from the laptop. Printer(s) (will by a cheap laserprinter later this summer) will be connected to the server so that I can print from all PC's. But; how to partition the servers HD(s), and configure this so that whatever OS I have booted on the two other PC's I still have access to my data and databases on the server? (Samba, NIS, NFS, LVM??) This must be said; I'm a total newbie when it comes to actualy set up a network; but have some experience from using Windows (and UNIX) on networks, as a user/poweruser, and about 4 years exp. as a Linux (SuSe) user. So far I have studied "How to set up a Linux network" from About Debian site, + the suse books from 8.1 pro. Besides I have Mat Welsh et.al "Running Linux" 4th ed. But I need some advice on what to choose, and then on how to implement it. If this turns out to be something of general interest I will write about it (somewhere -> WWW?) I think I will not use DHCP, but fixed IP adresses. I will also want to connect to the internet through a modem conected to the server. And set this up with a firewall and on demand connect/shutdown. This I think I can achieve without to much questions on the list. Well, that's what I had surmised, but no joy with the installation right out of the box. I'm not much of a tinkerer when it comes to recompiling the OS, but I've got alot left to learn. Windows 2000 Pro sees the modem fine, so I know the device is working fine. I use the modem lots, so this is a major deal for me to get thru before I can begin a stepped migration to Linux. The next major thing for me is to find out how to use VMWare for my Windows apps that the company is forcing down my throat. You might enjoy reading http://www.ijde.org/docs/02_fall_art4.pdf Anyway I don't have the answer to you question, but with a 128-bit key, your sooner or later is a long way away. We do some computer forensics and may have to break some keys in the future so I pay a little attention to the problem. There is a program that runs on a 100 machine cluster that will break a 40-bit key in a few days. Using the same program / computers to break a 128-bit key, it will take longer than the Sun's lifetime to break it. Speed increases of 10^9, 10^12, or even 10^15 are needed and those are not close. Maybe something like the Seti program that can steal cycles from millions of computers could conceivably help. So if machines get 1000 times faster in the next x years, and a seti like background program allows billions of computers to work in parallel, then 128-bit keys may be breakable, but then the bad-guys just move to more bits. Brute-force decrypting is definitely a losing battle.

Streaming media question

So... a holiday Monday finds me with some idle time. I started playing about with my SuSE8.2 install, and discovered that I can play streaming media with MPlayer 0.90 (compiled version not the SuSEified one). I just never thought to try it before because I use Crossover Plugin and WMP6.4. If I know the URL of the media stream (internet radio for example) I can copy it into the Load URL window of MPlayer and it works fine. But.... if a website uses javascript to control their site, and embeds the mms link in the script, is there any way to redirect that to MPlayer? This isn't something as simple as file associations in Konqueror... C.
